Skies and Clouds in WatercolorSponsored by Winsor & NewtonInstructor: Mark HilesSaturday, September 14, 1–4pm$50, all supplies provided!Working with color, shapes, soft edges, light and painting from light to dark will all be covered in a quick demo. Using reference photos, you will create three paintings of the sky using what you’ve learned from exercises in the demo as well as other watercolor techniques that we will review. We will then have a casual group critique of our work, to discuss what we’ve discovered in these processes.Reference photos will be provided.

Basic Oil Painting: Opening Our Eyes through Everyday Objects, with OilsSponsored by Winsor & Newton Instructor: Wendy CohenSunday, September 15, 1–4pm$50, all supplies providedThe basics of oil painting will be introduced, including how to set up oils on the painting palette, how to mix and blend oils using different paint mediums, and exploring different types of brushes and their shapes and brushwork techniques. In this workshop, you will be introduced to the rudiments of painting with oil paints. Oil paints are dry pigments mixed with an oil medium which acts as a binder. We will survey handling and application techniques of oils and mediums, and experiment with various surfaces to paint on. You will learn the fundamentals of setting up a palette as well as exercises for color-mixing along with learning proper care of your tools. Oil paints are forgiving and an ideal medium for the novice!Please bring a piece of fruit and a simple object for your painting subject, as we will be examining the magic of everyday objects with oil paints.

Combining encaustic with other materials and media opens a world of creative possibilities! Learn about painting with this ancient medium of beeswax, pigment and damar resin in this hands-on introductory workshop where you’ll learn safe studio practices and the encaustic painting basics. Various techniques will also be demonstrated including how to incorporate mixed media processes with encaustic such as photo transfers, embedded collage, glazes with pigment sticks, and incorporating found materials to create layered works with depth and an organic luminosity.The instructor will provide an assortment of marking tools and brushes, papers, photographs, fibers, and other natural and found materials for students to incorporate into their paintings. *Students are encouraged to bring their own personal items and photocopies they would like to use.

Learn about this amazing process, which allows you to print an image onto paper, cardboard, fabric and wood many times over, all without the use of machinery. Different printing methods such as drawing fluid/screen filler and photo emulsion will be shown, through a combination of demonstrations and hands-on exercises. The instructor will also incorporate additional techniques related to image creation, with

Learn the basics of Acrylic painting! Learn about different paints, painting surfaces, brushes, and other simple tools used to get started in this exciting medium. You’ll learn how to navigate the complicated world of acrylic mediums and additives. We will begin with a minimum investment using a basic palette of nine colors, a few brushes, a few found objects , a simple painting surface and one all-purpose medium that will serve you well for both mixing and varnishing your final work. You will enjoy the opportunity to experiment with a variety of additional mediums provided by the class. Use simple” color scanning” techniques to record how color is affected by light as seen in a small still life set up. Use changes in color, value, and intensity along with reflective color to infuse your painting with visual excitement.Please bring a few items (no more than three) for a simple still life.

Have you wondered how a watercolor artist can render realistic images with media that typically offers less control? J. M. Littleton reveals her process from preliminary drawings and building up transparent washes, with extensive use of color theory, to finished paintings. J. M. will discuss and show examples of how to select an appropriate image to paint from. She will discuss and show exemplars of how to create a

preliminary drawing with the use of a grid, as well as how to transfer the drawing to watercolor paper. Students will then have a demonstration and practice flat washes with a flat brush & flat and gradated washes with a round brush, utilizing grey tones.Color theory & exercises will be introduced and discussed. Handouts will be given that include the entire process as well as a detailed supply list.

This approach to painting will give your work color vibrancy. The trick is to select colors of the same value. Then paint each large shape with multiple color changes. The color changes merge together because they are the same value. You will learn to control values while making your paintings shimmer with color! We will be working in watercolor in this workshop, but you can apply these techniques with acrylic as well. Test your results by photographing your work and printing it out in black and white.

