Arcade, Leigh pottery, bracelet, discharged Q: I have an old metal iron squeezer identified as being “The Arcade No. 2.” — Cathy, Amarillo, Texas A: The Arcade Manu- facturing Company of Freeport, Ill., made lem- on squeezers during the early years of the past century. The No. 2 is val- ued at about $15. A good reference is “300 Years of Kitchen Collectibles” by Linda Campbell Franklin (Krause, $29.95). Q: I have a bracelet that is identified as be- ing “Big Sister’s Birthday Bracelet,” probably from the 1940s. I am enclosing a picture of it in its pack- ing box. Any idea of its value? — Jim, Sackville, N.B., Canada A: What you have is a radio premium. “Big Sis- ter” was a daytime radio drama sponsored by Rinso Soup that aired on the CBS network from 1936 until 1952. The series featured Alice Frost in the title role. The storyline was set in the fictional town of Glen Falls and revolved around Ruth Evans and the sac- rifices she made for her younger sister, Sue, and crippled brother, Neddie. Your bracelet is probably worth about $20, perhaps a little more since it is in the original mailing box. Q: I inherited a set of dishes from my grand- mother, and I would like to know the value and where I might take it to sell. It is Leigh Ware. — Wilfred, Albuquerque, N.M. A: The Leigh Pottery Company was started in 1926 in Alliance, Ohio, and continued until the early 1930s. Even though there is some dispute about ex- actly when the company folded, Lois Lehner, author of “Lehner’s Encyclopedia of U.S. Marks on Pottery, Porcelain & Clay” claims production ended in 1931. If you wish to know the value of your china, I rec- ommend a good appraiser. You have several that are certified in Albuquerque, including Suzanne Staley, www.suzannestaley.com, and 888-758-1118. To sell your china, you might show your set to antiques dealers in your area. Q: I have U.S. Navy honorable discharge pa- pers from World War II. I would like to sell them. — Sheila, Palm Coast, Fla. A: Discharge papers from WWII are fairly com- mon and generally sell in the $10 to $20 range, de- pending on condition and any supporting documen- tation. By LARRY COX King Features Humble Thanks “Thank you” is such an inadequate way to let all of you know how much we appreci- ate the love and support you have shown our family during this time. It seems like you have always been there for us, even back in 1996 when our garden center burned. We were overwhelmed at the out- pouring of love and support at that time. When Jewell had the wreck, in 2002, we were amazed and swept off of our feet, at the love and support. Now, at this time, YOU HAVE DONE IT AGAIN!!! We are so proud and thankful to live in, and be a part of a community that is so caring.
