British Columbians head to the polls today for the 40th provincial election.

And in keeping with trad-ition, will the student vote once again parallel the gen-eral vote in our local riding?

On Monday, almost 750 students at J.L. Crowe S e c o n d a r y cast their ballots in a mock elec-tion for the official candidates in their rid-ing as part of Student Vote B.C.

Elementary students in Rossland, Fruitvale, Salmo and Glenmerry also took the opportunity to experi-ence the democratic process firsthand, in an authentic in-school vote.

However, the results will be kept under lock and key until Wednesday to ensure that they do not sway the election.

“The Student Vote results are kept a secret until the general election polls close,” said Kate Fane, organizer for Student Vote BC.

“Although we do hope that children participation inspires the parents to vote as well.”

Patrick Audet, principal at Glenmerry Elementary, said the school has been part of the program four times, and the results always prove interesting.

“I am curious if the stu-dent votes will parallel the actual voting results,” he said.

“I predict that on Wednesday morning the trend of the Glenmerry stu-dents will be quite accurate to what actually happens in our Kootenay West riding.”

According to the Elections BC website, advance voting, which began last Wednesday, saw just over 2,000 resi-dents cast their votes in the Kootenay West riding.

That figure reflects around six per cent of the over 31,000 regis-tered voters in the district.

On Monday, the candi-dates spread out across the riding to campaign and encourage the

voting public to cast a ballot today.

“We’re getting ready for E-Day tomorrow,” Katrine Conroy told the Castlegar News.

“We’re going to support-ers houses who are help-ing us with getting out the vote.”

Independent Joseph Hughes drew his campaign to a close in Greater Trail.

BC Liberal candidate Jim Postnikoff, split time between Castlegar and Trail on Monday, although his election day schedule was uncertain, campaign man-ager, Jesse Postnikoff told the News.

Voting places are open from 8 a.m. until 8 p.m.

In Trail, cast a ballot at the Memorial Centre, Trail Middle School or Glenmerry Elementary.

In Rossland, at the Legion, or in the commun-ity halls of Genelle, Oasis, Warfield, Montrose and Fruitvale.

The 50th anniversary of Silver City Days was greeted by warm temperatures and enthusi-astic crowds, which filled Trail’s downtown core on Saturday and enjoyed a day at the park on Sunday. Saturday, people lined the streets for the annual parade and were treat-ed to the usual flips and follies of the midway before capping off the day with an impressive fireworks display at Gyro Park. The park was the setting for Sunday’s Family Day , which featured entertainment and food for every-one. For more photos visit www.traildaily-times.ca or our Facebook page.

FROM PAGE 1On the beat, Sergeant Rob

Hawton of the Greater Trail and District detachment said things were relatively peaceful over the weekend.

“I haven’t gone through any stats, but in speaking with the members working Silver City Days, the overall impression was that there were fewer problems this year with alcohol and drugs than in past years.

“From a policing standpoint, it seems to have gone over quite well.  We had extra people on duty, with high visibility, and the crowd seemed a little more family ori-ented than previously.

The soaring temperatures sent many fairgoers into the Cominco Arena seeking cooler conditions fol-lowing the parade.

However, Tom Gawryletz, presi-dent of the Trail Smoke Eaters, said the Italian Sidewalk Cafe didn’t

attract large numbers.“I don’t think we had the crowd

like we had last year,” said Smokies president Tom Gawryletz.

He added many of the patrons headed back out into the sunshine by about 3 p.m.

There were lengthy lineups for tickets and rides as crowds descend-ed on the West Coast Amusements midway and as the afternoon wore on shady spots were at a premium and possibly the busiest vendor in the food mall was the Hawaiian Shaved Ice trailer.

The evening’s fireworks display attracted a large gathering at Gyro Park and the pyrotechnic experts didn’t disappoint as the booming display echoed down the valley.

Sunday’s brief respite from the heat allowed a large group of run-ners to tackle the 5km and 10km events before settling down to an afternoon of music and fun in Gyro Park.

There’s nothing like a flat stomach.

And the City of Rossland flat-tened its stomach as it tightened its belt a notch and delivered a “net zero” effect to city property taxes for the coming year.

Council passed Financial Plan Bylaw 2013-2017 Wednesday morning in council chambers, reducing its fiscal household costs despite battling rises across the board on the price of doing municipal business.

