The traditional cultural elements of Satoyama-satoumi, such as agricultural practices and festivals, are vanishing in many regions as people’s lifestyle has changed. However, there are still some regions where people recognize the value of traditional culture and seek ways to preserve and hand it down to future generations. We will visit sites where Satoyama-Satoumi traditional culture has been preserved and is being used for regional development.

Maruyama-gumi , an act iv i ty group made up of mainly local residents, provides opportunities to learn about traditional customs and culture rooted in Noto so that people can enjoy, preserve and hand them down in their own way. The group reinterpreted the agricultural ritual “Aenokoto,” which was des ignated as a UNESCO intangible cultural asset, in the form of a ceremony that is open to the public. In 2014, they received the Biodiversity Action Award Japan* for their activities.

The entire community engages in rural development by using their farmhouses as guesthouses in an environment blessed with abundant nature . In houses featuring black roof tiles and white walls, which maintain the traditional townscape, guests are welcomed with dishes made from local ingredients such as edible wild plants, served on a small, traditional Wajima lacquerware table.

This landscape is very symbolic of Noto’s Satoyama and Satoumi, which have been designated as GIAHS (Globally Important Agricultural Heritage Systems). Over one thousand small rice paddies on the steep s lope facing the Sea of Japan form green geometr ical patterns. The terraced rice paddy owner system, which was established to preserve the beautiful landscape of terraced rice paddies and traditional rice farming, is highly evaluated. * Photo: Terraced rice paddies in summer

* The Biodiversity Action Award Japan was established in 2013 by the Japan Committee for the United Nations Decade on Biodiversity. Awards are given to groups and individuals who have contributed to the promotion of biodiversity in five categories; Act1 Eat (Eat locally produced seasonal foods.) Act2 Feel (Get more in touch with nature and animals by visiting botanical gardens and zoos.) Act3 Show (Try communicating nature’s beauty and expressing your appreciation with photographs, pictures, and writing.) Act4 Conserve (Participate in regional and national activities to protect the threads that connect living organisms and nature, people and culture.) Act5 Select (Choose products and services bearing eco-marks.)

“Kiriko festival” is the collective te rm fo r f e s t i va l s i n wh ich portable shrines accompanied by kiriko lantern floats, carried along the streets. Kiriko festivals, which demonstrate a sense of beauty and religious perspectives that are typically Japanese, were designated as the first Japanese Heritage last year. The festivals are performed in about 200 areas of the Noto peninsula during the summer and fall. Recently, college students from Ishikawa Prefecture and elsewhere in Japan have been participating in the festivals of depopulated areas to preserve their traditional culture.

This center offers various programs involving research and study of marine nature, marine education, and experiences in Tsukumo Bay including snorkeling, which allow people to become familiar with the sea and learn about it. During this tour, the activities of “green keepers” who are engaged in community development that involves l inking people, nature and the local community through activities for preservation of the akategani(Chiromantes haematocheir) that moves between forests and the sea will be presented.

A “Noto Satoyama Satoumi Lunch” made from local ingredients will be served. The rice named “hida-mai” accompanying the meal was cultivated using water from the ponds in the Kaminagao area of Noto Town.

“Aenokoto” is a typical Okunoto area folk tradition to pray for and thank the rice field deities who protect the rice harvest. Unlike oral traditions, it has been handed down through performances in the back rooms of farmhouses. Since it is secretive, people don’t know exactly how others perform the ceremony. Recently, the performances were disclosed to the public so that the ritual could be handed down to future generations. Aenokoto was designated as a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage in 2009.

An unique human resource development program is car r ied out at the “Noto Gakusha,” school on the tip of the Noto Peninsula, which is making use of a abolished school building. Since 2007, Kanazawa University has been introducing Noto Satoyama Satoumi, which was designated as a GIAHS, to the world, and developing human resources who will play an important role in solving regional problems, while emphasizing the importance of maintaining harmony with nature. The number of students who have completed this program reached 128 by fiscal years of 2015, and those students are now playing an active role in Noto, as well as in other regions all over Japan.

