Energy flow – an example
Input Energy –
Fuel
Eg: 100 Joules
Generation of
electricity – another
form of energy
Eg: 40 Joules
Transmission
of energy
Eg: 35 Joules
Usage of electricity
Eg: Only 3.5 Joules
is converted to light
* Note: At each stage energy is dissipated i.e waste. Therefore, we need energy efficiency at every stage.

Why focus on Energy?
Save energy consumption
• Improving energy efficiency at any step
• Cost savings
Reduce the emission
during combustion
• Reduction of GHG emission from combustion
Resource conservation
• Fuels used in energy generation is limited

A Management System is the
framework of processes and
procedures used to ensure that an
organization can fulfill all tasks
required to achieve its objectives
Most MS standards operate on the
continual improvement cycle:
Plan, Do, Check, Act.
ISO 50001 is a system based
initiative for energy conservation

Detailed audit in lighting system normally results in
considerable savings. Illumance readings with a lux
meter should be the basis for comparative purpose.
The study covers measurement of lux level at work
place and at various points of lighting usage.
Energy efficiency initiatives for lighting system
includes:
Timer control
Photocell control for street lighting
Use of energy efficient lighting
Grouping of lighting system for flexibility in
lighting control
Installation of microprocessor based controllers
Optimum usage of day lighting
Installation of servo stabilizer for lighting feeder

Train persons working for or on behalf of the organization and ensure their awareness and competence;
Establish processes for internal and external communication;
Establish and implement document & operational control(s);
Ensure that energy efficiency is considered during the design phase of significant energy use and during the procurement of heavy energy consuming equipments.