The city will stay flat for taxa-tion revenue in the new tax year, said city chief operating officer Cecile Arnott, but whether each Rosslander’s property taxes go up or down will be reflected in any value change made by BC Assessment.

To ensure that property tax revenue was consistent with 2012 before non market changes—new buildings, renovations and improvements—Arnott said since the assessed property values over-all declined by 3.8 per cent, the municipal tax rates will actually increase by 3.7 per cent.

“Although (taxation revenue) does stay flat compared to last year, the non market changes will be levied and transferred to reserve,” she said.

The non market change will

give the City a taxation revenue increase of $30,000.

Council crafted a 2.7 per cent decrease overall to its $6.4 mil-lion operating budget and gave the bylaw three readings and adoption this week.

City staff had originally rec-ommended a two per cent tax increase, but council wanted taxa-tion “flattened,” to help ease the blow of the increases the city’s residents have been hit with in recent years—some at the city’s behest—and an expected 3.5 per cent tax requisition rise com-ing from the West Kootenay-Boundary Regional Hospital District Regional and the District of Kootenay Boundary (RDKB) to Rosslanders.

The RDKB’s requisition is actually down by 1.3 per cent. However, the hospital requisition is up by 44.6 per cent, creating around a $13 rise in taxes per year for the average homeowner.

“The intent was to do the best we can with maintaining services and freeing up a little money from community groups,” said Mayor Greg Granstrom.

“We looked hard at all of our expenditures and, in order to move forward, we are looking at some more public consulta-tion (for next year) and see what people think of where we should go.”

More than three years after closing to the public, the Cody Caves are set to reopen next month with a new business model emphasizing what the new operator calls the “caving experience.”

BC Parks has awarded vet-eran caver Lee Hollis of South Slocan a 10-year permit to run a commercial guiding service in the provincial park north of

Ainsworth.Tours haven’t been offered

since the fall of 2009 when the former operator said he couldn’t afford to run them due to fees imposed through his operating permit. However, Hollis said in an interview he hopes to avoid the same pitfalls by running tours on a tele-phone booking system.

Previously guides met spe-lunkers at the cave’s mouth for hourly tours, but now reserva-

tions will be required for one of three different tours.

An hour-long family tour will be available on holiday weekends  between June and September for $25 per child and $35 per adult with a min-imum group of four and max-imum of 10 to 12 depending on the ages involved.

The explorer tour is available seven days a week at $85 per person with a minimum of four and maximum of eight.

Cody Caves scheduled to re-open in June

Despite a shrink-

ing gap between the leading NDP and the BC Liberals in recent

polls, a provincial elec-tion prediction market points to a substantial NDP majority govern-ment.

UBC’s Sauder School of Business Prediction Markets – where traders win or lose money depending on the accuracy of their predictions –  gave the NDP 42.9 per cent of the popu-lar vote as of Monday morning, versus 38.2 per cent for the B.C. Liberals, 9.8 per cent for the Greens, seven per cent for the B.C. Conservatives and 2.1 per cent for others.

The UBC market predicts the outcome will be a big 20-seat majority – 51 New Democrats to 31 B.C.

Liberals, with just one Green and two others elected.

Another election prediction site, three-hundredeight .com, gave the NDP an eight-point popular vote advantage in a May 10 update.

It predicts between 45 and 56 seats for the NDP – more than the 43 needed for a major-ity – and 26 to 40 seats for the B.C. Liberals, with no Greens or B.C. Conservatives elected, and between zero and four seats going to others.

The UBC Sauder market suggests an 89 per cent chance of an NDP majority, verus 6.7 per cent chance of a Liberal majority and

a 4.3 per cent chance of another outcome – a minority government for either party.

Its findings are based on the current prices participating traders are willing to pay for various con-tracts that pay out based on the final elec-tion results.

An Ipsos Reid poll taken last Wednesday and Thursday gave the NDP 43 per cent of the vote to 37 per cent for the B.C. Liberals.

That six-point gap between the NDP and Liberals is down from 19 points at the start of the campaign, with most of the Liberals’ gain coming from the B.C. Conservatives, not the NDP.

ASHCROFT, B.C. - Residents living in a rural area of B.C.’s southern interior, between Ashcroft and Kamloops, have been ordered to get out of the path of a raging wildfire.

An evacuation order was issued Sunday night for properties in the area known as Blue Sky Country, just east of Ashcroft, although the village of Ashcroft is not affected.