Sogen Sake Brewery is the oldest sake brewery in Noto, founded almost 250 years ago (in 1768). It is said this is the birthplace of Noto’s chief sake brewer who are ranked as one of the four best brewers in Japan. Sogen Sake Brewery, which uses local water and rice to make its sake, was awarded the Gold Prize by the Annual Japan Sake Awards 15 times. In recent years, they converted the tunnel of a abolished railway into a warehouse as one of their environmental measures, and made a sake time capsule for junior high school students to help vitalize the community.

In the Togi area of Shika Town, people’s livelihood has been based on fishing ever since the Jomon era.* People are passing down traditional environment-friendly fishing methods such as fixed-net fishing and fishing basket. Local residents are revitalizing the fishing industry through unique projects, such as the installation of a rotating sushi bar in the port.*Photo: Kishu Festival at Togi Port*Jomon era : time in prehistoric Japan from about 10,000BC to about 5th~4th century BC.

This kelp shop has a history of over 80 years. In the shop, not only limited in sales and new product development, dried sheets of seaweed are on display. The wife of the owner explains the important role that seaweed plays in the sea. You can learn about Noto’s Satoumi through seaweed.

A hanayome noren is a bridal custom that began at the end of the Edo and Meiji periods (19th century). On the occasion of a marriage, the curtain is hung at the entrance of the Buddhist altar room in the groom’s house, and the bride walks through it. However, once the wedding ceremony is finished, there is usually no opportunity to use the curtain again. Hanayome Noren Museum was established in the spring of 2016 to display hanayome noren (bridal curtains). In the permanent exhibition room, hanayome noren dating from the Meiji period to the present are on display.

Passengers can enjoy the landscape of Noto’s Satoyama and Satoumi through the windows of the train while listening to the explanation given by an attendant. Another attraction of the train is on-board exhibition of traditional crafts produced in Noto. A sushi lunch provided by Nobuzushi, a noted sushi restaurant in Wakura Onsen area, will be served in the train. You can spend a relaxing time while enjoying delicious sushi.

Anamizu Town is situated on the calm inland sea, where set-net mullet (Bora) fishing has been carried out since ancient times. This is a slow fishing method; when a watcher on the scaffold sees school of mullets swimming into the net, the net is taken up. There were about 40 watchtowers at the peak of this fishing method, but the last one disappeared in 1996. The fishing method was revived by local residents in 2013.

Noto Jo fu i s a handwoven hemp tex t i l e characterized with fine kasuri patterns. Legend says that it originated when a daughter of Emperor Sujin transmitted the weaving technique to this area around 2,000 years ago. In the early Showa period*, the production volume was the highest among all hemp textiles in Japan; however, there is now only one manufacturer of the textile left, located in Hakui. The Noto Jofu Center was opened in 1996 to preserve and pass down the weaving techniques. Noto Jofu has been designated as an intangible cultural asset of Ishikawa Prefecture.*Showa period : 1926-1989

This restaurant serves traditional dishes with local seasonal ingredients. Rich flavors and a refined serving style can be enjoyed in a relaxed atmosphere.

Natural farming is an agricultural method that does not involve the use of agrichemicals, herbicides or chemical fertilizers. It is an environmentally friendly type of agriculture designed to coexist with microorganisms, insects and small animals, and make use of the natural ecosystem. Hakui City and JA* Hakui are seeking agricultural practices for the future; they are jointly engaged in the development of natural farming with the aim of making Hakui City a center of natural agricultural practices.*JA stands for Japan Agricultural Cooperatives

The production of kuzu, or arrowroot powder, started in Hodatsu around 450 years ago. At the time, it was used as a herbal medicine for miners working in the harsh environment of the Mt. Hodatsu gold mine. Production flourished in the Meiji period, and the kuzu from Hodatsu was presented to the crown prince, who later became Emperor Taisho. There are now only six producers, and they make kuzu powder in the Hodatsu Kuzu Center, which was constructed by the town in 1998 to preserve the traditional production technique.

This is the only beach in Japan where you can drive right along the water’s edge (distance: 8 km). The unique sand of Chirihama makes this possible. Because the sand particles are very small, and have a uniform, angular shape, the beach driveway hardens when it absorbs water.*You may not be able to drive on the beach in bad weather.
