Dear Friends,

The third quarter of this FY ended with a bang with TPSDI winning the Central Board of Irrigation and Power (CBIP) Award 2017 for Capacity Building and Training. TPSDI was chosen for this prestigious award for "Outstanding services to the Nation by providing state-of-art specialized training with innovative approach to training and creating a pool of committed and competent professionals equipped with appropriate technical skills to steer the Indian Power Sector". My heartiest congratulations and gratitude to all TPSDI team members and others who made this possible.

In terms of making the trainees' assessment easier and quicker, TPSDI created a transformation in the way trainees' assessment is carried out, and has set a benchmark by successfully adopting a technology used for some other purpose. This audience response system, which TPSDI has named as HHAT (Hand Held Assessment Tool), has widened the reach of TPSDI's programmes to include those who face difficulty in reading and writing and are not familiar with computers or online modes of assessments. Furthermore, it has made the assessment system more objective, faster, error free and has eliminated the laborious process of checking and storing answer sheets.

A major turning point for TPSDI in Q3 was the new direction set for TPSDI by the Top Management during the Annual Strategy Workshop. "TPSDI to become best in class Integrated Technical Training Institute for all operating level workforce and become a Legacy for the country". A great opportunity for Team TPSDI to dream big and achieve greater heights.

In Q3, TPSDI crossed the 1 lakh training person-days milestone with total tally of persons trained in FY '17 standing at 9125. TPSDI also launched a new initiative under Recognition of Previous Learning for neighborhood electricians' certification.

Training Impact assessment continued to be highly positive and taking the impact assessment forward we have moved to L4 level assessment in select courses. Placement gained traction in Q3 with good news flowing in from all TPSDI Training Centers.

Q3 saw a new initiative of training Apprentices of CGPL by TPSDI - Mundra, in addition to commencing regular Apprentice batches for Mumbai Operations at TPSDI - Shahad andTPSDI - Trombay.

In Q4 we will be starting 2nd batch of training for Supervisory Trainees (O&M) at TPSDI - Mundra.

TPSDI is all set to achieve its key targets for the year in Q4, and launch some major initiatives in the field of skill development and capacity building.

The Central Board of Irrigation & Power (CBIP), set up by the Government of India in January 1927, is a pioneer organization involved in dissemination of technical knowledge in Water Resources, Power and Renewable Energy Sectors for the past 90 years by way of bringing out technical publications, organizing conferences/workshops/seminars and imparting training to professionals & other stakeholders. CBIP is also the Indian Chapter for 10 international organizations related to Power and Water Resources Sectors.

The Board has been honoring the outstanding contributions of the individuals and institutions in the development of Water Resources, Power and Renewable Energy Sectors by conferring upon them the CBIP Awards.

The Tata Power Skill Development Institute (TPSDI) has been conferred upon the CBIP Award 2017 for Capacity Building and Training. TPSDI was chosen for this award for "Outstanding services to the Nation by providing state-of-art specialized Training with innovative approach to training and creating a pool of committed and competent professionals equipped with appropriate technical skills to steer the Indian Power Sector".

The award ceremony was held on December 29, 2016 at the SCOPE Complex, Lodhi Road, New Delhi.

The award was given away by Dr. Sanjeev Kumar Balyan, Hon'ble Minister of State for Water Resources, River Development and Ganga Rejuvenation. On behalf of TPSDI, the award was received by Mr. Ashok Sethi, COO and ED, Tata Power and Mr. C. N. Nagakumar, Chief - TPSDI. The award consisted of a plaque and a citation.

On the same day, as part of CBIP Day Celebrations, a Symposium on “Challenges in Development of Water Resources, Power & Renewable Energy Sectors” was organized at the venue. During the symposium, prominent speakers of national repute delivered the key note address about the development and challenges on the Water Resources, Power and Renewable Energy Sectors.

