Tracking Task Force

Predrag Buncic

Offline Week , 19 March 2014

• Need for Global Tracking Project/Task Force – some structure needs to be in place to put the tracking for

Run2 on track– tracking effort for Run 3 maybe a separate project– needs a review of current situation

• Task force with the mandate to assess the current situation, priorities for the immediate future and the long-term structure of global tracking (global PID)– P. Buncic to consider leading this effort

Conclusions of January MB retreat

• Discussion with experts– Ruben, Marian, Youri..

• Discussion with Physics coordination• Discussion with Karel• Two presentations and discussion in Offline– Offline Weekly• https://indico.cern.ch/event/291301/

– Computing Board• https://indico.cern.ch/event/302336/

Summary– Recently committed changes address PID issues in 2011 data

• QA plots show improvement in some variables but it would be better to assess real improvement on physics observables

• It is already clear that TPC needs to fix MC (discrepancy in the number of clusters as function of multiplicity

– For tackling 2010 data (and possibly 2011) additional changes are needed• Improve double track resolutions• Use TRD clusters in TPC tracks fit in order to improve high pt track resolution by

factor of 2 – Requires TPC-TRD alignment

– It is possible to speed up the TPC reconstruction by a factor 3-5• This is only 30% of total time spent in reconstruction and reconstruction is 10% of

all of ALICE CPU budget

What can we do within 6 month?

– If we want to be ready for Run2 (and allow for Run1 re-processing)• We must do all this with the best people we have in the Collaboration• We should involve some fresh manpower in order to enlarge expert base

with time

– Tracking is only one side of the problem• Long QA and manual calibration is an issue that really slows down things

– Software quality is another issue• needs to be constantly monitored

– Priorities for development must be set in coordination with Physics Board followed up• We need to know when to stop

Possible Tracking Task Force?

– Task Force Coordinator (Peter Hristov)– TPC local tracking and PID (Marian Ivanov + N.N)– TPC/TRD Alignment (Ruben Shahoyan + Iouri Belikov) – Software and calibration QA (Mikolaj Krzewicki ?)– CPU performance improvement group

• Additional effort (fresh manpower)• Continuously working on improving CPU performance• Enlarging the expert base

– Karel Safarik (wise man)– Offline representative, Physics Board representative

• We need to exploit the full power of JIRA • Support for software development• Project management and planning

• If it is not in JIRA, does not exist
