CustomizedTraffic Wear



CSA Z96-15 is a standard that specifies the minimum requirements for apparel used for high-visibility purpo-

ses in the work environment. The clothing must be able to signal the presence of the user visually. It is also

intended to provide conspicuity in hazardous situations specially in low-light conditions. The performance

requirements of the garment include the color of the clothing, its retro-reflectivity, the minimum area it covers

on the body, and its configuration.

CSA Z96-15 puts high-visibility safety apparel into three classes that are specified according to the body

coverage that is provided.

Class 1: is a basic harness with stripes of retroreflective material (or combination of retroreflective

stripes with background material) coming over the shoulders forming two parallel lines in the front and

a symmetric X shape in the back and encircling the waist (360º).

Class 2: has a background material that covers the full upper torso (front, back, sides and over the

shoulders). It must have retroreflective stripes coming over the shoulders forming two parallel lines in

the front and a symmetric X shape in the back and encircling the waist (360º).

Class 3: is a Class 2 apparel with the addition of retroreflective stripes encircling both arms and both

legs (at/or below the knees).

In addition to specifying the performance for both background material and retroreflective stripes,

CSA Z96-15 confirms that:

Background material must be made of bright or fluorescent colors (yellow/green, orange/red or red).

Retroreflective stripes must:

• Be 5 cm wide minimum

• Have a contrasting color to that of the background material

• Be placed at least 5 cm from the edge or from another stripe

CSA Z96-15 allows the addition of optional patches and lettering for identification or personalization purposes:

If non-retroreflective patches or lettering are used, they must not cover more than 105 cm².

• A maximum of 25 cm² on the front of the garment

• Must not cover the retroreflective stripes on the back

If retroreflective patches or lettering are used, they must not cover more than 500 cm².

• Additionally, they must not affect the recognizable pattern of the garment’s retroreflective stripes
