I am pleased to welcome you to a new season of athletics and recreation at Thompson Rivers University. We are very proud of our facilities, varsity and club athletes and all of our coaches. This year TRU will host the Canadian College Athletic Association golf championships in October and the Canadian College Baseball Conference’s final tournament in May.

Over 260 student athletes and coaches will represent Thompson Rivers University in 12 sports this season. Our men’s and women’s volleyball and basketball teams compete at the top echelon of university sports: Canadian Interuniversity Sport (CIS). We also have four teams in the BC College Athletic Association: Men’s and women’s soccer, badminton and men’s golf. A fifth – cross country running – will join this fall.

TRU student athletes receive a first class education at TRU, and learn from quality coaches, but they also are also encouraged to engage with their community and to be role models. The volunteer efforts of athletes and teams in Terry Fox Runs in elementary schools, charity soccer clinics, Wendy’s Dream Lift and Raise a Reader earned them the Canadian College Athletics Association Community Service Award in 2009.

Adding to their athletic accomplishments and community involvement, many of our student athletes are receiving national attention for balancing their academic and athletic careers. Twenty-five varsity athletes were named either Canadian College Athletic Association or Canadian College Athletic Sport-Scholar Athletes by achieving a minimum GPA of 3.50.

But TRU’s Athletics and Recreation programming isn’t just for the elite student athlete. Our campus offers a number of recreation programs for students at all levels of athletic ability for those who just want to meet new friends and have fun. More than 500 students take part in TRU’s weekly intramural floor hockey, badminton, volleyball and basketball games each week.

There is a way that everyone, whether from the campus or the broader community, can participate in athletics and recreation at TRU. Our game schedules and results are posted on our website and I invite you to attend as many games as possible and enjoy and contribute to campus life.

Join me at the game, let’s howl for the ‘Pack.

Greetings and thanks for supporting the Thompson Rivers University WolfPack. This is a special year for the university as it celebrates its 40th anniversary. The WolfPack athletic program is also recognizing its past. As you can see on the cover, we have come a long way since our program first started. Not only have the hair styles and uniforms changed, but we are now competing as a full fledged member of Canadian Interuniversity Sports in basketball and volleyball.

Our athletes continue to be among not only the best in their respective leagues, but they also find the time to represent Canada Internationally. Colin Carson of men’s volleyball and Greg Stewart of men’s basketball were both on National teams this past summer.

Not only do our athletes excel on the court, pitch, diamond or rink but they continue to set standards in the classroom. This past year, we had our most Academic All-Canadians and Scholar Athletes with 31.

2010–11 will see us host the Canadian College Baseball Conference for a second straight year but also the Canadian College Athletic Association golf championship at the Dunes October 12–15.

This season will see our athletes get even more involved in the community. Not only will you see them at events like the Terry Fox Runs, but we have made steps to improve our presence in Kamloops area schools. We are striving to not only produce

good student-athletes, but young people who will go out into the community and make an immediate contribution where ever they choose to start their lives.

Not only is it beneficial for our athletes to become entrenched in the Kamloops lifestyle, but residents have responded by supporting them. Attendance at all of our sporting games and matches have increased over the past three years.

Again, I would like to thank everyone who have given much time and talent to varsity athletics. I’d also like to thank the coaches and those campus and community members who support our athletic teams by coming to games, buying tickets or volunteering their time and talents with the TRU Sports Task Force.

On behalf of all of us at TRU Athletics and Recreation, a very warm welcome and heartfelt thanks for supporting our teams.

Sincerely

Kenneth M. OlynykDirector, TRU Athletics & Recreation

Scott Reeves – Women’s BasketballScott Reeves 2010–11 marks his fifth season on the bench of the WolfPack. It is expected that the patience that he has shown with the last two recruiting classes that now enter their third and fourth year of CIS play: Diane Schuetze

(Vernon), Tracy Kocs (Port Moody), and Lindsay Dekoff (Chilliwack), Kaitlyn Widsten (Tsawwassen), Kailey Colonna (Invermere), Michelle Dimond (Port Moody will pay off.

