deAr fellow Tourism oPerATors:tourism on Pei represents 7% of our gross domestic product, as well as 7500 full time employee positions. tiaPei, along with many industry stakeholders, recognizes the importance of our industry, the need to take a serious look at where we are, and what is work-ing well and what is not. From there, we need to change in order to move forward to build a more profitable and sustainable Tourism industry.

early indicators for 2013, for example hotels being down by more than 5000 room nights in the first few months of the year, suggest that 2013 will continue to be a struggle for tourism. there are many possible contributing factors to these decreasing numbers, such as tough economic times, winter storm cancellations, government cutbacks, ei, job uncertainty, and the lack of marketing and spon-sorship dollars for events like Jack Frost. we need to turn this negative trend around and become the masters of our own destiny in tourism.

tiaPei has heard you loud and clear that we need change; that we need to take control of our destiny and become fully engaged in the future direction of tourism on Pei. your feedback from the province wide accommodation levy consulta-tions, as well as your ideas and solutions from our stakeholder ses-sion at our semi-annual meeting, provided the basis for the tourism Forum held on march 13th & 14th, 2013. this forum was well attended

by engaged tourism stakeholders who discussed priority issues facing our tourism industry today, and identified ways to address these priority issues over the next three years, in order to “seize our Poten-tial” in Tourism. The final report from this session is complete and has been distributed to all attend-ees and stakeholders, and will be available very soon on the tiaPei website. additionally, the sub-com-mittee chairs and members will be identified, along with their contact information. i urge all tourism op-erators to send in their comments, observations and suggestions to the committees. this will ensure they have as much information and feedback from industry as possible, as they carry out the priority actions that have been identified.

the initial task Force led by tiaPei, to organize the session at the semi-annual meeting as well as the forum, will remain in place to lead the strat-egy to “seize our Potential” in tourism and is aug-mented by the sub-committee chairs. From the actions identi-fied, attendees and stakeholders from the forum identified the areas of interest to which they felt they could contribute, and ultimately move our industry forward. Four key strategies were identified, with committees struck to lead each focus as follows:

1. Prepare an economic Business case for tourism on Pei

2. develop an industry led plan for new tourism dollars

3. Prepare a three year strategy and Board structure review of tiaPei

4. review and propose leader-ship structure

these committees will participate in the planning process during the days, weeks and months ahead.

The forum also identified the need for industry to pull together to make 2014 the best possible year in tourism, by embracing the 2014 celebrations and the world host training to showcase our island in the best possible light. the need for an innovative group or commit-tee was also identified, as creative ideas, outside the box thinking, calculated risk taking and forward thinking are all necessary for build-ing success in tourism. several stakeholders expressed an interest here and will form a sub-committee in the future.

while many engaged industry stakeholders from the forum have agreed to lead and participate in the various committees to carry out the important mandate of each committee, it is important that you know we cannot accomplish this alone. we need your engagement, your ideas and your support to

accomplish the huge task that is ahead, to mobilize our industry and “seize our Potential” in tourism. you may be called upon by

the various committees for your expertise or assistance to get the job done - so please, please assist wherever you can. our volunteer base is not abundant, and as tour-ism operators and stakeholders it is your responsibility to take action to ensure the future of our industry on Pei.

the terms of reference and man-date for each of the committees has been set, and initial meet-ings of the committees are taking place. For most committees the initial reports and findings will be presented at the tiaPei annual general meeting in november. tiaPei is committed to complete transparency in the process of “seizing our Potential” in tourism, and will provide all reports as they become available to all tourism stakeholders.

the tourism human resource sector council has also been very busy planning for the future, and expects the final report for the tourism human resource strategy by the latter part of may. the tour-ism Job Fairs have taken place, and we hope they were helpful in your recruitment efforts for the busy summer season. we are very ex-cited to partner with the Pei 2014 celebrations and the world host training initiative. this program will provide a wonderful opportu-nity for operators to provide their front line employees with a fresh approach to service, and be well positioned to showcase exemplary island service and hospitality during the 2014 celebrations. the ready to work youth Program has been completed, with more than half of the participants already employed in the tourism workforce. two mature workers sessions were held in charlottetown and montague this winter, and another successful partnership between tiaPei and holland college saw the par-ticipants of the english language training gain insight into tourism on Pei and available employment opportunities. mature workers were able to take part in employ-ment mixers in charlottetown and summerside, which were open to the general public. as well, an information session for newcomers to canada held in charlottetown was very well attended.

we have set ourselves an ambi-tious set of goals and priorities, and will be working hard to mobilize our industry with fresh ideas and creative thinkers, to become the masters of our own destiny for the future in tourism. we are asking for your help to move forward – your involvement will be vital to the success of the goals we have iden-tified. I hope in the weeks ahead you will share your time, talents and ideas as we strive for a more suc-cessful and profitable Industry and a brighter future for us all.