The Thompson-Nicola Regional District issued the evacuation order for properties from the north tip of Barnes Lake, west to the Thompson River, south to Basque and east to Highway 97.

The order to get out came as high winds fanned the two-week-old Spatsum Creek blaze, which had charred an estimated 11 square kilometres by late Sunday night - an increase of more than two square kilo-metres within hours.

One structure was destroyed early Sunday but fire officials say the flames are moving in a northeast direction, away from homes and toward Highway 97C.

Thirty-five firefighters worked through the night to protect properties closest to the flames and additional crews backed by heavy machinery, air tankers and five heli-copters dropping retardant are expected to resume work on the human-caused fire at first light.

T H e N e l S o N S T a RKaslo residents have endorsed

a $1.6 million loan to build a new fire hall and turn their municipal fire department over to the Regional District of Central Kootenay.

Unofficial results from Saturday’s referendum saw 456 residents vote yes and 242 vote no. Voter turnout was 64 per cent. The result means an annual tax bill of up to $284,000. The price tag included with the hall includes $400,000 to pay off existing debt from equipment purchases.

Regional fire chief Terry Swan suggested the final cost could be lower depending on volunteer labour and community sponsorships.

A separate referendum to enshrine fire protection for Ainsworth and Woodbury using the

existing Balfour-Harrop and Kaslo departments also passed resound-ingly, 57 to 8. That represented a 67 per cent voter turnout.

Residents will pay up to $24,000 to formalize a service that has been provided on a contract basis the last two years.

The new hall is expected to be built next to the arena and have enough room to accommodate all emergency responders in Kaslo, including ambulance and search and rescue.

Rural Kaslo regional director Andy Shadrack, who spent four days last week going door-to-door encouraging constituents to vote, called the outcome “a huge step forward” and said he was “looking forward to the new era.”

Although two years ago she called it a fantas-tic facility, Kamloops-Thompson-Cariboo MP Cathy McLeod said she understands why the federal agriculture-research centre in Kamloops must be shut down.

The centre, a fixture in the city’s agriculture sector for almost eight decades, will be closed in the fall and the 14 staff there have been laid off.

Bob Jackson, regional executive vice-presi-dent with the Public Service Alliance of Canada, which represents nine of the 14 staff, said the likelihood of finding another federal-sector job in Kamloops is unlikely.

McLeod, who praised the facility in 2011 when it was also facing closure, but refocused and renamed the Grassland Applied Technology Centre, said the building and its labs are first-rate and might find another use.

When asked if that meant the building could be sold, McLeod said an intensive analysis would be done, other stakeholders consulted and a decision will be made.

The Conservative backbencher said she is disappointed at the decision, one of many lay-offs and closures announced nationally this week, but said the Growing Forward 2 program will help fill the gap.

Jackson said the federal government wants out of doing scientific research,

“They don’t believe in it,” he said.“It’s a sad tragedy, it really is.”McLeod said she was told no research has

been undertaken at the centre since 2011; however, Lauchlan Fraser, a science professor at Thompson Rivers University, said TRU has worked in partnership with the researchers at the centre for some time.

“It’s a shame,” Fraser said. “We have such a long history of excellent research coming out of that station.”

KING (NEE LENNARD), AUDREY LOIS — passed away peacefully in Trail, BC on May 5, 2013 sur-rounded with love by her family. Born in Revelstoke on August 14, 1932, Audrey was pre-deceased by her father Oscar Adolf, her mother, Minnie Leo-nora and her brother Stanley.

Audrey’s grandsons, Jared Butcher (daugh-ter Linda) and Matthew and Corey King (son Bill) were her pride and joy, and she loved them dearly. Audrey will be missed by her many nieces and nephews, from Vancouver Island to Medicine Hat, all of whom brought her much happiness through her life.

As a young girl Audrey was busy with basketball, gymnastics, lots of friends and music. At home Audrey loved to play the piano for her family and friends, often ac-companied by her dad on accordion. In 1952, she met a young lad named Bill and they soon were singing sweet harmonies. Audrey and Bill were married on October 10, 1953 and proudly called Revelstoke home until they moved to Fruitvale in February, 2009.

A graveside service for family and friends will be held at 11:00 am on Wed-nesday, July 3, 2013 at the columbarium in the Mountain View Cemetery in Revel-stoke. A tea will follow in the basement of the United Church.

