Dear Sir/s, '

I attach copy of a statement by the Minister of Economic Development, which ■was published In the Daily Press or; November 7th5 and which would anpear# tojiover the applications#} contained in your letter of *. iyft£T..

Yours J*altbfully,

FRgSS STATEMENT BY THE mXUSTZB OF ECONOMIC BEVELOPMEHU

As a resv.lt of the arrangements recently concluded by the Government Paper Mission in the United Kingdom- Canada, the United States and Scandinaviaj the Union can now look forward tc considerably increased quantities of Paper, Paperboard and allied products during 1946. It has, therefore, been decided, after careful study of the present level and distribution of existing steeks in the country and in order to meet the insistent public demaad for the termination of Commodity Controls, to suspend all Paper Control regulations as from and including December 1st, and to close the office of the Controller of Paper on December 31st, 194-5, provided 'the prospects of future supplies remain satisfactory.

* w »

As it may be some time before the increased supplies mentioned above actually reach the Union, Manufacturers, Printers and all users of paper and board are earnestly entreated, in their own Interests, to curtail their usage for the next few months to the absolute minimum, consistent with their previous consumption

, *

Any extravagant and unwarranted usage of paper at this stage only result in the necessity of reimposing the regulations again at a later date*.

It is, therefore, suggested that all paper using organisat* ion& should give earnest attention to the possibility of setting up some system of voluntary rationing of available suDp'lies, in order to safeguard their own future.

X

The Controller of Paper has requested that the thanks and appreciation of himself and his staff shall be expressed to all users of paper for their ready assistance and co-operation during the difficult supply position which has existed during the last .four years*
