MACHU PICCHU - THE CROWN JEWEL OF THE INCA EMPIRE

Machu Picchu sits high above the Urubamba River in the tropical cloud forest of the Amazon Jungle. Built sometime around 1450, the citadel was divided into three sections—ceremonial, residential, and agricultural—and was inhabited by the Incas for approximately one hundred years before a sudden mass exodus. Lush foliage eventually obscured the mountain-top citadel, and it sat undiscovered until 1911.