HAVER (HURD), SHEOLA — 1927-2013

It is with great sadness we announce the passing of Sheola, our much loved wife, mother and grandmother who passed away peacefully at her home surrounded by her family in Trail on April 29th, 2013 at the age of 85. She will be greatly missed and lovingly remembered by her husband Burc, sons John (Annette), Greag (Lori), Harvie (Tracy), her grandchildren, John, Daryle, Jaime, Kelssay, Ashleigh and Cody.

Sheola was born in Rossland, Aug. 27th 1927. Mom married John Richard (Dick) Hurd and They spent 31 years together devoting their time to building their home in Montrose and raising their three sons. Sadly Dick passed away long before his time. On June 25, 1988 Sheola mar-ried Burc Haver. Sheola always felt lucky to have found love twice. They spent their time gardening, visiting family and friends and traveling the world. Together they created an award winning garden.

Sheola was a loving, caring, genuine person who loved to laugh and could carry on a good conversation as well as tell a good story. Sheola loved life...her favor-ite saying was “Life is good” and at every family gathering she would propose a toast to this. Her endless love for the outdoors and connection with family created many fond memories, gardening, camping, hik-ing and cheering on her grandchildren’s MANY sporting events. As in life, Sheola was an inspiration to us all. During her year long battle with cancer she always

maintained a digni ed and positive out-look. In the face of death she approached each day with a positive attitude and a smile. She showed us all not just how to live but how to die with dignity. How we will miss her is indescribable, for to know her, was to love her. Sheola, Mom, Grand-ma we Love you, we miss you.

A Celebration of Life in Memory of

John passed away at KLH on Feb. 12, 2013 at the age of 84 years

FROM PAGE 1After a whirlwind

weekend leading the 50th Silver City Days celebrations, Friess is looking forward to her next duty as Miss Trail, which is to attend a “Little Miss” pageant in New Denver this weekend.

Emily Dawson was recognized for her writing, speaking and talent achievements with the History Award sponsored by the Trail Historical Society, Knights of Pythias Speech Award for her “Leadership” essay and Benson Oil Talent Award for a highland dance routine.

“I have always loved travelling B.C. and meeting new people, so I am really excited,”

she said.Miss Kiwanis Club,

Rebecca King was recognized for her

personal growth and potential when she received the Blossom Award, and the Olive Morey “Perseverance” Award for adhering to exceptional commit-ment in the face of adversity.

Friday night’s pro-gram showcased sev-eral unique talents and highlighted each can-didates’s hard work, dedication and passion for their community.

“Every year I look forward to the pageant,” said Trail Mayor Dieter Bogs.

“I meet the girls early in the year and am always so impressed by how much they learn

and their fantastic dis-play of talents in the show.”

A large crowd gath-ered in Charles Bailey Theatre to watch the pageant, which opened with the much antici-pated presentation of past royalty.

Twenty-seven past queens, beginning from 1951 to 2011, appeared on the stage to give a royal wave to the crowd, and receive a bouquet of flowers, and small token of thanks from Mayor Bogs.

“I cannot thank enough all the queens who came back to Trail for this very special

event to mark the 50th anniversary of Silver City Days.”

Councillor and committee member, Eleanor Gattafoni-Robinson said the pageant lead to a week-end of memories that she will never forget.

“It was beautiful to see how, by bring-ing all these girls back together, rekindled lost friendships,” she said.

“And they all asked me, ‘When can we come back and do this again?’”

OPINION

Things you can’t say during an electionAnother election

campaign has come and gone, with the ritual posturing of

political parties and most news media searching for anything they can portray as a conflict.

Now comes the time to wonder why not enough people cared, or informed themselves about the real problems of running this $40 billion corporation called the B.C. govern-ment.

Why would they, when the whole thing is pre-sented as a combination of beauty contest and sports event, with endless discus-sion of polls and “attack ads” and who’s ahead and what’s the score?

Again we have seen the truth of former prime minister Kim Campbell’s observation that elections are no time to talk about serious issues. Indeed, there are some things you can’t speak of at all.

Peace River North MLA Pat Pimm caused a stir at

a candidates’ debate when he referred to constitu-ents’ concerns that dis-abled children can cause difficulties in classrooms.

He didn’t say class-rooms should be segre-gated, although that’s a discussion worth having. He didn’t deny the need for more support for spe-cial needs kids. But his opponents immediately portrayed it that way, and media seized on the con-flict despite the factual inaccuracy.

