1. All about Indonesia
1.1. The location of Indonesia
The Republic of Indonesia is the largest archipelago in the world comprising 17,504
large and small tropical islands fringed with white sandy beaches, many still
uninhabited and a number even still unnamed. Straddling the equator, situated
between the continents of Asia and Australia and between the Pacific and the Indian
Oceans, it is as wide as the United States from San Francisco to New York, equaling
the distance between London and Moscow. Indonesia has a total population of
> (more than) 215 million people from more than 200 ethnic groups. The national
language is Bahasa Indonesia.
Among the most well known islands are
Sumatra, Java, Bali, Kalimantan (formerly Borneo), Sulawesi (formerly Celebes), the
Maluku Islands (or better known as Moluccas, the original Spice Islands) and Papua.
Then, there is Bali the worlds best island resort with its enchanting culture,
beaches, dynamic dances and music. But Indonesia still has many unexplored

islands with grand mountain views, green rainforests to trek through, rolling waves to
surf and deep blue pristine seas to dive in where one can swim with dugongs,
dolphins and large mantarays.
1.2.The reason why Indonesia is famous for its culture
Because of her location, and geology, Indonesia is blessed with the most
diverse landscape, from fertile ricelands on Java and Bali to the luxuriant rainforests
of Sumatra, Kalimantan and Sulawesi, to the savannah grasslands of the
Nusatenggara islands to snow-capped peaks of West Papua.
Her wildlife ranges from the prehistoric giant Komodo lizard to the Orang Utan
and the Java rhino, to the Sulawesi anoa dwarf buffalos, to birds with exquisite
plumage like the cockatoo and the bird of paradise. This is also the habitat of the
Rafflesia the worlds largest flower, wild orchids, an amazing variety of spices, and
aromatic hardwood and a large variety of fruit trees. Underwater, scientists havefound in North Sulawesi the prehistoric coelacanth fish, a living fossil fish, predating
the dinosaurs living some 400 million years ago, while whales migrate yearly through
these waters from the South Pole. Here are hundreds of species of colourful coral
and tropical fish to admire.
Culturally, Indonesia fascinates with
her rich diversity of ancient temples, music, ranging from the traditional to modern
pop, dances, rituals and ways of life, changing from island to island, from region to

region. Yet everywhere the visitor feels welcomed with that warm, gracious innate
friendliness of the Indonesian people that is not easily forgotten.
Facilities-wise Indonesias hotels are second to none. In fact, many of our
luxurious and unique hotels have constantly been listed as some of the best in the
world, located on white sandy beaches, overlooking green river valleys, or situated inthe heart of busy capital Jakarta. While Indonesias cities like Jakarta, Bandung,
Surabaya, or Makassar are a hive of activities for business and leisure and a
paradise for shoppers, offering upscale boutiques selling top brand names, to local
goods at road-side stalls. Here gourmets can treat themselves to the many regions
delectable spicy cuisine or dine sumptuously at international restaurants. And for
sheer relaxation, Indonesia Spas are second to none to reinvigorate both body and
mind.
Convention centers are equipped with state-of-the-art facilities, as many top
international conferences and exhibitions are heldin Jakarta, Bali to Manado, ranging from the Global
Climate Change Conference in Bali to the World
Ocean Conference in Manado , to trade and
investment exhibitions and tourism trade shows in
many provincial capital cities.
Jakarta, Bali, Medan, Padang, Bandung, Solo,
Yogyakarta, Surabaya, Makassar are connected by
direct international flights, and many regular and
low cost carriers fly passengers to Indonesias
towns or remote locations.

2. Tourism in Indonesia
Tourism in Indonesia is an important component of the Indonesian economy as
well as a significant source of its foreign exchange revenues. The vast country of
sprawling archipelago has so much to offer; from natural beauty, historical heritage to
cultural diversity
In 2009, the number of international tourists arriving in Indonesia climbed 3.6% to
6.45 million arrivals from 6.43 million in 2008. The subsequent economical impact of this
tourist influx in 2009 saw $6.3 billion US dollars spent by international tourists in
Indonesia, at an average spend of US$129.57 per day and US$995.93 per visit. Whilst
the number of arrivals increased in 2009 the total spent per visitor decreased leading to
a revenues shortfall of US$1.07 billion when compared to the previous year.

