Tracy George 10
Short narrative of research, teaching and service interests My scholarly work has focused on translational projects in hematopathology derived from my clinical work as a diagnostic
hematopathologist. I have focused on research in myeloproliferative neoplasms, specifically mast cell disease, which I began
over 10 years ago. My investigative activities include ongoing participation in several large multi-institutional clinical trials.
While I am not typically the primary or senior author on manuscripts resulting from these trials, my contributions are
typically substantial and include participation in trial design, data gathering and analysis, authorship of sections of the
manuscript, participation in final review of the manuscript, and presentation of the work at national meetings.
After publishing a review on the pathology of the myeloproliferative diseases in 2003, I began to focus on this area,
subsequently publishing book chapters and articles. Clinically, I began to work closely with Dr. Gotlib, a Stanford
hematologist who treats patients with myeloproliferative neoplasms. I soon found myself diagnosing Dr. Gotlib’s more
difficult patients. One such patient had mast cell leukemia, a very rare myeloproliferative neoplasm with no known effective
treatment. Dr. Gotlib used a novel protein tyrosine kinase inhibitor, midostaurin, to treat this patient after recognizing that
this drug showed inhibition of a cell line with the D816V KIT mutation, a mutation characteristic of patients with mast cell
disease. Dr. Gotlib and I documented the first bone marrow response to this drug. This exciting work resulted in an
investigator-initiated trial of the drug in patients with aggressive mast cell disease, followed shortly by an international
clinical trial by Novartis. In diagnosing these rare patients with aggressive mast cell disease, I have become a world expert in
the diagnosis of mastocytosis. I have been fortunate to collaborate with Dr. Peter Horny (University of Munich), a well-
recognized world expert in mastocytosis; we published a review together on this subject in 2010 and I have been a coauthor
on publications on this topic in Blood, American Journal of Hematology, Best Practice & Research Clinical Haematology,
and Current Cancer Therapy Reviews. At that time, I also mentored medical student, then resident, Dr. Angela Arredondo
and we published a series of unusual cases of acute leukemia with mast cell features in the American Journal of Hematology.
I presented this work at the invitation of the leading scientific organization in mastocytosis, the European Competence
Network in Mastocytosis (ECNM), in Gdansk, Poland in 2009. In 2010, I presented additional work as part of an
international conference on “Standards and Standardization in Hematopathology in myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS): EU-
US initiative to standardize parameters of disease and diagnostics for practice and clinical trials in patients with MDS,” in
Vienna. Since that time, I presented at ECNM at The Nobel Form, Stockholm, Sweden in 2010 on “Myeloid proliferations
with eosinophilia and FGFR1 abnormalities,” another rare disease that also contains neoplastic mast cells. My trainee, Dr.
Arredondo, gave an oral presentation of our work on “CD30 expression in mastocytosis” at ECNM in 2011 in Istanbul,
Turkey; she also had a poster presentation that year at the annual meeting of the US and Canadian Academy of Pathology, the
leading group of academic pathologists in the world. This work has resulted in a clinical trial of an anti-CD30 therapy in
aggressive mast cell disease. I have published subsequent work in this area with multiple trainees, presented in national and
international meetings, resulting in several publications.
With respect to teaching, I enjoy teaching students and colleagues at all levels, from medical students to residents/fellows to
medical technologists to pathologists. Recently, I taught patients with mast cell disease at The Mastocytosis Society which
was a novel experience. At my previous institution, I codirected the Hematology section of Human Health & Diseases 223
for the School of Medicine for 7 years where we had the most successful medical student course of the second year of
medical school, using didactic lectures coupled with small group learning sessions. I incorporated digital whole slide imaging
into my lectures and received recognition for “Excellence in Teaching” for these activities in 2008, 2010, and 2011. More
recently, I have been involved in UNM’s Genetic and Neoplasia course being a small group tutor for 8 medical students, as
well as lecturing and leading larger group sections. For the pathology residency program, I was the Chair of the Clinical
Competency Committee, implementing the new ACGME milestones this past year. Our program evaluation committee
successfully implemented a resident-faculty retreat, an idea I championed. I am also the Hematopathology Fellowship
Director of UNM with 4 fellows, considered one of the top programs in the nation. Our program also successfully
implemented ACGME milestones, one year early, and I have focused our fellowship on research and quality improvement
projects for all fellows with our faculty. With respect to pathologists, I teach courses nationally at our pathology
organizations, including ASCP, CAP, and AACC; I received the CAP Lifetime Achievement Award in 2014. In 2015, I
chaired a national steering committee which implemented a new teaching curriculum and methods in myelodysplastic
syndrome; this was funded by an educational grant put forth by 3 non-profit groups (ASCP, ASH, the France Foundation).
Finally, I am the Division Chief of Hematopathology, where I lead a group of 7 faculty specializing in the diagnosis of
diseases of bone marrow and lymph nodes. In addition to diagnosing the patients of UNM, we run a large consultation
service to help other pathologists diagnose difficult cases. I am now the director for the Genetics and Cytometry Laboratories
at TriCore Reference Labs, all focused on testing necessary for hematopathology. I strive to maintain the high standards and
excellent quality our division provides, while also implementing test utilization to reduce unnecessary testing and initiate
appropriate lab testing for all of our patients.
