the preparation of Neem Seed Kernal extract andits use for pest management in cotton and othercrops. Representatives from surgical cottonindustry also attended the training workshop.Seeds to participating farmers were also suppliedat a nominal cost. Apart from this, Better CottonInitiative also took up this desi cotton on 50 farmers'fields in the various districts of Vidarbha. Surveyswere conducted by Dr. D. Blaise, Dr. S.N. Rokde,Dr. Anuradha Narala and Sh. Chaturvedi. It wasobserved that, in general despite being a droughtyear, the farmers who cultivated PhuleDhanwantary following the recommended packageof practices and obtained yields in excess of 6q/acre and as high as 10 q/acre. However, lowyields (2 q/acre) were reported from few farmerswho cultivated the cotton on very shallow and stonysoils without adequate plant stand and due to lateplanting. All the participating farmers were providedwith 5 kilograms of seeds of Phule Dhanwantary,sufficient for planting in one acre, along with aleaflet containing the package of practices.

Awareness training on cotton - soybeanintercropping

ICAR-CICR, Nagpur is implementing FLDs oncotton - soybean intercropping in Nagpur andWardha districts at farmers field. To createawareness about intercropping a one-dayawareness training was organised at villageJogingumpha near Girad in Samudrapur tahsil ofWardha district on 19.6.2015. Dr S.M. Wasnik,Principal Scientist (Agricultural Extension), CICR,Nagpur highlighted the importance of intercroppingand advised the farmers to take short durationintercrops of green gram, black gram in betweentwo rows of cotton. On the occassion, 35 packets of

Bradyrhizobium japonicum were supplied tofarmers for soybean seed treatment forintercropping trials.

One-day Training Camp Under ATMA

A team of CICR scientists comprising of Director,Dr. K. R. Kranthi, Dr. Sandhya, Dr. M.V.Venugopalan, Dr. Vinita Gotmare and Dr.V, Santhyconducted a one-day training camp for more than100 farmers in the Krushi Jagruthi Saptah on 6thJuly 2015 at Jamb, Wardha district organized byATMA. Dr. Vinita in her detailed presentationdescribed the strategies of the HOPS program inMarathi, while Dr. Kranthi gave a brief history on theinception of HOPS. Dr. S. Kranthi, Dr. Venugopalanand Dr. Santhy spoke on protection, production andseed production aspects of HOPS, respectively.The programme was coordinated by Shri RajeshChandewar, BTM Samudrapur.

Training cum field demonstration on HOPStechnology

A training cum field demonstration on HOPS wasorganized at ICAR-CICR Nagpurfor 25 participantsfrom BCI (Better Cotton Initiative) and few otherstakeholders. The programme was co-ordinated byDr. Blaise Desouza, Head, Crop Production. Dr. K.R. Kranthi, Director, ICAR-CICR, gave an overviewof HOPS and its relevance in the present daycontext. He highlighted the ills of sprayingpesticides unnecessarily that are creatingresurgence of sucking pests such as whiteflies. Heinsisted that the indigenous varieties are morerobust and able to withstand most of the biotic andabiotic stresses. Further, these involve a muchlower cost of cultivation. A field visit was organizedto demonstrate the HOPS. The importance of

appropriate spacing and selection of compact,early genotypes was explained by Ms. ShubangiLakde. Dr. Blaise explained about the various inter-crops grown from the view point of saving fertilizerN, obtaining additional returns and moreimportantly meeting the pulse requirement of thecountry. Some legumes and oilseeds such asgroundnut and soybean were also being tried. Theparticipants shared their experience about the on-going trials on HOPS implemented by BCI inMaharashtra. Several questions raised by theparticipants were also addressed by Dr. SandhyaKranthi, Head, Crop Protection and Dr. MVVenugopalan, Principal Scientist. Dr. S. N. Rokde,Dr. Anuradha Narala and Dr. A. Manikandan werealso present.

Training Camp Sponsored by DCD, Min. ofAgri., GOI

The training programme sponsored by theDirectorate of Cotton Development (DCD), Ministryof Agriculture, GOI was organized at CICR, Nagpuron 28 September 2015 for the farmers of Wardhaand Nagpur district of Vidharbha adopted under'Mera Gaon Mera Gaurav' programme. Dr. K. R.Kranthi, Director, CICR stressed the need ofbuilding strong relationships and trust betweenfarmers and scientists. He said that this programmecan help scientists to strengthen their

,understanding of farmer problems so that researchwork can be oriented accordingly. He askedscientists and farmers to be in constant touch sothat a model example of 'Lab to Land' can bedeveloped. He said that the 'e-Kapas' programmewhich sends weekly 'voice mail' advisories to 1.25lakh farmers, should be utilized fully by the farmers.Dr S. M. Wasnik, Principal Scientist, Extension andNodal Officer of MGMG programme highlighted theimportance of the 'Mera Gaon Mera Gaurav'programme. Dr R.P. Singh, Director DCD, GOIoutlined the schemes of his department for cottonfarmers. Dr. D. Blaise, Head Crop Production andDr Suman Bala Singh, Head, Crop Improvement,spoke on production technologies and choice ofappropriate varieties in cotton. Scientists tookfarmers to the experimental fields and explainedresearch work being undertaken. Participants weretaken to experiments of HOPS, intercropping, pestand disease management, goat farming, etc.Literature in local Marathi language on improvedcotton cultivation and other aspects weredistributed. Films on package of practices oncotton, HOPS, nutrient management, pests anddiseases, physiological disorders were shown.Question- answer session organised to clear thedoubts of farmers. Around 230 farmers fromvillages adopted by ICAR-CICR scientists underMGMG programme attended training.