West Vancouver-Capilano MLA Ralph Sultan had a similar experience when he referred to his study of poverty in that affluent area. He noted that there was a high correlation between single parent-hood and kids in poverty. Picking on single mums, his detractors exclaimed, and that’s what got reported.

The B.C. Conservatives kicked their Boundary-Similkameen candidate

out of the party because he wrote an article saying women shouldn’t choose to be single mothers.

You can talk about child poverty, as long as you only discuss it based on federal statistics that do not measure poverty. Christy Clark started doing this as soon as she became B.C. Liberal lead-er, one of several issues where she dispensed with the facts and tried to copy a popular NDP stance instead.

She was all about fam-ilies, which can of course

be single people, single parents or pretty well any-thing you want them to be.

In fact the decline of the traditional family and the abdication of respon-sibility by many parents, fathers in particular, are central factors in the problem of poor and neg-lected children. But you can’t talk about that, at least not during elections.

Whole areas of political discussion have devolved into euphemisms that are chosen because they can’t be defined.

Everybody’s in favour of “affordable housing,” for instance. What they won’t admit is that this is code for subsidized hous-ing, because then they would have to talk about how much the subsidy is, and who has to pay for it.

Good grief, that might raise the question of whether the state should be taking money away from some people and giv-ing it to others so they can

live where they otherwise couldn’t afford to live.

We even have rules pre-venting the media from reporting polls on elec-tion day. People might be influenced by this, you see. If you tell them Party X is far ahead, they might stay home and mow the lawn instead.

If you tell them some-one is making a come-back, they might change their vote because they want to be on the winning side, or the one that has “momentum.” Just like any other sport.

The news media are steadily losing influence with the public. There are many factors involved, including the vast array of information sources that are available at most people’s fingertips.

Another factor is treat-ing the public like they’re idiots.

Climate change skeptics like to say that the only evidence we have to support claims of human-caused climate change lies in (faulty) computer mod-els.

In fact the evidence is a cas-cade of findings from differ-ent sources of which computer models are only one piece, all of which seems to agree.

I was reminded of this today when I read an article in the journal “Science” that described a multi-year effort by a team of researchers to drill out a core sample from the sediment below a tiny Russian lake 100 km north of the Arctic

circle. The unpronounceable Lake El'gygytgyn is unique because it was never covered by glaciers, so the sediment below lake bottom is an accurate rec-ord of what was deposited on the lake stretching back to 3.6 million years ago.

This takes us back to the mid-Pliocene, when concentra-tions of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere were between 380 and 450 parts per million. By comparison, last month the world celebrated the dubious achievement of topping 400, and rising.

What the researchers found, among other things, was evi-

dence of a completely ice-free Arctic, with pollen deposits from five different kinds of pine trees and other warm and wet-loving plants.

Bottom line: we probably won’t be seeing arctic forests and massive sea-level rise in our lifetimes – the Arctic is a big chunk of ice that will take a long time to melt – but we seem to be on the road to get there. That message comes to us not from a computer model of global climate, but courtesy of a very old hunk of Russian dirt.

Now that the initial frenzy seems to have subsided some, perhaps we can talk about this issue.

Why was the bylaw passed, after having the spikes installed on the bridge to eliminated the “threat from above?”

While feeding them one day, a passerby remarked, “I hate pigeons!”

Fair enough, but that would have to be something for Sigmund Freud to deal with, surely not the reason for pass-ing this bylaw.

On April 30, the City of Trail put out a “Request for Proposal- Pigeon Control Services”.

Some reasons are spelled out in it as to why these meas-ure are deemed to be necessary.

The background informa-tion provided with the proposal starts out with; “The City of Trail has an issue with an over-abundant pigeon population which is causing concern from the perspective of the human health risk as well as environ-mental issues and damage to public and private property.”

Who decided that we have “... an overabundant pigeon population”, based on what? What would be an acceptable

number of pigeons? As is, it is made clear that not one will be allowed to live, this is therefore just window dressing.

As for the “... concern from the perspective of the human health risk”, very careful word-ing by the way, we have this, and admittedly not from an unbiased source but they do rely on good data: “The Disease Myth: The most widespread misconception about urban pigeons is that they are car-riers of disease. Pest-control companies charge them with transmitting any number of diseases, but the truth is that the vast majority of people are at little or no health risk from pigeons. http://www.peta.org/issues/Wildlife/pigeons-ami-able-urbanites.aspx

The question that needs to be asked is: How many of Trail residents have become sick because of the pigeons?

