THANKS AND CONGRATULATIONS

by Allen Wrenn, Western Region Director

Many of our MBcA members work toward increasing our club’s membership by various means. Some place door hangers on Mercedes-Benz autos they see in various parking lots. Some speak to their personal friends about the club. Some pass out membership applications to fellow Mercedes-Benz owners. Some work to maintain a supply of membership applications at MB dealers and independent shops. Still others have their own ways of developing new members. All of these ideas are great.

The National Club has experienced a significant change in membership numbers in the past several years. In 2000 we had almost 30,000 members. By 2009 our membership was down to just above the 19,000 mark. Since then we have had a steadily increasing trend. At the end of 2012 club membership was 20,088. If both Members and Associates are counted, our numbers added to 27,965.

So, this membership thing is something we should all be working on in order to maintain and grow the size of the club. Remember, more members means more fun.

I extend my personal thanks to all of you who have recruited new members in the past. And, I also extend congratulations to Laura Simonds. on a national basis she was the second-biggest recruiter of new members in 2012.

Something to keep in mind is the personal incentive you have for recruiting new members. for each member you are responsible for signing up your membership is extended for an additional month.

BOARD DETERMINES GOALS FOR 2013

By Gloria Loventhal, President

The new board of the San Francisco Bay Area chapter of the Mercedes-Benz Club of America held their first meeting of the year on January 27 and determined the following areas of focus for this year.

Marketing/Social Media • Increase the membership and participation of the MBcA SfBA

section by raising awareness and visibility of the club and its benefits.

• By the end of this year, we will have 900 likes on our facebook page.

Partnerships• collaborate with MBuSA which will result in our section

piggybacking on their social media/marketing plans. • continue to partner with other car clubs and sections • Promote and support Regional/National events

Leadership• Recruit two new Board members to begin to serve in 2014• Implement a Board mentoring program to ensure success of our

Board Leaders

Deciding how to accomplish these goals including specific action steps will be the emphasis of our April 21st Board Meeting. Board Meetings are open to members with a simple RSvP to our marvelous secretary, Mauna Wagner.

There is much energy and enthusiasm for this coming year from our Board members, both new and veteran. We are listening. Please feel free to email or phone any of us with your comments, compliments and/or suggestions.

What a perfect start to this month’s fSD! The morning fog cleared to lead the way to a crisp and bright sunny morning! Twenty-six (26) MB’s of varying models and years, including a Smart car, met around an ‘ol oak tree in Los Altos, along with their owners and accompanying family/friends.

We left promptly at 10 am, working our way to foothill college, and beyond, through the back roads and hills of Santa clara county up along the mountain ridges, and on through to San Mateo county’s scenic coastline. As promised, this drive had it all--from forests, to wide open spaces, to the ocean, and airplanes. Yes, airplanes. You see, we ended our drive at the 3-Zero café at Half Moon Bay’s community airport, where we were entertained by a stunt plane practicing his maneuvers/tricks. See what kind of things you missed by not attending february’s first Sunday Drive!

feeling left out? But don’t you fret –our drive on March 3 will be just as awesome. The route will take us to the East Bay where we will be taking in the beauty Mt. Diablo’s spectacular vistas--so come and join in on the fun. I hope to see you then. In the meantime, drive safe and remember you can always contact me at [email protected] for more information.

Wear comfortable clothing (layer in case of cold weather) and bring your camera to capture the brilliant canvas of color alive everywhere on this beautiful country estate. This is one of those club events which provide opportunities for additional camaraderie with a splash of education on life for wealthy Peninsula residents in the early 1900s (parallels Downton Abbey life if you watch that PBS series). for more information on filoli, view their web site at http://www.filoli.org.

Plan on arriving at 9:45 am to check in, view the 10-minute file or visit the cafe for a coffee.

We will gather for our docent lead tour at 10:15 am just outside the visitors center. The complete house and garden tour lasts about two and one half hours. This event will sell out so make your reservations now! Tickets are just $5.00 as MB Garage, Inc. is sponsoring our event.

Directions to Filoli

filoli is located about 30 miles south of San francisco in Woodside, california, just south of the junction of Highways 92 and 280. The address is 86 cañada Road, Woodside, california 94062. Take the Edgewood Road exit, turn right on cañada Road, go 1.25 miles. Turn left into filoli’s north entrance, proceed to guardhouse.

Please register online at http://sections.mbca.org/sfba/section_calendar.htm. Registration deadline is March 20.

one o f t he ma in bene f i t s o f be ing a Member o f a c lub is the access you have to spec ia l events . our club is no different. These are amazing events and are organized by our dedicated volunteers. occasionally, we run into some hiccups in the process. Most of the time we are able to sort things out and you, the member, are never the wiser. Recently, we had contacted the John Mozart Foundation Auto Museum to ask if we could come for a tour. They are not open to the public and access has to be granted. We did secure access, but we did not secure the date--we only knew it would be in february. This was a very unusual situation. Normally, we wouldn’t have announced this event until we were certain of the date and time. As our newsletter deadline is 3 weeks before the beginning of each month, we did not have a date secured at the time we went to press. We asked that you check the website for the announcement of when the tour date would be. Many of our members did so and were able to register when the date was released.

Some of you tried to call me, the organizer, to secure a spot. unfortunately, I could only secure a spot when I had your registration in hand. In the meantime, many o f you reg is te red on l ine and f i l l ed a l l the spo ts .

In the future, sign up early and online to make sure a spot is secured. We had a record number of members interested in the Mozart tour. Please accept our apologies for any inconvenience caused.