Hiring Scott was a major coup for TRU. In the final three years of coaching high school basketball (Brookswood in Langley BC), he had a record of 124–2. He led them to three straight Provincial “AAA” Championship titles. Scott has had an incredible record of developing young athletes both athletically and academically.

Since coming to Kamloops, Scott, his wife Tara and three children have quickly established themselves as the ‘first family of basketball.” Not only does he coach the WolfPack, but was a founder of the Kamloops Basketball Academy. The KBA has grown from 30 players to over 100. Some of whom have moved onto playing basketball at the college level.

Scott spent two summers coaching BC’s Under 15 Girls Basketball team where his accomplishments included a silver medal at the Nationals which were held in Kamloops. Most recently, Scott coached the Okanagan BC Summer Games team in which they took gold. A number of recent Kamloops athletes have gone on to excel provincially and nationally.

Scott holds a Bachelor degree in Human Kinetics from Trinity Western, a Bachelor degree in Education from the University of BC and is a certified Master Learning Facilitator through the new NCCP coaching development model.

His passion for basketball in nearly matched for golf. Scott’s wife name is Tara and they have 3 children; Kanesha (14), Josh (12) and Mckenna (7).

Scott has 2 assistants working with him. Chuck Ferguson has been with Scott since he first came to Kamloops as the Head Coach and this year Cindy Mavety is joining the staff in her first year.

Scott Clark – Men’s BasketballScott was hired as the head coach of the program on May 20, 2010. Clark joins the WolfPack program as the team’s second head coach in their 5 year Canada West History. He left the Simon Fraser University

Clan after spending 15 years at the helm of their men’s program, making the playoffs each of the last 10 years.

“This is a great opportunity,” says Clark, who is moving closer to his parents and friends in Kelowna, BC. “ I’m eager to lay a foundation on a program which has improved, but not had a great deal of success at the CIS level.”

Clark describes himself as a coach who is demanding but fair. He immediately jumped into the Kamloops basketball scene by holding shooting clinics, starting the Junior Wolves program for boys in grades 4 and above along with a mentorship program for athletes from grade 10–12. Clark holds a Masters Degree in Coaching. He attended the National Coaching Institute in Victoria and has been a CIS coach for 15 years. He moved to Kamloops with his oldest son Brett, who will be attending TRU as a first year student. His wife Carla and son Cole (17) will remain in Langley until he graduates from high school in 2010–11.

With Simon Fraser, Clark was 113–96 over the last decade. His assistants with the ‘Pack are Del Komarniski and Curt Dale, who worked together the past few seasons with the South Kamloops Titans senior boys program.

Brad Pape – BadmintonBrad was named both the Canadian College Athletics Assocation and BC Colleges Athletic Association coach of the year in 2007–08. Last season (2009–10) he was named BCCAA coach of the year for a second time. He has coached

the badminton team at TRU since its inception in the mid 1980’s. In the past, the team has earned many medals in both indiividual and team competition at the Provincials and National Championships. Brad’s assistant coach is former player Robin Barlow.

Keith Lundgren – Women’s Volleyball Keith became the third head coach of the WolfPack women’s volleyball program on April 19, 2010. Lundgren comes to TRU after spending two seasons with the N.A.I.T Ooks of the Alberta College Athletic Association.

“I’m very excited and ready for the challenge,” says Lundgren, who is no stranger to turning around post secondary teams. He was the head coach of the Lakeland College Rustlers (ACAC) from 2005 to 2008 where he turned a 2–20 team to having its third winning season on record since 1994. With NAIT, Lundgren took a 6 and 14 team in 2008–09 to a record of 15 and 8 this past year. “We went 8 and 3 in the second half of the year,” he says. “ It was a lot of fun seeing our hard work come through in the competitive arena.”

Lundgren has been involved in coaching volleyball for 14 years. He is a fully certified level 4 coach and graduated from the National Coaching Institute in Victoria. His first taste of post secondary volleyball was when he was the head coach of the Camosun Cougars women’s program (BC College Athletic Association) from 2003–2005. He has also coached in the Saskatchewan and Alberta Provincial programs and was the Western Canada Games head coach for Saskatchewan’s women’s team in 2006.