As for “... environmental issues and damage to public and private property”, I have no idea what environmental issues could result from keeping them alive and fed.

Nothing really convincing that I can see, I therefore sus-pect that squeaky wheels (all

five of them, including the spare?) were greased. And that does not sit well with me.

The flock has not increased appreciably over the years.

We also feed songbirds and they reward us with their songs all year round, especially now in spring.

The city has many appealing features, fact is, we are sitting right in the middle of nature, if you will. Birds are part of this, pigeons should be and feeding them should not be punished.

Right now, in the summer, it is not that much of an issue, they might find some food. But come winter they will starve, it would therefore be more humane to kill them if this bylaw is allowed to stand.

I would like council to con-sider alternatives, a place where they can be fed, for instance. But by hoping for nature to take its course ie. “humanely” starving them to death, they are taking the cowardly way out.

Shoot them or allow us to feed them, but before you kill them, try and involve all the citizens, ask for their input.

An editorial from the Toronto Star

Prime Minister Stephen Harper and his hyper-aggres-sive natural resources minister Joe Oliver are rapidly turning doubt about Canada’s bitumen into bitter opposition.

Oliver, who travelled to Europe this past week to pro-mote Alberta’s heavy oil, ended up alienating his hosts and pro-voking a trade spat by vowing to take the European Union to court if imposes an import tax on Canada’s “dirty oil.”

Back home, the two men have stirred up so much ill-will in British Columbia by demon-izing “radical environmental groups” and cutting short pub-lic hearings that they have all

but killed the chances of get-ting Alberta’s oil to the Pacific.

In Edmonton, Premier Alison Redford, struggling to find a market for her province’s landlocked oil, has resorted to a level of deficit spending that has shocked Albertans and sent her public support plum-meting.

Watching Canada’s descent from “energy superpower” to a stubborn peddler of environ-mentally damaging fossil fuel has been like witnessing a slow-motion train wreck. Yet the government refuses to rec-ognize the damage it has done, much less change its strategy.

It has become clear to every-one - except the prime minis-ter, apparently - that lecturing

potential buyers while spewing increasing amounts of carbon into the atmosphere is not going to work.

But the Harper govern-ment’s refusal to ratchet down its rhetoric has overshadowed promising environmental developments in the oilsands.

It is clear Canada cannot sell its bitumen to a wary world without an attitude change and a course shift. The longer the prime minister and his senior ministers remain in denial, the more difficult it will be for Alberta to export its bitumen and become a source of nation-al economic strength.

This is no longer an ideo-logical issue. It is a simple mat-ter of common sense.

Canada’s energy pitch needs rethinking

The Silver City Days Fun Run saw almost 270 runners and walkers partici-pate in the annual event at Gyro Park Sunday. The top finishers including 5-km women’s winner Alexandria Masse (bib 496 above) get off to a good start, while multiple 5K winner Mike Zahn crosses the finish line retaining his title for yet another year. Graham Cocksedge and Jen Johnson, first-time 10-K winners (right), were all smiles after the event, while Celgar’s Fiona McKay accepts the corporate challenge award from Graham Wilson (left), as the young and young-at-heart stroll to the finish.

B y J i m B a i l e yTimes Sports Editor

There were a lot of firsts on Sunday as close to 270 runners and walkers partici-pated in the annual Silver City Days Fun Run at Gyro Park.

Three of the four overall winners at the Fun Run were first-time participants including Graham Cocksedge, who ran away with top-prize in the Men’s 10-kilo-metre run in a record time of 34 minutes and 25 seconds. His time beat Cranbrook resident Ryan Cain’s 2011 record mark of 35:13.

It was the Powell River native’s first Silver City Days Fun Run, and while Cocksedge doesn’t train as hard as he did when he ran for the UVic and national team just under a decade ago, he says he still thrives on competing.

“Now I’m just getting back into it, and running is a passion,” said Cocksedge. “I love competing whether it’s a recreational fun race or anything where there’s some cycling or adventure, individual pursuit competition, and at this point it’s compe-tition for fun, where before it was a little more serious and stressful, now it’s just enjoyable.”