Earlier, in the month of September 2016, Mr. V. K. Kanjlia, Secretary, Central Board of Irrigation and Power (CBIP) had visited TPSDI - Shahad campus. Mr. Kanjlia had interacted with senior leaders of TPSDI and had also taken a tour of the training facility. Mr. Kanjlia was highly appreciative of TPSDI's training infrastructure and distinctive approach.

INNOVATION@TPSDI - HHAT

TPSDI had carried out an analysis of its learner profile which had revealed that roughly 18% of its trainees were illiterate, 13% were less than 8th pass, and 14% were less than 10th pass (Overall 45% were less than 10th pass). Furthermore, a study carried out by a reputed agency at a national level had pointed out that a significant percentage of those who were less than 10th pass could not even read Std. II level text.

This posed a significant barrier in efforts to assess the knowledge levels of the trainees before and after the programmes, as the paper and pen method was not viable for such cases.

To overcome this problem, TPSDI adopted a unique method for administering tests and collecting feedback from the trainees.

The Hand Held Assessment Tool (HHAT) is an Audience Response System, similar to one that was used in popular television show Kaun Banega Crorepati (KBC). It has been adapted for carrying out tests and surveys at TPSDI.

The learners are provided with a small and simple remote device, which captures their response and computes the results instantaneously.

The questions and options are read out to them either in Hindi or the Language that all trainees are most comfortable with.

Some of the main advantages and results of HHAT are:

Enables TPSDI to reach out to a large audience more effectively

Saves time and energy spent on manually organizing, checking and storing test responses

Faster TAT for results

Eliminates possibilities of manual error in correction

Eliminates possibilities of academic malpractice (cheating/copying)

Enables standardization of tests through analysis of responses/answers

Provides all the above benefits for the purpose of carrying out feedback surveys

Saves over 350 kgs of paper each year

More whole-hearted participation by trainees as the tool is extremely user friendly and less intimidating than traditional tests

Better utilization of Human Resources as it eliminates the laborious and time consumingpaper checking

In a tremendous show of ability, 68 TPSDI trainees bagged offers from Welspun India Limited (Textiles) in a recruitment drive conducted at TPSDI - Maithon on November 5, 2016. What makes this news truly incredible is that all 68 of 68 who appeared for the recruitment process got offered. Earlier, in the month of August, 21 out of 24 trainees who participated in a recruitment drive conducted by M/s Sterling and Wilson got offered.

TPSDI - Maithon became operational in March 2016 and has trained 134 freshers so far, of which 118 have been placed/offered - a success rate of 88%. No doubt, TPSDI - Maithon is the most sought after training center in the community around.

TPSDI strives to provide placement assistance to meritorious trainees wherever possible. All TPSDI courses are purposefully designed to be market driven and employment oriented. The Training Centers ensure a corporate friendly atmosphere in the campus, and proactively research and partner with organizations which can provide employment to the trainees.

Throughout the training process, trainees are provided continuous career counseling and mentoring to prepare them for recruitment situations. The soft skills module ensures all round development of the trainees. In addition, trainees are also given inputs on resume writing, time management and interview skills. Apart from classroom training, trainees are given extensive hands-on practical work, to help them get a foothold in the power and allied sectors.

Placement is gaining traction at all other centers as well and success stories are coming out of all training centers. Even Tata Power's contractors are coming forward and conducting recruitment events at the training centers.

To help TPSDI - Trainees to project their capabilities in the right manner before the prospective Employers, two initiatives have been taken

1. Helping them to construct proper CV reflecting their capabilities

2. Training them on" How to face Interviews"

TPSDI recognizes the importance of learning by doing and therefore places extra emphasis on practical hands-on training. Practical training is imparted to trainees at TPSDI through the well-equipped Labs and Workshops as well as through Project Work.

Project work is one the best learning experiences that a trainee can have and remember for a lifetime. The joy of creating something and seeing it come to life is truly unparalleled. In addition, project work also enhances other qualities like leadership, resource management, time-management, presentation skills and team work.