His assistant coaches are Daniela Bercelli (2nd year), and Marilia Vasconcellos (1st year). All three are former players with either the WolfPack or UCC program.

Ray Chadwick – Men’s BaseballRay Chadwick has been running the baseball program at TRU for seven years now. Chadwick is a former major league player (Angels, Red Sox, White Sox, Royals and Mariners from 1983–1994). He has a very strong reputation

in North America as the coach to play for and his players have had continual success under his tutelage. His clubs have won the Canadian College Baseball Conference Championship in 2005, 2007 and 2009. His assistant coaches this year are former players Yoshi Nakamura, Scott Nevison, Pat Brown, and longtime assistant Dave Arthurs. The WolfPack will be hosting the 2011 CCBC Championships at Norbrock Stadium in May.

Pat Hennelly – Men’s Volleyball Since Thompson Rivers University became a member of the CIS, no program has been more successful than Mens Volleyball. In his five years at the helm, Pat Hennelly has taken a team which was 1–20 in its first season

to a bronze medal victory in the National Championships in 2008. They have won two bronze medals in Canada West play and hosted the CIS National Championships in March.

Pat has an extensive coaching background from several different programs such as Northern Arizona (NCAA Division 1) and as an assistant coach with both the men’s and women’s programs at UBC.

He and his new assistant coach, former UCC and University of Manitoba player Drew Venables were the coaches of BC’s Under 16 and Under 17 boys team this past summer.

Pat played for five years with Team BC including the 1989 Canada games and was a CCAA Silver medal winner with Langara College.

He holds two Bachelor degrees from UBC, one in Human Kinetics and the other in education as well has his level three NCCP coaching certificate.

Pat will work with Venables and Jake Schmidt, a former player and coach with UCC and current principal of the Bert Edwards Science and Technology Elementary school.

Tom McManus – Women’s SoccerTom enters his second season as head coach of the program. He is no stranger to coaching at the elite level. Tom has a National “A” Liscence from Soccer Canada and also has certification from the Scottish Football Association.

He has coached a many different levels of the sport: from Canada’s National team, to the CIS (McMaster, University of Saskatchewan) to pros (Winnipeg Fury of the Canadian Soccer League). He is also the head coach of the Kamloops Youth Soccer Association. Tom was elected into the Manitoba Sports Hall of Fame in 2009.

He played professional soccer for 15 years before turning to coaching. He married Pat this summer.

His assistant coaches again this year are Glen Archer and Kelly Shantz, who’ve been with the program for a number of years.

Sean Wallace and John Antulov – Men’s SoccerSean Wallace and John Antulov are the co-head coaches for a fourth season. Both men are very well respected locally, provincially and nationally. Wallace is a two time winner of the BC College Athletic Association Male Soccer coach of the year honor. He has been involved in the men’s soccer program for over 25 years — as a player, assistant and head coach. 2010 sees him coaching his oldest son Justin at the University level.

Antulov, a former Simon Fraser University Clan, Vancouver 86’er and Vancouver Croatia player is a National “A” Liscence coach who is the former head coach of the Kamloops Youth Soccer Association.

They are assisted this season again by Hee Young Cheung. The former TRU player is into his third year as an assistant.

Bill Bilton Jr. – Men’s GolfBill Bilton is into his third year as the coach of TRU’s men’s golf squad.

Ironically he was the coach when the old University College of the Cariboo had a Golf Program in 1998–99. “It just made sense to get together with the people

at TRU and try and put this program together.”

The Dunes at Kamloops will not only be the home course for the WolfPack Golf Team, which plays in the BC College Athletics Assocation, but will host the Canadian College Athletic Assocation Championships in October.

For Bilton Junior, he wants to give back to the next generation of golfers: “For me, It’s tremendous. I’ve had a lot of success in my career. But to come back and see the friends and family and become a part of the community is something that I am really looking forward to. I think we can have a great program at TRU.”