Explore a range of techniques for getting imagery into your acrylic paintings during this hands-on workshop! Students will get to make image

transfers, monoprints, and learn about some options for drawing on acrylic surfaces. As our projects develop, discover a variety of paint applications like glazing, stains, and blends that will further enhance your work! We will work with GOLDEN acrylic color, grounds, and mediums along with graphite, soft pastels, stencils, masks and more All workshop-use GOLDEN paints/mediums, brushes/tools, painting surfaces, and other miscellaneous supplies needed for class will be provided by the Instructor. Students are asked to bring reference images that inspire them (i.e. florals, landscapes, animals, abstracts), an apron/smock or wear “paint clothes”, supplies to take notes, and a large piece of cardboard or a trash bag to lay down in your car (in case any of our surfaces are still tacky at the end of the day). Zentangle®: Creative Cartouches new!Instructor: Julie Allison, CZTSaturday, November 16, 1–4pm$45, most supplies provided, students will receive small list for additional suppliesNOTE: Pre-requisite – Introduction to Zentangle® class

Cartouche: a decorative frame surrounding an image or an inscription. It also refers to the oblong figure that

encloses a sovereign’s name on ancient Egyptian monuments. Create a decorative frame in true Zentangle style! Students should bring a large printed copy of a photograph to be cut and placed inside a Zentangle Cartouche Frame. PLEASE NOTE THAT THESE WILL BE CUT, SO NO ORIGINAL PHOTOGRAPHS PLEASE! Your image can be a picture of one or more people, pets etc. - something you might put into a locket, BUT MUCH LARGER. (Please note that large group photos will result in a smaller overall image with features not very visible.) Minimum enrollment is 6 students. Please bring your Basic Zentangle kit from the Intro class.

Mixed MediaInstructor: Wendy CohenSunday, November 17, 1–4pm $50, all supplies providedMixed Media Art is an endless storehouse of techniques, materials and methods of expression. Dating back to the Byzantines, mixed media is a term used to describe the bringing together of a mix of different elements and artists’ materials in a variety of ways. In this workshop, we will work to unleash your talents in new and exciting ways! We’ll be combining various art materials together, including watercolor, gouache, colored pencil, pastel, graphite, ink, markers, tissue and colored paper, and charcoal, along with the technique of collage - working in this manner allows you to explore how various mediums interact.Please bring several photos that inspire you as a starting point for your work along with any simple materials such as magazines, newspaper, scrap paper, sting, ribbon, tin foil etc to incorporate in your mixed media artworks. The artistic possibilities through mixed media are infinite!

In this session, we will discuss the concepts of drawing, such as: composition, proportion, linear and atmospheric perspective, and the four elements of shading. In addition, you will learn an exercise to assist you in centering a composition, and you will render a line drawing reasonably in proportion.

Painting Skin Tones in Watercolor the Easy WaySponsored by W&NInstructor: Lois WolfordSaturday, December 14, 1–4pm$50, all supplies provided!You do not have to be an expert to paint skin tones. You just need to observe hue, intensity and color temperature. Take notice of the lighting on the model. Is it harsh or soft, warm or cool? We will paint with a limited color palette and on Hot Press (smooth) watercolor paper in order to achieve a soft look to the skin.Please bring with a head shot photo that you would like to paint. You will achieve the best, most dramatic results if the model’s face is lit from the side There should be good lights and darks on the face.

be given all necessary supplies to make the book - you will make the covers, stack the pages and sew them into a wonderful multi-use book. Your book will have at least 12 pages (6”x9”) to draw on, glue pictures to or journal on!Please arrive early to purchase needed materials – instructor will be on hand to help! Color Theory: A Symbolic Language Instructor: Wendy CohenSunday, January 19, 1–4pm$50 – All supplies providedThe symbolic language of color plays a vital role in the world in which we live. The shifting nature of color is one of the basic tools of painting. Understanding the elements of color, and how they interact with one another, is one of the largest artistic puzzles to unlock!In this workshop, we will focus on the dynamic shifting nature of color and the context in which it is surrounded, through various color theory exercises. In exploring the principles of color theory, one begins to understand how colors interact, vibrate, deepen three-dimensional space and evoke emotion, sway thinking, cause reaction and change.

Join Gail for a 3-hour PanPastel workshop, where she will teach her award-winning PanPastel technique along with a few new tricks! (Gail’s PanPastel work has received several awards, including one from the 28th International Association of Pastel Societies Juried Exhibition at the Salmagundi Club in NYC!). You will create a finished still life, focusing on light, color and form using one or two simple objects. The still life subject will be revealed at the workshop!!

Also, pastels will be added to enhance your work, so that you achieve a painting of which you can be proud. All are welcome!Note: Please bring a hairdryer if possible, though a couple of dryers will be available as well.