the tourism industry association of Prince edward island (tiaPei) once again held three different tourism Job Fairs this year. the Job Fairs were held in charlottetown, cavendish and summerside.

the tourism Job Fair at holland college tourism and culinary centre hosted 26 exhibitors and saw over 900 job seekers attend. this annual event proves to be a huge suc-cess every year, continually drawing a large crowd.

this was the second year for the cavendish Job Fair, held at the cavendish destination centre, with 20 exhibitors and many quality job seekers interested in working in the caven-dish area.

the tourism industry association of Pei partnered with the east Prince youth development centre again this year to hold the summerside Job Fair at credit union Place. the Fair was open to training providers and employers in all sectors. this year over 400 people came to meet with 29 exhibitors.

all three Job Fairs provided a great opportunity for job seekers to meet with numerous employers face to face, and in one convenient location. Fernanda has been the tiaPei Financial administrator for more than a year now. She maintains the Association's financial records and provides information and reports to the stakehold-ers and industry members. Before moving to canada 13 years ago, she worked for a canadian company in her home country argentina, where she gained her accounting experience. after moving to Pei she attended holland college and worked for variety of local businesses. Fernanda is enjoying the opportu-nity to work in the Prince Edward Island hospitality field along with the exciting possibilities that this industry has to offer. she is mom to a son and 2 daughters who keep her busy with activities and in the local community.

reaching our u.S. MarkeT SegMenTS

actP is committed to stimulating visitation and increasing revenue for atlantic canada and building awareness of the vast array of unique and authentic tourism products in our region. our strategy is built on three main pillars: direct-to-consumer advertising; travel trade programs and partnerships and media relations activities.

in January 2013, actP launched an exciting direct to consumer ad-vertising campaign in the new england and the mid-atlantic states of the u.s. the program focuses on differentiating each of the four atlantic Provinces from other travel destinations and using the best media to reach our targeted potential traveler at the most appropriate time. We identified our best prospects through the use of sophisticated market segmenta-tion research which identified a variety of variables including consumption habits. actP used this information as well as u.s. travel trends and trip planning and trip motivator information to reach them.

Media conSuMPTion habiTS:

the result is a plan which utilizes a solid mix of both print and online media vehicles. online continues to dominate the travel cycle. almost 60% of consumers who took part in a mintel travel study said they will spend more time shopping online for travels products. according to the same research, a staggering 80% of online travel research converts to a paid customer. there is no denying the importance of online advertising. However, online choices continue to be influenced by offline sources such as magazines and newspapers. this is especially true in the early part of the travel inspiration and planning cycle.

the 2013 program includes a healthy blend of print titles such as aaa magazine, aarP, the Boston globe, the new york times, smithsonian and travel + leisure to inspire and online vehicles such as aol, expedia, Say Media, and Nytimes.com to further inform and influence the consumer to choose to travel to our region.

annual uk Media caMPaign incorPoraTeS exciTing new eleMenTS in 2013

during key booking months from January to may, the atlantic canada tourism Partnership invests in a consumer media campaign in the united Kingdom. the 2013 campaign consists of traditional digital and print ads in travel-focused publications and sites, as well as some compelling new tactics such as online video and speciality television ads.

For the first time in the UK, ACTP has purchased television spots on two specialty channels, the national geographic channel and the travel chan-nel. using a new atlantic canada video, 1,100 30-second spots and 480 5-second spots ran on the channels from February to april to a viewing audience complementing ACTP’s defined UK target: couples aged 35+, well-educated with a middle-to-high household income, taking over two trips per year. at the end of the advertisement, viewers are encouraged to visit the uK website, www.atlanticcanadaholiday.co.uk to book a vacation through one of actP’s travel trade partners.

in addition to paid advertis-ing, actP secured valuable television coverage in the uK in 2012 through its media relations activities, including the globe trekker eastern canada program and charley Boorman’s extreme Frontiers canada feature. Planet golf also began airing an atlantic canada feature on the travel channel in February 2013 to two million viewers per airing, as a result of a film trip in sum-mer 2012.

the uK consumer campaign provides support to tactical media relations and travel trade activities, with the objective of improving awareness of atlantic canada in the uK market, and driving visitation and revenue to the region. actP also participates in the canadian tourism commission’s annual consumer campaign in the uK, which includes magazine, newspaper and digital ads and runs from February to april 2013.

the tiaPei ready to work Program, Febru-ary 4th – June 21st, offered 12 participants the opportunity to explore career opportunities within the tourism sector. Participants spent eight weeks in the classroom learning about the essentials of customer service and became certified in Food Safe, SuperHost, First Aid/cPr, responsible Beverage server, and emerit tourism essentials. additionally, participants enjoyed presentations by several guest speakers from various tourism operations, tours of local businesses, and experienced volunteer work within the community.

