For the past few years, I have been in search of Gorsky World
War II veterans living in the New York City region. My pursuit
began shortly after I became a group leader, known as Madrich, for
Ezra USA.
Ezra USA is a Jewish youth movement organization which was
founded in 2002 and serves about 7,000 Russian-speaking Jews. Its
major goal is to introduce and unite Jewish youth to their cultural
heritage. To fulfill this goal, Ezra strives to show its members
Jewish historical sites by operating various activities, mainly
leading Birthright expeditions to Israel. An additional activity
Ezra is involved in is the Veterans Appreciation Project.
One of my first volunteering experiences as a Madrich was to
help organize the annual Veterans Appreciation Project in 2008.
This project sets out to demonstrate gratitude to the World War II
veterans for the sacrifices and contributions they have made in
fighting against the Nazi regime. Madrichim visit Russian-Jewish
veterans living in New York City every year in the month of May to
personally thank them for their noble services during WWII. Each
veteran receives honorary gifts, including certificates
acknowledging their courage and selflessness as soldiers.
In preparation for the upcoming Veterans Appreciation Project, I
ask you to help me in the search for Gorsky World War II veterans.
This project cannot be realized without your support. One hundred
percent of the raised funds go towards purchas-ing gifts for the
veterans. If you know of any Gorsky WWII veterans, please forward
the information to Bakhtiyar Nisimov at [email protected]. This is
a wonderful opportunity to show our appreciation to our veterans as
well as to listen to their unique stories that they have to share
with us.