Bilton has been a pro golfer since 1993. He has 15 professional wins under his belt, and was nominated for the British Columbia player of the year in 1999. BIlton Junior has been living in Florida for the past few years with his two young daughters, golfing and pursuing a real estate/mortgage career. He lives seven months of the year in Kamloops.

Lorne Cumming – Men’s HockeyOn May 12, 2010 the TRU Wolfpack Men’s Hockey team hired it’s second Head Coach when Lorne Cumming came on board to lead the team into the 2010–2011 season.

Cumming takes over from Chris Hans, who

will focus on building the team’s long and short-term recruiting strategies as well as potential crossover schedules with other Canadian Collegiate programs and the NCAA. Chris will also play a supporting role in representing the Wolfpack at the BCIHL league governance level.

“I’m excited to get back into the role of head coach in a competitive league, and look forward to building a group of players into a team that works very hard for each other,” says the 43 year old Cumming. His coaching resume includes being the first head coach and general manager of the Chase Chiefs and of the Kootenay International Junior Hockey League (2007–08). He has also been involved with various levels of both minor and junior hockey including the role of advance scout for the Western Hockey League Vancouver Giants. Cumming is looking forward to working with University level athletes, “I want our guys to know that we are looking forward to them having success in the classroom and on the ice. Our team is going to have on-ice goals that will require a lot of commitment and preparation, and as a staff we want them to apply that same focus to being excellent students.”

Lorne is a father of four (Devon, Matt, Robyn and Cory) who has been married to Lynette for 23 years and is an employee at Domtar in Kamloops. He will be assisted by former NHL and WHL player Steve Gainey. Gainey spent two seasons as an assistant coach with the Kamloops Blazers of the Western Hockey League before starting to work with the Major Midget Program in Kamloops. Andre Larouche will remain as goaltending coach with the WolfPack.

8 Thompson Rivers University, Kamloops, BC

Thompson Rivers University hosts their first CIS Championship, the WolfPack officially join the CIS and hockey returns to TRU Athletics. Those were the three big stories of the 2009–10 athletic season at Thompson Rivers University.

After being a probationary member of the CIS and the Canada West Athletic Conferences, Thompson Rivers University officially became part of the prestigious organizations. This followed their successful hosting of the 2010 CIS National men’s volleyball championships at the Tournament Capital Center. That event saw TRU entertain seven of the other top schools in the nation. It was the first time the City of Kamloops had hosted such a high calibre event. Crowds were entertained by the highest level of volleyball in the country.

September 2009 marked the return of college hockey to TRU. The Kamloops Collegiate Hockey Society, a community organization brought hockey back. Playing out of Memorial Arena and the BC Intercollegiate Hockey Association, the club played to wild crowds. On most Saturday nights, over a thousand people watched the WolfPack, who were unbeaten on home ice at the Victoria Street arena all season.

The following is a synopsis of how the WolfPack teams did in 2009–10.

Men’s Soccer:The WolfPack men’s squad enjoyed a great regular season where they went 6–15 until the final weekend of the campaign when they fell on October 18 to Douglas College (the eventual provincial champions). That set the stage for an early exit in the BCCAA playoffs. They fell 1–0 to Langara College in the quarter finals. Kyle Bowman was a first team BCCAA All–Star. Brynden Swint and Peter Loncar were chosen for the second All–Star team.

Women’s Soccer:Tom McManus took over the program from the retired Eric Schweizer. He took the team to a bronze medal finish in the BCCAA playoffs despite the fact that for most of the season, he did not have a healthy keeper. They finished the regular campaign with a record of 6 wins, four losses and two draws, first in their pool. Cassie Drummond and Jessie Lebert were first team BCCAA All–Stars. Alanna Bekkering, Abbey McAuley, Bronwyn Crawford and Heather Lloyd were second team selections.

