History• 1940s – foreign technology over the years people started using

their own technology-(Mahindra was established in 1945)• After Independence -1947 – Govt + pvt sectors - to create automobile components manufacturing industry

• 1950s and 1960s slow growth ( nationalization and license raj

which hampered pvt sector )• After 1970s( japanees manufacturers entered the Indian market leading to

the establishment of Maruthi udyog)

• 1980s –( Indian government chose Suzuki for its joint-venture to manufacture small cars.)

• 1991 – ( gradual weakening of the license raj, a number of Indian and multi-national car companies launched operations )

Technology changes

Carburetor engines become obsolete and Multi Point Fuel Injection (MPFI) engines are the order of the days in petrol cars. • drives the maximum performance out of a vehicle by

squeezing out the maximum mileage even from the last drop of fuel that goes into the engine.

• The technology results in superior fuel combustion• better fuel management, engine performance and • reduced pollution

The Diesel engines have under gone a change from the time Rudolf to Common Rail Direct Injection (CRDI) • CRDI engine cars offer 25% more power than the normal

engine with a superior pickup, offering sometimes up to 70% more power than the conventional diesel engines.

• They are smooth, and immensely fuel efficient • reducing pollution• Reduce noise of engine• 25% more costly than other conventional engines

Latest changes

Vehicle Operations-Many microprocessor modules are dedicated to operating the vehicle. For example, the engine control unit (ECU) manages spark plug timing and maintains the prescribed mix of fuel to air and fuel emissions.Other modules - monitor climate, cruise and transmission control and blind-side and rear view cameras and a dashboard module controls the various indicator lights

Entertainmentlike sound systems, hands-free phones and remote-controlled TV.

Vehicle ProtectionIn addition to alarm systems to discourage breaking into a vehicle, the modern automobile offers code key entry and ignition that allow only a predetermined person to drive off. Tracking devices are also now available to identify and locate a stolen car.

Passenger Safety• A microprocessor module controls the anti-locking

brake system (ABS. The latest microprocessors sense an imminent collision and trigger the braking system. A factory standard module deploys the airbags. Warnings are also initiated if a door are not closed properly or a braking failure is detected.

• General Motors' OnStar system includes wireless communication, global satellite position systems (GPS) and a network of call/data centers.
