UELY YORK

Heritage and HistoryYork is the oldest inland European settlement in Western Australia, situated on the Avon River on Ballardong Noongar land.

After thousands of years of occupation by Ballardong Noongar people, the area was first settled by Europeans in 1831, a town established in 1835 and the first buildings erected in 1836.

The region was important throughout the 19th century for sheep and grain farming and was renowned for its sandalwood trade. York boomed during the gold rush as the last rail stop before the walk to the goldfields.

Today, the town is renowned for its heritage buildings, art scene and annual festivals.