Men’s Golf:After winning the CCAA Championship in 2008, Bill Bilton’s crew suffered from the loss of three of their top five golfers. They were led by the Gruber triplets — Adam, Brett and Mark. They wound up fifth in the BCCAA and 8th at the CCAA Championships.

Men’s Hockey:The WolfPack made their debut in the BC Intercollegiate Hockey League one to remember. They finished second in both the regular

season and in the playoffs — losing to champion SFU by only one goal. Two members of the TRU squad were named to the BCIHL All–Star team (defenceman David Boychuk and forward Jassi Sangha).

Men’s Baseball:The WolfPack had another strong

campaign in the Canadian College Baseball Conference. They went into the spring season as the defending

champions. After posting a record of 20–8, the WolfPack hosted the CCBC Championships last May (2010) at

Norbrock Stadium. Thompson Rivers lost in the championship final to the Vancouver Island

Baseball Institute. WolfPack players Danny Moore, Dillon Morgan, David Hole, Scott

Nevison, Yoshi Nakamura and Jordan Broatch were all named

CCBC All–Stars.

Women’s Volleyball:The team finished 1 and 19 but individually, Anna Dyakiewicz was second in the Canada West in kills. Kristen Knudskov emerged as one of the top rookies in the league.

Open your eyes and look for some man, or some work for the sake of men, which needs a

Lundgren Clark Cumming

As the curtain goes up on the 2010–11 season for the Thompson Rivers University WolfPack, there are two new faces among the CIS fulltime coaching ranks and the hockey club has filled the vacant head coach position.

Keith Lundgren and Scott Clark have notched their place in WolfPack history when they became the women’s volleyball and men’s basketball program’s second full time head coaches. Keith replaces interim volleyball coach Cal Wolford and Scott Clark replaces interim basketball coach Thom Gillespie. Lorne Cumming replaced Chris Hans who stepped aside but is still working with the collegiate hockey society.

Since their appointments, all three have been working hard in their respective positions. Clark and Lundgren face the challenge of raise the level of the programs to playoff contenders in the ever tough Canada West conference.

Coach Clark put it best when asked about the task ahead. “We have a blank canvass,” he said. “The challenge of building from the ground up was something that intrigued me. I felt the community would continue to support the team and my being integral to growing that support is something which is appealing and a lot of fun.”

“The friendly atmosphere and the support we receive from administration was my main selling point,” Lundgren explained about coming to TRU. “The growth of the University is inspiring.”

Cumming stated. “I’m a believer in continuous growth, I’ve seen that trait in the WolfPack culture and I felt it was a great fit for me as coach.”

All three men have recruited extensively, the women’s volleyball team as far away as Australia, in their attempts to bringing top notch student/athletes to Thompson Rivers University as they craft their programs into ones which will find victory more often than not.

The Summer of 2010 saw Thompson Rivers University and the WolfPack athletics program represented on the international stage. Three members of the WolfPack men’s volleyball team

were involved in various activites which brought notoriety to the program.Gord Perrin (Creston, BC) marked his third summer with the National volleyball team program by being chosen to first the Canadian senior “B” team and then the National “A” Squad which went to the World Championships in Italy. Perrin became the first TRU athlete ever to make a National team.

Colin Carson (Prince George, BC) was selected as one of the setters on the Junior National men’s volleyball team. That squad finished in the medals at the NORCECA qualifying tournament held in Gatineau, Quebec in August. That placing allows Canada to make its second straight appearance at the World Junior Championships. It is expected that Carson will be a member of that squad which will be chosen in the Spring/Summer of 2011.As well, Matt Krueger (Abbotsford, BC) spent some

time in South Korea. He was training at the prestigious SKK University

in Seoul. This opportunity came as a result of a long friendship

between WolfPack head coach Pat Hennelly and Dr. Han-Joo Eom. Dr. Eom did a sabbatical at TRU in 2009–10 and helped with the men’s volleyball program.Greg Stewart, the 2009–10 Canada West Defensive

Player of the Year in men’s basketball also competed internationally. This time though, he played volleyball. He was a member of the Canadian National sitting men’s team which competed at the World Championships held in the USA.