Project work is an excellent example of 'active learning' or 'enquiry' and is a very effective instructional method that ensures successful learning.

TPSDI tracks training effectiveness according to the Kirkpatrick's Four Level Evaluation Model. This enables TPSDI to ensure that impact evaluation system does not only focus on short term retention but is able to gauge long term ability to apply knowledge and improved performance.

The level 4 of TPSDI's impact evaluation focusses on the impact of training on the Business.

TPSDI recently concluded the Level 4 training impact survey for a select number of trainees who underwent training at TPSDI as long as a year back. The target respondents for the survey were Labour Contractors and the questions were focused on impact of the training on their business. Overall 10 contractors participated in the survey and gave feedback for 64 people in the trade skills - who underwent training at TPSDI.

TPSDI Chief Visits JWPTI Bhutan

In the month of December 2016, Chief - TPSDI, Mr. C. N. Nagakumar visited the Jigme Wangchuk Power Training Institute (JWPTI) Bhutan. The visit was at the invitation of Govt. of Bhutan for the purpose of taking forward the collaboration for operationalizing JWPTI.

TPSDI Organizes Entrepreneurship Training for Retired Tata Power Employees

From December 12 to 15, TPSDI organized Entrepreneurship Training for retired Tata Power employees as part of the Tata Power's HR initiatives for the benefit of its ex-employees. The training was delivered by Major Shashi Tiwari of TPSDI and was very well received.

This was done on a workshop mode and Mr. C N Nagakumar, Chief - TPSDI conducted the first day workshop to help the group to appreciate how the business entity gets shaped and the role of each member of the cooperative.

TPSDI Representatives meet Govt. of Maharashtra

On November 30, 2016, Mr. J. C. Mistry, Head - Training Services - TPSDI met Mr. Haribhau Bagade, speaker of Maharashtra Legislative Assembly at Vidhan Sabha to discuss possibilities of collaboration for training of underprivileged youth in remote areas of Maharashtra. The meeting was successful and has resulted in mobilization of over 600 youth in

the Latur district of Maharashtra.

TPSDI Mundra Organizes Contractors Meet

On December 1, 2016, TPSDI Mundra organized a Contractor's meet at its premises. Around 50 Contractors turned for this meeting. The meeting was graced by Mr. Shyam Choudhury, Head HR, CGPL and the IR team. Among the various topics discussed, prominent ones were - Safety training for Contractor Work Force at CGPL, skill training for contract workmen, and opportunities for campus

recruitment. The contractors gave positive feedback for their interactions with TPSDI Mundra.

O&M Supervisory Trainees finish their first trimester of OJT

In December 2016, the O&M Supervisory trainee's batch successfully completed the first trimester of on-the-job training (OJT) with various Departments of Tata Power at Mundra, Jojobera, Haldia and Kalinganagar. During the OJT, the trainees received hands-on learning under the guidance of their assigned mentors. At the end of the first trimester of the OJT, the trainees were assessed by teams having representation from TPSDI, HR and Operations departments as well as their mentors. During the second session of the OJT, the trainees will be rotated amongst the identified departments and locations. The trainees have commenced the second session of the OJT.

Neighborhood Electrician RPL and Training Launched

TPSDI launched the Neighborhood Electrician RPL (Recognition of Prior Learning) in the month of October 2016. This RPL will be jointly certified by TPSDI and the Indian Merchant's Chamber (IMC). The target audience for this course were people engaged in the unorganized sector and unemployed youth. The course received excellent reviews by the learners.

On December 19, 2016, the Prime Minister of Indian launched India's first 'Indian Institute of Skills' at Lucknow.

The Indian Institute of Skills (IIS) was conceptualized by the Prime Minister during his visit to the Singapore Institute of Technical Education.

The institute is being opened by the Skill Development Ministry in partnership with the Institute of Technical Education, Singapore.

The Ministry has decided to have six such institutes.

The IIS aims at making India the 'Skill Capital' of the World.