after completing the classroom portion of the course, students were prepared to enter into the workforce, and were successful in finding em-ployment at hotels, restaurants, retail stores, etc.

these employers were able to take advantage of our wage subsidy program which runs for the first eight weeks of employment.

according to stacey Blackett, a participant in the program, “it was a wonder-ful learning experience that gave me the knowledge, skills and confidence to provide exceptional customer service, and a greater knowledge of the tourism industry, as well as of myself.” on more than one occasion, partici-pants have commented that friends and family have noticed a positive change in their overall outlook, and have expressed interest in attend-ing the course themselves.

throughout the duration of the course, program facilitators marlene gotell and marie Bastarache observed soaring confidence levels,

and the participants were a terrific source of sup-port and encouragement for one another. the tiaPei ready to work Program is sponsored by the canadian tourism human resource council, and is funded in part under the government of canada’s youth employment strategy.

Parks canada is getting ready for another great year at Prince edward island national Park and national historic sites and we look forward to working with our tourism industry partners to wel-come the world to Prince edward island again this year. as we prepare for the busy summer ahead we would like to share with you some of the excit-ing activities and events that are planned for the spring and summer.

Parks canada is introducing several new and exciting pro-grams to the long list of things to do in Prince edward island national Park this summer:

visitors can join park in-terpreters for a variety of discovery walks, talks and tours happening each week in July in august. along with our very popular programs such as sensational sand-castles, Beaches and dunes walk, toys & games and the greenwich dunes walk, there will be a few new programs offered this year. drop by the new discovery dome to explore some fascinating reasons why the north shore is so special through some hands on activities. this special tent will be set up at either Brackley or cavendish Beach at scheduled times. or explore the park after dark at nightwatch and learn all about those things that go goes bump in the night! the all-new camp-ground cabaret will showcase the rich cultural of the island’s north shore and to experience the park through film, storytelling or songs.

there are a number of great special events planned for this year including Pedal the Parkway in cavendish on June 15, canada day at green gables on July 1, the great island sandcastle competition at Brackley Beach on July 20, Bioblitz at cavendish grove on august 14 and Picnic in the Park—a Fall Flavours signature event at cavendish grove in september!

other fun activities for families include the Parks canada Xplorers Program and gPs adventures including geocaching at greenwich, cycloaching the north shore, and the gPs heritage Quest. the greenwich interpretation centre, featuring fascinat-ing interactive exhibits and a multi-media show, will be open from June 8 - septem-ber 16th. there are also over 50km of stunning trails avail-

able for hiking and cycling in the park.

canada’s special places are unique and authentic, offering one-of-a-kind opportunities to cana-dians and foreign visitors alike. Parks canada looks forward to welcoming our many visitors to Prince edward island national Park, green gables heritage Place and our national historic sites this summer!

tiaPei, in partnership with holland college, offered newcomers to Pei an opportunity to participate in ready to work – tourism hospitality training. classes were taught by holland college instructor Beverly Fullerton lewis, who utilized emerit tourism essentials, emerit canadian workplace es-sentials, and superhost as a part of the curriculum. the class participated in one week of job shadowing at a tourism business in late February, and during the year they visited various tourism operations throughout the Province. all of the participants have expressed an interest in working in tourism occupations. orientation is a crucial time in the hiring process, and can have long-term effects in terms of an employee’s success on the job. Failure to properly integrate an employee into a new environment can potentially foster a sense of alienation from the company’s culture, and can contribute to misunderstandings regarding the rules and regulations. in the worst case scenario, it can mean the employee may become so frustrated with the lack of support and knowledge, that he/she will seek employment elsewhere.

orientation ensures that all employees are formally introduced to their new place of work, and existing employees are made aware of the newcomer and his/her special needs. Often ensuring this small step is completed can mean relationships and loyalties to the organization are developed from the very first week, resulting in a better work environment for all.

orientation to a new job takes time. employees are socialized (learn job and culture) to the organization in different stages; there are different needs during each of these phases, and the success of the orientation depends on responding appropriately to these needs.

typically there are 3 stages of new employee socialization.

1. anTiciPaTory SocializaTion “geTTing in”this stage begins even before the new hire starts their job. they develop attitudes and expectations about the position and the workplace. success depends on how well the candidate has cor-rectly anticipated expectations, and promoted their fit with the organization in the selection interview.

2. accoMModaTion “breaking in”the new hire has started their job and attempts to become a functioning member of the organization. if there is a large gap between expectations of the job and reality of the job, they might retract and quit. the goal of the employer is to keep expectations and reality equal. sometimes there is a reality shock, but the em-ployee can get through this. they must replace assumptions and perceptions with the organization’s norms and values. there are 4 processes to help enable new employees to progress through this crucial stage:

a) mastering the job and becoming productiveb) Becoming part of social groupsc) Defining their position’s role in relation to the organizationd) receiving timely and consistent feedback – “Knowing where i stand”

3. role ManageMenT “SeTTling in”new hires must come to grips with, cope and resolve any problems encountered during the accommodation stage. they must resolve discrepancies between high productivity to impress their supervisor and breaking the group norms. it is also possible and should be looked at more closely, where an organization may also change to meet the expectations of the employee, to take advantage of the employee’s strengths and openness about ineffective methods.

