Volume 74 Issue 8 August 2019

We are moving right along with our East Campus Task Force,

a committee of board members focused on taking the

appropriate next steps to determine what lies ahead for the

land where our cottages currently sit. On August 12 at

9:00 a.m., we will have one of the finalist development

companies present at the Town Hall meeting to give us

insight into current trends in senior living, including housing,

programs, and services – it promises to be a wonderfully

informative meeting that you won’t want to miss.

One trend we’ll hear more about, one that I’m confident is here to stay, is the focus

on health & wellness. Today’s seniors demand more from the communities in which

they live; programming needs to focus on the total person – social, emotional,

physical, intellectual, and spiritual wellness. We have exciting things already

happening here on campus with our award-winning Life Enrichment program that

hits upon many of the dimensions of wellness mentioned above, the Pain

Management Clinic opening this month under the direction of Dr. Murtaza, and a

partnership with Accelerated Care Plus to provide the most cutting-edge and

effective modalities in rehabilitation, just to name a few.

As we continue to determine what will be developed on the East Campus, I am

personally hopeful that we will see one component be a Health & Wellness Center

that will allow us to continue with the outstanding work already being done here at

Plymouth Place and expand our programming even more. Our mission at Plymouth

Place is to help each individual resident live well, and exciting opportunities lie ahead

as we reimagine our campus and our programming. We are committed to keeping

this wonderful community vibrant and relevant, and we appreciate your support in

this commitment.

The last few weeks, several of us have been discussing creation and creating. Along with this

we have also been discussing evolution. It would seem that our world is still evolving, still

changing, constantly moving. Nothing is static around us. It is all full of life, and life also means

that there are changes. Think of it as more creating. One theologian offers the challenge that

in our zeal to succeed, we may actually be de-creating creation, and we have to be very careful

about that. This led me to think about how am I still a part of the evolving creative work of our

world? What am I constructively working on to continue being a new creation from God? I

rather like the reminder that I am not looking at the created world, but am a part of the created,

and still creating, world. May you also find joy in what you too are creating.

We could not have asked for better weather for our trip to Brookfield Zoo! It was very well

attended and everyone enjoyed the tram ride.

Our music and entertainer this month will be Edizon Dayao on August 1. We love his soft

music and Hawaiian beat. He will perform in the Education Room; please join us.

Our monthly trip will take us to Lake Shore Drive to enjoy the sunny view of the lake and the

Chicago Skyline.

Thursday, Aug. 29, 2:00 p.m. Dole Hall This month we will study Confucianism, the way of

life founded by Confucius in the 6th–5th century BCE and followed by the Chinese people for

more than two millennia. Although transformed over time, it is still the substance of

learning, the source of values, and the social code of the Chinese. Its influence has also

extended to other countries, particularly Korea, Japan, and Vietnam.

Plymouth Place Staff: Rebecca Mathis

Chief Financial Officer

Rebecca Mathis was born in Cambridge, England, and

moved to the U.S. when she was ten. At that time she

was certain she wanted to be a doctor. However, an

accounting class her senior year in high school led her

to realize she could combine both her interests in health

care and accounting. Rebecca attended Michigan State

University, graduating with a B.S. in accounting, a C.P.A.

and then an M.B.A. with a concentration in Health

Administration from Benedictine University. Her first job

after college was as an auditor for Medicare in Chicago. She then joined

Columbia La Grange Hospital in 1997 which began a twenty-two year career

with the Adventist Hinsdale and La Grange Memorial Hospitals in various

financial roles.

As CFO/VP of Amita Adventist Hinsdale and La Grange Memorial Hospitals,

she was the top candidate to replace the CFO responsibility formally