SD 20’s Michael Hendriks came second overall with at time of 37:04, while former Black Jack skier Geoffrey Richards crossed the finish line in 40:29.

Trail’s Jen Johnson also won her first Fun Run taking the women’s 10K in a time of 47:47.

“This is my first win,” said Johnson. “I’m just getting into it a bit more, we just got back from Bloomsday Run last week-end and that was fun . . . trying to get the family involved.”

Rossland’s Andrea McCormick had the second best women’s time, 49:04, while Melanie Miles of Winlaw finished third overall in the 10K with a time of 49:33.

It was cloudy and cool, but the rain held off making it a perfect day for the event and organizer Dan Horan was pleased with the turnout,

“We had 268 registered so it’s almost the exactly the same as last year,” said Horan who also gave a shout out to all the sponsors, particularly to Gerick’s Cycle’s whose early registration draw for a $200 gift certificate added a little incentive for runners to register early.

Mike Zahn who is just recovering from a leg operation, re-repeated as the 5K

winner, having won the run multiple

times. “My times getting a little worse

though,” said Zahn, whose time of 19:05 was about 30 seconds behind his winning run last year. “But I am quite pleased, considering the circumstances it turned out okay.”

Zahn has a unique training regimen that continues to serve him well in his only race of the season.

“Just running to work and back. The time efficiency has maxed out, so if I had more time I’d probably train for the 10 K but it takes that much more time, couldn’t commit myself to that much.”

Donovan Brown had the next best run finishing in 20:29, while Nelson runner Chauncey Blair’s time of 21:34 was good enough for third.

Another first-time Fun Runner, Rossland’s Aaron Finke, 13, won the 12-15 age group in an astonishing 22:41, the fifth best Men’s time overall.

“I do cross-country running and track at school,” said Finke. “I wanted to do good, but I didn’t know if I would do this good, but I’m quite proud of myself.”

Alexandria Masse of Winlaw meanwhile won the 5K women’s run with a lightening quick 22 minutes flat.

Masse traditionally races cross-coun-try mountain bikes, cycle-cross, and road racing, but decided to compete in her first Fun Run and inaugural running race setting a personal best on her way to the victory.

“I’m pretty happy with the results, but that’s what I was shooting for,” said Masse. “I’ve been spending a little more time in the running shoes than on the bike, now I’ll transition back to the bike.”

Trail’s Sam Grebe was right behind Masse, finishing second in 22:07, and Amy Sheilds was third at 22:59.

In the end, the event again proved a success thanks to sponsors and organizers that provided refreshments and snacks, as well as a variety of door prizes for partici-pants.

Teck was well-represented again this year but it was Zellstoff Celgar that ended Hall’s Printing two-year reign winning the Golden Shoe, the symbol of corporate challenge supremacy, for the best percent-age of employees’ families to participate in the run.

“It’s all about families,” said Local 480’s Graham Wilson. “Everybody needs a sup-port system.”

B y T i m e s s T a f fTrail’s Todd Robinson of the Allen Americans

scored 2:47 into the first overtime to give the Texas town its first Presidents Cup Championship in a 3-2 thriller over the Wichita Thunder on Saturday night in Allen.

Wichita twice led the series 1-0, and 2-1, and Allen was down in each of its three series in this year’s playoff, so the Americans knew what com-ing back was all about.

FROM PAGE 11 And although the Americans trailed 2-0 after two periods of Game 7 they didn’t panic.

“We were pretty calm actually,” forward Brian McMillin told the Allen Star. “We’ve been down this road

all year, kind of taken the long route to get to wherever we need to be, so we were con-fident we could do it again.”

Jarret Lukin scored 7:13 into the third, winning a battle for the puck in front of the Thunder net and

putting it past Wichita goalie Torrie Jung to cut the lead to 2-1.

With just 2:19 left on the clock, the Americans would score again when Trevor Hendrikx blasted one home from outside the circle to even the score at 2-2.

Robinson would complete the come-back for the Americans in the overtime per-iod taking a long pass from defenceman Mike Montgomery on the right-wing boards, and

firing home his sixth goal and league-lead-ing 22nd point of the playoffs.

McMillin was named the finals MVP while Robinson was selected as the Game 7 first star.

The Americans out-shot Wichita 37-23 for the game including 16-4 in the third per-iod. Aaron Dell stopped 21 of 23 shots for Allen.

Wichita beat Allen 3-2 on Friday night to send the series to a deciding Game 7.