There are 3 basic responses to socialization:1. rebellion – rejection of all behaviours, values and norms2. conformity – acceptance of all behaviours, values, norms3. creativity – the acceptance of essential behaviours, value and

norms and rejection of others.

tourism operators must take initiative to create conditions for suc-cessful organization socialization. why? cost of turnover, training, geographic orientation and loss productivity, just to name a few. let’s face it, without formal orientation a new employee may fall victim to negative informal orientation – we all know that person you might end up working with who doesn’t like their job or the company and is quite vocal about it. don’t let those people sabo-tage a new employee’s view of the company, have an orientation program in place!

over 150 mature workers attended the employment mixers, hosted by the tourism human resource sector council (thrsc), an arm of the tourism industry association of Pei (tiaPei), tuesday, march 19th (charlottetown) and thursday, march 21st (summer-side). “Having a specific job fair geared towards Mature Workers is important to the industry as it allows the employer and prospective employees time to network, submit resumes, fill in job applications and, in general, discuss the tourism industry and what it has to of-fer” says don cudmore, executive director of tiaPei. “this event provides a great opportunity for mature workers seeking employ-ment to meet and speak directly with employers in a relaxed, non-intimidating, informal atmosphere.”

this is the 6th year the thrsc has hosted an employment mixer geared towards mature workers, this year over a dozen employ-

ers represented their organizations and were actively engaged in recruiting the mature worker.

the thrsc provides leadership in the development of the tourism industry's workforce and human resource development needs. it also provides a neutral forum for industry representatives and stake-holders to discuss and propose solutions to hr related challenges and concerns within tourism.

the 2014 150th anniversary celebrations of the famous meeting of the Fathers of confederation promise to be a year-long and province-wide tribute. the meeting held in charlottetown, Prince edward island in sep-tember 1864, laid the foundation for the creation of canada in 1867.

the tourism industry association of Prince edward island recognizes the importance of the 150th anniversary of the meeting of the Fathers of confederation and plans to promote its importance through “welcome to 2014”, a presentation highlighting the historic, cultural and year-long events celebrating the significance of the famous meeting.

tourism operators, organizations and associations will feel the impact of tourists coming to the island to commemorate this anniversary. the importance of 2014 and the year-long celebrations can be communicated to members of the island’s tourism industry through these presentations. tourism operators will be able to offer their visitors a “welcome to 2014” message, celebrating through year-long events the historical and cultural significance of the Sesquicentennial.

On May 10th, Village Pottery in New London will open its doors for the 40th season. PEI's longest running pottery shop was founded by Daphne Large in 1973. Soon after she graduated from NSCAD in Halifax, Daphne's mother spotted a vacant building on the corner of Route 6 next to LM Montgomery's birthplace. In 1995, Daphne and her husband Ian decided to move the building 1 km down the road, where they would have more land and parking space. A full studio was built on the foundation, and as well Potter's House (a seasonal tourist home) was acquired. Fast forward to 2013, and the business continues to grow. Daphne and Ian's daughter Suzanne has become a full-time potter and manages Village Pottery's social media and e-Commerce. In 2012 Village Pottery was awarded the Tourism Technology Award at the TIAPEI Awards Gala. This was a highlight for the family owned and operated business, which has developed from a seasonal shop to year-round with online shopping. Village Pottery features the work of over 10 Island Potters as well as painters, jewelers, weavers and more. the tourism industry association of Pei sponsors a tourist accommodation improvement competition. Prizes are 1st $300, 2nd $200, and 3rd $100, and are awarded on a provincial basis. the 1st place winner will be present-ed with the “most improved tourist industry accommodations” award for the year 2013. deadline for entries is may 17th, 2013.

the tourist accommodations improvement competition is open to any op-erator of tourist accommodations in the Province, (hotels, motels, cottages and B&B’s).

the competition is based on the improvements made to the operation to make it more attractive to tourists and the public.

Criteria for judging are based on the following;• repairs to and improvements of building(s)• Painting of buildings• Improvement to parking, identification, signage, lighting• Planting /preservation of existing trees, shrubs, etc.• lawn construction and maintenance• Flowers, both annual and perennial, display, maintenance, care• Fencing, either decorative or privacy• litter free highway frontage, grass trimmed• general appearance of property• Flag flying

it is very important to compile a list of improvements you are undertaking, and equally as important to take photos of your property before you begin your work.
