Dear Friends,

I feel so conscious that I have not been able to support the Village

clubs and societies as much as I have in the past. I am working

throughout the whole team as we go through the Diocesan process

for ‘vacancy’. We have just finished the first stage with Melanie

Griffiths, our Diocesan Advisor talking and meeting with as many

people as possible. She has now written a report which will go to

the Area Dean. Melanie has commented several times on the

warmth with which she has been welcomed in all of our churches.

We shall then go through a period of ‘Leadership Development’

which will give people the opportunity to develop their gifts further.

It is also a period of discernment for putting together a profile for

the new Rector. We cannot determine the length of this process.

Once we have a profile, then we make a request to the Area Dean

and Bishop to appoint such a person.

In the meantime I would like to thank you for the support and

understanding that you are giving to me. You can rest assured that

the Wardens and the Ministry Team are working very hard to

ensure that this process will not take any longer than necessary. We

have become a friendly and very supportive group and already we

are thanking God for the people who are flourishing as they put

their shoulders to the wheel for the Kingdom of God. There are

many good things happening in all of our churches.

Now it’s the holiday season and if you are going away we pray that

you will have safe journeys and wonderful holidays. God calls us to

rest and take time to reflect; it is so important in these days where

we seem to live our lives to the full but where stress is taking its toll

in the workplace. Happy Holidays!

God Bless,

Vicky Fleming

Assisting Wildlife (SMAWL)

The volunteer evening held on the 17 June at the conservation site was well attended with volunteers (9 adults + 4

The work carried out was to keep the site clear for people to visit and envisage their ideas for the competition. We are hopeful

on receiving a variety of ideas.

We are looking for additional volunteers to carry out the future work. Time spent is

flexible from 30 minutes to a full day when you are available. If you would like to register your name as a volunteer on

South Marston Parish Council News

Parish Clerk Vacancy There has been a good response to the advertisement for the Parish

Council Clerk vacancy. A selection panel will be forming a shortlist of

candidates on 1st July for interviews

on the 9th July. The appointment of the new clerk will be made at the

meeting of the Parish Council on 20th July.

Village Development The workshop held by NEWMasterplanning on the 26th

and 27th May was very well

attended. On the first evening attendees were split into groups

and ideas on which aspects of the village it was important to retain

and where possible development

could take place were discussed and assessed. Attendees were

generally open minded in their approach to the exercise and there

was a good exchange of views and

ideas. The output from the first

evening formed the basis for the second part of the workshop where

NEWMasterplanning presented options for varying sizes of

development that attempted to

maintain the key characteristic of the current village identified the

previous evening.

The Parish Council is now clarifying the Borough Council’s new strategy

for development to the East of Swindon following the recent

announcements of new government policies on major development and

the abolition of the Regional Spatial

Strategy Groups. In particular, clarification is required on the

impact on the total number of dwellings the Borough requires,

the timescale for development and

the policy on the development of brownfield sites to reduce greenfield

site development.

To the gentleman who

removed the abandoned pile

of dog poo from the chil-

dren's playground last week,

THANK YOU.

You reinstated my faith in all

the responsible dog walkers

in the village.

Hannah Jones,

mother of two 'dog poo' magnets.

THANK YOUTHANK YOUTHANK YOUTHANK YOU

THANK YOU to each and every kind villager who sent us cards, brought flowers, food and drink, cooked us an evening meal and generally gave us a big moral lift when the cottage burnt down.

Also, THANK YOU to the small army of men and women who rolled up their sleeves and turned up with their community spirit and good humour, spades, forks, shovels and wheelbarrows to clear the moun-tain of stinking, sodden mass we were left with. And lastly, a huge THANK YOU to the younger ones who worked equally hard and cheerfully for long hours, (I think they quite enjoyed getting filthy!).

We have been so warmed and heartened by the many villagers (some of whom are strangers to us) who have expressed their sorrow at losing what they described as a landmark of the village. It has become very clear to us over the past couple of weeks just how important our beautiful cottage is to so many people and how deeply affected they’ve been by the fire and destruction. We hope they will take comfort from knowing that Gordon Cottage will, once again, be lovingly restored to its former glory – we can’t wait.

Thanks again to you all !!!!!!! Kindest regards, Alf and Gloria Harmer....

Dandelion by Gavin Hoffen

Dandelion is the first novel by South Marston resident and local estate agent, Gavin Hoffen.

Set mainly in and around Swindon and South Marston, many of the locations will be familiar to Tower & Tap readers. The story starts in the Second World War but quickly switches to more modern times with the discovery of an important piece of wartime treasure by “Hammy”, the hero of the story. News of the discovery quickly leaks out and we are led on a complex story involving Churchill’s wartime government and modern day spies.

Gavin is obviously a keen local historian and aviation enthusiast and his knowledge of these subjects quickly becomes apparent as you read the novel, adding to its authenticity. So, if you like an exciting plot and are interested in local history and aircraft, then this is the book for you.
