Laramie County Community Colleges student newspaper has been named one of three finalists for a national Pinnacle Award by the College Media Association. The winner will be announced at the 93rd annual Associated Collegiate Press (ACP)/CMA National College Media Convention in Philadelphia.

Wingspan is a finalist in the category of two-year less-than-weekly newspaper of the year. The other finalists are Pima Community College in Tucson and Santa Ana College in Los Angeles.

The Wingspan issues submitted for competition were Oct. 14, 2013, April 7, 2014, and April 28, 2014. Editors for those issues were Kasey M. Orr, Amanda Neely, Brooke A. Rogers and Daniel Martinez.

In addition, ACP has named Wingspan staffers as finalists in its na-tional contest competing with four-year universities for the Pacemaker, considered the Pulitzer Prize of the student press.

Ike Fredregill is a finalist in the editorial writing category for Without a Trace, concerning LCCCs elimination of Service Learning as a scholar-ship requirement, and in the environmental portrait category for a pho-tography of LCCC tutor Tanya Salih. The Wingspan staff is also a finalist in the informational graphics category for the history of the poppy distrib-uted by Veterans of Foreign Wars to support veterans.

Of all the artists to come to Laramie County Community Colleges Esther and John Clay Fine Arts Gallery, Kit Whites paintings will surely be one of the most interesting portraits ever to grace the walls of the exhibit room. White, a painter, critic and teacher at the Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, New York, and a Harvard graduate will showcase his art Oct. 22Nov. 20.

His paintings are mostly landscape, but not the traditional landscapes one would picture with a foreground, middle ground and background like mountains.

I like to think of my portraits as metaphorical landscapes, White said. When I began painting, I thought that land was a character unto itself. My paintings are pure abstraction.

Growing up on a farm in Virginia, he found nature had always been a big part of his life. His mother taught him as a boy to draw, and he initially attended college to be an architect. Instead, he spent most time in his art classes, so he then changed his major to art. But despite being an amazing artist, he said he loves to teach as well.

I enjoy teaching both grads and undergrads. I use my own work as an example for the students, White said.

Two years ago, White was invited by LCCC art instructor Matt West to lecture after West read Whites book 101 Things to Learn in Art School. White spent a full day with students, and this was a year in the making.

Im really looking forward to seeing the students and talking with them, White said. Ive been on this teaching venture for a while now, and Im glad to finish it.

Above all, White hopes people find a point of entry into some-thing bigger from his work.

I want to make someone stop and think, White said. I think abstract is greater than realism because it causes you to pause, instead of outright knowing what an object is. All elements of my paintings are surrogates of real things.

Kit White will lecture at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 22, in the Science Center, Room 121. Afterward at 8 p.m. a gallery open-ing and reception will be in the Esther and John Clay Fine Arts Gallery.

Abstract scenery: Kit Whites painting titled Party makes the viewer stop and think. Whites exhibition will be in the Esther and John Clay Fine Arts Gallery Oct. 22Nov. 20.

Its nature and technology at its best. From afar, our water treatment plant looks fairly typical. Yet, after wastewater passes through a complex system of filters and

scrubbers, hungry microbes go to work removing pollutants, oil, and other by-products from refinery water. Once these microscopic workhorses have digested remaining

impurities, tiny minnows check the waters purity. Its an impressive partnership with nature and responsibility we take quiet seriously - day after day, year after year.*

ANSWER: TuneupWord Of The Week - S is for

SABIf youre in the United States and youre sad enough, you might start to cry. You will start SOBBING. To SOB is to cry with convulsive catching of the breath. SOB, SOBS, SOBBED and SOBBING are all in the Scrabble Dictionary, of course. However, the Dictionary also says that SAB means sobbing - presumably in Scotland, and so we can use SAB, SABS, SABBED and SABBING. Just as a note of interest, SAB has a different meaning in England, where it is short for saboteur. In the 1980s, a backlash against foxhunting began, and SABS would sabotage the hunt.Word of the Week Provided by Barbara Peterson

What is thePower of the HERD?South High School has adopted the motto Power of the HERD as a reminder of what it means to be a South High Bison. The word HERD is an acronym for Honorable, Enthusiastic, Responsible, and Determined. Our staff and students strive to show Honor by displaying integrity and good moral character. Our school spirit demonstrates our Enthusiasm. Bison show Responsibility by doing what is right and expected. Our Determination is seen when we strive to achieve positive results despite obstacles. South High staff and students embody these four qualities inside our school and out in our community. Even though The Power of the HERD is our behavior expectation, it is so much more. The Power of the HERD shows that we are a school of learners, demonstrates pride in our community, and is a way to celebrate our unique and diverse population. We are The Power of the HERD. We are Bison!
