George “Rocky” Rockwell1-5-1937 - 8-17-2018

Born January 5, 1937 to Nyle and Helen Rockwell in Grand Canyon, AZ. In 1940, Nyle transferred with Babbits as a butcher and moved the family to Phoenix, AZ. In 1941, with World War II in full swing, Nyle went to Goodyear to be a Weights and Balances Engineer. With Nyle being gone “from sun up to sun down,” Rocky and his mom, Helen, were very close. After the war ended and not wanting to transfer with Goodyear, Nyle and Helen bought a service station where Rocky spent most of his time after school and summers. During this time, the family raced midget cars at all the local tracks. Rocky learned to drive by being the push truck and getting the cars started. While in high school, Rocky worked so much that there was very little time for any extras, but he found time and a love for R.O.T.C. He became an officer and marksman for the program. After finishing up

at Creighton High School in Phoenix, AZ, Rocky’s parents decided it was time to get out of the valley and move north. They bought “Rocky’s Old Stage Station,” located 25 miles outside of Holbrook, AZ.Rocky would go to college at Eastern New Mexico with engineering on his mind. With his dad doing time with Goodyear, that was the way to go. After his first year of college he came back to the “Stage” for the summer and worked as a surveyor at Petrified Forest. He decided that summer that this was not the job for him and set out to find a new college. He drove down to A.S.U. where they were not very accommodating so on his way back home he stopped at N.A.U. They were very welcoming and this was close to the “Stage” where he could help out on the weekends and summer. While home, Rocky was sent to Holbrook to do some banking business. It was there where he met Kathy Perkins. He would let people go in front of him just for the chance to talk to her. They courted until Rocky could finish his Masters and on July 21, 1962 he made Kathy a “Rockwell” and their journey together would begin. That same year Rocky started teaching at Winslow High School where he would spend the next 50 years teaching and mentoring countless students. If Rocky wasn’t teaching kids or rebuilding something, he was working on his hobby, stamp collecting. He was a member of the Elks for 57 years and ran the youth programs for many years. The youth of Winslow meant so much to him.It meant the world to Rocky to see his children, Mary and James, graduate, but to have each of his grandkids (Krystal, Tyler, Lindsey, Brittany, Gabriella, and Tater) graduate from the school he loved so much made him the happiest. Being so involved with the school, Rocky never really liked the thought of retirement. He always missed the kids and working with them. The kids gave him so much joy when they took the skills he showed them and went on to make something of themselves. He also enjoyed when previous students came to visit him when they were in town. After retirement, Rocky and Kathy were stricken with very serious health issues. Rocky lost the love of his life in 2015 to ALS. He selflessly placed her well being before his own health. After a difficult battle with cancer, he went to be with Kathy and his parents on August 17, 2018. Rocky is survived by his daughter, Mary Helen Rockwell; son, James Rockwell and his wife Karen Rockwell; grandchildren, Krystal and Desmond Gowdy, Brittany Rockwell, Gabriella Rockwell, Rocky Tater Rockwell, Tyler Williams, and Lindsey Williams; great-grandchildren, Mason Farinas and Eli Farinas.Rocky is preceded in death by his parents, Nyle and Helen Rockwell and his beloved wife of 54 years, Kathryn Rockwell.Services will be at the LDS Church in Winslow, AZ on Saturday, August 25, 2018 at 11:00 a.m.
