Letters to the Editors
The fallowing is a letter by AABTS member Cathy Antonakos, a condensed copy of which was printed in the '½nn Arbor News.'' She also sent it to Ann Arbor Mayor Ingrid Sheldon, the Ann Arbor City Council, and the Ann Arbor Department of Public Services.
Like a door-to-door salesman, the road widening project on Fuller/Glazier has its toe-hold on the Ann Arbor community. With each widening of this or that little segment of the corridor between Huron Parkway and University Hospitals, we hasten the day when a five-lane roadway connects US-23 and the University of Michigan's central campus.
If not for the intrusion by some valued oak trees, construction would begin immediately on a five-lane stretch of roadway north of the Veterans Administration Medical Center to replace the twolane road between Bonisteel and Beal.
In the year 2010, traffic volume along Fuller Road between US-23 and UM hospitals is projected to be so great that we must stomach a five-lane road to keep functioning nor1nally. (Surely, commuting residents of Ypsilanti and Brighton are now cheering.)
Traffic engineers don't tell the public that: projected increases in traffic are based on peak-hour travel (widened roads are underutilized most of the day); transportation models used today were developed in the 1950s and

1960s to design freeways; and wider roads increase travel by merely existing-they create new opportunities for travel.
Consider that four traffic lights are planned for a 1-mile stretch of the road in the vicinity of the VA Medical Center. No wonder five lanes are needed-to accommodate the halted traffic! A good traffic engineer will eliminate the needless intersections ' restore two-way traffic on Fuller and Glazier, drop Oakway entirely, and still keep traffic flowing smoothly!
What sort of roadway would be designed for the Fuller corridor if a traffic engineer took into account natural features ' community values, and the potential for bicycle and pedestrian travel? A two-lane road would not disrupt the aesthetic quality of the area, and cyclists and pedestrians would not be further discouraged from biking or walking between North and Central campuses. Better yet, with a few modifications of the corridor, bicycle and pedestrian traffic would increase, reducing motorized travel. Many people in Ann Arbor who commute to North Campus would like to avoid parking fees and bike or walk if conditions were right for doing so.
Rather than spending community resources to open wide the door to increased traffic volume, we should accept a little congestion on Fuller and Glazier at rush hour, to increase the pressure for our community to search for alternatives-such as

Time Trial Summary by Lucian & Mary Chaney
The 1993 Time Trial series was completed July 28 with no mishaps and no cancellations. The series was scheduled three times, on the last Wednesdays of May, June, and July.
This schedule was an experiment to see how participation might compare with the 1992 season when the trials were scheduled every 2 weeks, 9 times during the season. We are happy to report that this was a success. The total number of participants increased from 27 to 34. Four members participated three times, and an additional eight participated twice. It is encouraging to see a few members use the Time Trial as a technique for monitoring their physical condition during the season. The best times for all participating members are listed below.
Conducting a time trial requires at last three persons: a timer, a starter, and a turn monitor. We require a turn monitor for both the convenience and safety of the riders. We wish to thank our monitors, Jack Caldwell and Jim Spencer. In addition, we would like to thank all the regular participants for making this a successful season.

Safety Lucian Chaney
SATURDAY BREAKFAST RIDE
There is an old saying that safety should begin at home, and for the AABTS, home is Saturday morning on Huron River Drive. For starters, the ride supervisor tries to remind everyone to ride no more than two abreast and at the call ''car back'' to form a single line. Everyone is cautioned to make perpendicular crossings of all railroad tracks and to obey the ''rules of the road," which include stopping at all stop signs and never passing another bicyclist on the right. But we don't all listen.
There are three railroad crossings between Ann Arbor and Dexter, and you should always try to cross perpendicular to the tracks. This greatly reduces your chances of falling. You should remember that in the early morning it is possible that the road may be dry, but the tracks may be wet with dew. The most dangerous track to cross is about 200 yards west of Wagner Road, where particular caution should always be observed because this track has no rubber safety pads.
The large turnout for the Saturday Morning Breakfast Ride makes this ride more like an invitational than a club ride. As the number of bicycles increase, the chances of bicycle-bicycle accidents increase.
At the beginning of the ride when the road is crowded with bicycles, do not ride too fast and do not form pace lines until you can get down to groups of six bikers or less. A caution which is observed at most invitational rides is to call ''on your left'' if you are about to overtake another rider. This is a signal to the rider being overtaken to move as far to the right as possible so that the overtaking rider is not required to move into the oncoming traffic lane.
If we can all observe these few precau-
·5 ......... ..

tions, the entire Saturday ride should arrive in Dexter with no falls or accidents.
VISIBILITY
The fall biking season is a time to enjoy the fall colors, ride to one of our local cider mills, or just enjoy one of those wonderful bright crisp days. However, it is also a time to be alert to reduced biker visibility.
Biker visibility is a major concern for all of us as we move into the fall season. The reasons for the concern are as follows:
(1) The days are getting shorter, and the transition from daylight to dark occurs at a faster rate than it did during the sum.mer. Remember that twilight is the time of poorest visibility. Plan ahead and don't get caught without adequate lights either for your bike or your person.
(2) The average daily temperature will be falling, which will require heavier outer garments. Those brightly colored lycra garments that made you look so neat during the sum.mer also increased your visibility. If you cover them with a dark jacket and black tights, your visibility will plum.met. If you plan to purchase new outer clothing, look for bright colors. If not, a reflective vest similar to those used by construction workers would be a good addition.
Enjoy the fall rides, but be sure to maintain your visibility.