Americans claim CHL title in dramatic fashion

T H E A S S O C I A T E D P R E S SLOS ANGELES - Gatsby looks almost as great

as a superhero at the weekend box office.Leonard DiCaprio’s “The Great Gatsby” par-

tied like it was the Roaring Twenties with a $51.1 million debut that made it a surprisingly strong runner-up to comic-book blockbuster “Iron Man 3.”

Studio estimates Sunday put “Gatsby” at No. 2 behind Robert Downey Jr.’s superhero sequel, which pulled in $72.5 million domestically to raise its total to $284.9 million after just 10 days in U.S. theatres.

With an additional $89.3 million in its third weekend overseas, “Iron Man 3” lifted its inter-national total to $664.1 million and its world-wide haul to $949 million.

Meyers picked as ‘Late Night’ host

T H E A S S O C I A T E D P R E S SNEW YORK - Seth Meyers is moving from

his “Weekend Update” desk to his own late night show on NBC.

The network said Sunday that the 12-year “Saturday Night Live” cast member will replace Jimmy Fallon at the 12:35 a.m. “Late Night” show next year. Fallon is moving up an hour as Jay Leno’s replacement on the “Tonight” show.

Meyers was considered the lead candidate for the “Late Night” job ever since Fallon’s promo-tion was announced. The announcement solid-ifies Lorne Michaels as the comedy kingmaker at NBC. He’ll be the executive in charge of “Late Night,” ”Tonight“ and ”Saturday Night Live.”

Dear Annie: My hus-band and I have been happily married for 15 years and recently decided to try an open-marriage lifestyle. We are doing this with full honesty and respect for each other.

The main problem is that the dating success is not equal. I found it easier to get a date. Whereas, my husband is having a tremendous degree of difficulty. He has online dating pro-files, but no luck. I am seeing someone who is a wonderful person, but I want my husband to experience new things along with me.

Open marriage is still considered taboo, and it is extremely important to my hus-band and me that we are honest about our marital status with any prospective date. Even though he is happy for me, I feel compelled to help him. But I’m not sure how to do it without overstepping unspoken boundaries. -- Open but Lost

Dear Open: Are you sure your husband wants this as much as you do? He may have agreed to the arrange-ment only to please you. We think you need to have this discussion again and let your com-mitment to honesty lead the way. Ask your husband whether he is truly happy with the idea of an open mar-riage and, if so, what you can do to make things easier for him. Marriage, “open” or otherwise, requires the ability to communi-cate.

Dear Annie: Would you please address the distinction between “dinner” and “supper”? I’ve heard many people

refer to the evening meal as dinner, but the definition of an eve-ning meal is supper. I even heard a promi-nent newscaster refer to the president as sit-ting down with a guest at the White House for “dinner” tonight, but if they are sitting down at night, it is clearly sup-per. -- Stickler in the South

Dear Stickler: In most parts of the U.S. and Canada, these words are used inter-changeably. However, there are regional dis-tinctions, which might explain why this both-ers you so much.

According to most definitions, “dinner” refers to the main meal of the day. Back in the Middle Ages, people often ate the main meal at lunch-time. Now we tend to eat it much later, but it is still called “din-ner” regardless of the time. “Supper” refers to a lighter meal taken later in the evening and is often used inter-

changeably with “tea.” The word “dinner” also is used when refer-ring to a formal meal or banquet (hence the president’s dinners), and “supper” is always a less formal affair. We hope that answers your question. Thanks for the change of pace.

Dear Annie: In response to “Wife of the Plumber,” I have only one thing to say: Get out while the gettin’ is good!

Her husband is a total narcissist, and nothing is going to change him. Narcissists are superb at conning people, especially those who love them. We are the ones they treat the worst, because we have that unrealistic hope that given time things will improve.

After almost half a century, I can attest to the fact that no mat-ter how many chances you give, no matter how many promis-es they make and no matter how much you love them or how hard

you work, it will never change. They see noth-ing wrong with them-selves. It is always the other person’s fault. They will not seek help.

I urge her not to throw her life away on someone who will never be there for her. I hoped too much and

loved too strongly, and although still legally married, I have finally reached the point of emotionally withdraw-ing from my self-made prison. If leaving is not feasible, she needs to protect herself and her children from the extreme damage that

is done by living with this type of person. And get counseling. -- Been There, Done That and Escaped