3. Tourism Attraction
3.1.Dive sites
With more than 17,508 islands, Indonesia presents ample diving opportunities. With
20% of the world's coral reefs, over 3,000 different species of fish and 600 coral
species, deep water trenches, volcanic sea mounts, World War II wrecks, and an
endless variety of macro life, scuba diving in Indonesia is both excellent and
inexpensive. Bunaken National Marine Park, at the northern tip of Sulawesi, claims to
have seven times more genera of coral than Hawaii, and has more than 70% of all the
known fish species of the Indo-Western Pacific.
According to Conservation International, marine surveys suggest that the marine life
diversity in the Raja Ampat area is the highest recorded on Earth. Moreover, there are
over 3,500 species living in Indonesian waters, including sharks, dolphins, manta rays
and turtles.

3.2.Surf Breaks
Surfing is also a popular water activity in Indonesia and the sites are recognised as
world class. The well-known spots are mostly located on the southern, Indian
Ocean side of Indonesia, for example, the large oceanic surf breaks on southern Java.
However, the north coast does not receive the same surf from the Java Sea.
Surf breaks can be found all the way along Sumatra, down to Nusa Tenggara,
including Aceh, Bali, Banten, Java, Lombok, the Mentawai Islands, and Sumbawa.
Although Indonesia has many world-class surfing spots, the majority of surfers are
came from abroad, especially Australia and United States. However, the seed of local

3.4.Cultural tourism
Indonesia consists of an entire 300 ethnic groups, spread over a 1.8 million km area
of 6,000 inhabited islands. This creates a cultural diversity, further compounded
by Hindu, Buddhist, Islamic and European colonialist influences. In Bali, where most of
Indonesian Hindus live, cultural and religious festivals with Balinese dance-drama
performances in Balinese temples are major attractions to foreign tourists.
Despite foreign influences, a diverse array of indigenous traditional cultures is still
evident in Indonesia. The indigenous ethnic group of Toraja in South Sulawesi, whichstill has strong animistic beliefs, offers a unique cultural tradition, especially during
funeral rituals. The Minangkabau ethic group retain a unique matrilineal culture, despite
being devoted Muslims.
Other indigenous ethnic groups include the Asmat and Dani in Papua,
the Dayak in Kalimantanand the Mentawai in Sumatra, where traditional rituals are stillobserved. A discussion of cultural tourism is not complete without a mention

Tourism in Ndonesia

1. Indonesia is the biggest archipelagic nation in the world. It has more than 17,000
islands. If you love nature then this is the place for you. It has lush forests
teaming with wildlife, lofty mountains and magnificent white-sand beaches. This
tropical paradise has been a favorite tourist spot for many foreigners and locals
alike. Its the perfect place for backpackers.
2. This country provides you good value for your money. $1 is around RP 9200.
You can easily become a millionaire in Indonesia with this exchange rate. You
can go on a shopping spree, splurge on 5-star hotels and live like a king or
queenhere. Usually when I travel I dont buy stuff. Instead I use up my money
for food and travel. But when I travelled to Indonesia I had so much extra moneythat I couldnt resist the temptation to go shopping. As a result I accumulated so
much extra baggage.
3. People in Indonesia are known to be extremely friendly and accommodating.
One reason why my family and I chose to vacation in Indonesia last year was
because a friend of mine who had previously gone there told us it was very safe
for tourists. Plus the people were very friendly so you can count on them to help
you out when you get lost or suggest tourist spots that you can visit.
4. Indonesia is a great place to shop in. If you love shopping then this is the place to
be. I had a particularly good time shopping in Bali Island. There were a lot of
bazaars and stalls that sold cheap and good quality products. You can find a lotof nice stuff you can bring at home to give your friends. There are also different
art work pieces that you can take home.