Farmers Training program under NFSM-IRM-HOPS

A one-day farmers training camp was organized byDr. S. Kranthi and Dr. J. Meshram at ICAR-CICR,Nagpur on 31 October, 2015 for the farmers ofWardha District on Insecticide Resistance

Management (IRM) in High Density PlantingSystem (HOPS) under National Food SecurityMission (NFSM). Around 70 NFSM-IRM-HDPSfarmers attended. In Wardha district, incollaboration with Ramkrishna Bajaj College ofAgriculture, Pipri, IRMI HOPS programme is takenup in 35 villages in 174 acres on 154 farmers fields

with variety Suraj. Dr. Sandhya Kranthi, Head, CropProtection Division, ICAR-CICR Nagpur delivereda lecture on the importance of HOPS and Insects-Pest management in cotton while Dr J. H. Meshramdelivered talk on abiotic stress in cotton. Thefarmers were also shown the experiments anddemonstration plots of HOPS. During farmer -scientist interaction, farmers reported that somefields had off type plants and bollworm attack wassevere in some fields. Farmers were asked to takecorrective measures using the right chemicals.

Field Experience Training (FET) Programme forARS trainees

A 21 days FET programme for ARS Scientisttrainees from NAARM, Hyderabad was conductedfrom 8.02.2016 to 28.02.2016 at ICAR-CICR,Nagpur. The FET studies were undertaken atMangali village located at 25 km from Nagpur whichis one of the adopted village of CICR under MeraGaon Mera Gaurav. On the concluding day, thetrainee scientists presented the general socio-economic and agro-ecological scenario of thevillage, constraints identified using PRA tools andsuggestions offered to redress them. They alsointeracted with the Director and scientists of theinstitute. Dr. R.B. Singandhube, Head Ilc, KVK,CICR, Nagpur and Dr. V. Santhy, Senior Scientist,Crop Improvement were the local co-ordinators.

Coimbatore

Training Programmes for Tribal CottonGrowers underTribal Sub Plan

The first training program on "Integrated CropManagement Practices in Cotton" for Tribal Cottongrowers was conducted on 19 & 20 November2015. Sixteen tribal cotton growers from Jolarpet,Vellore district of Tamil Nadu participated. Dr. N.Gopalakrishnan, Project Coordinator (Cotton) and

Head Ilc, CICR, RS, Coimbatore, in his inauguraladdress, elaborated the scenario of cotton in theworld and India and especially in Tamil Nadu.Then, the trainees were exposed to various cottonimprovement, production and protectiontechnologies by the scientists.

The second training program on "Integrated CropManagement Practices in Cotton" was conductedon 18.01.2016 & 19.01.2016. Twelve tribal cottongrowers from Kalvarayan hills, Salem District ofTamil Nadu have participated. The programme wasinaugurated by Dr. S.E.S.A. Khadar, PrincipalScientist and Project Coordinator and Head Ilc on18.1.2016. In his inaugural address, he elaboratedthe scenario of cotton and explained about pruningtechniques in cotton and CICR- Nutrients consortiain detail. The trainees were also exposed to variouscotton improvement, production and protectiontechnologies by the scientists. Training kits andparticipation certificates was distributed.

Sirsa

Farmers Training program under NFS!'II-IRM-HOPS

In Sirsa district, the IRM program was taken up infour villages in 1600 acres area and the HOPSdemonstration programme was conducted on 200acres. Under HOPS programme, Desi cottonvarieties (CICR-1 & CICR-3) were demonstratedunder HOPS with 30,000 plantsl acre as againstnormal planting of 20,000/per acre. One day farmertraining camp was also organized on 1st August inwhich 80 NFSM-IRM-HDPS farmers from differentvillages of Sirsa district attended. Dr D. Monga,Head of the station delivered a lecture on theimportance of HOPS and diseases management incotton, Dr R. A. Meena delivered a lecture on seedproduction in cotton and genotypic suitability underHOPS and Dr Rishi Kumar delivered a lecture on

pest management in cotton. Dr S. L. Ahuja, alsointeracted with the farmers. The farmers were alsoshown the demonstration plot of HDPS.

Training Workshop on Cotton Production

A training workshop on cotton production andprotection technologies was organized on 23October, 2015 in collaboration with United FarmersEmpowerment Initiative (UFEI). Around 80progressive farmers representing regional farmerassociations of Haryana, Punjab and Rajasthanparticipated. At the outset Dr Monga, Head of theRegional Station highlighted the major issuesconcerning cotton farmers in the north zone. Hefocussed on the damage caused by whitefly duringthe season, cotton leaf curl virus disease andstressed on the strategies developed by the stationand their dissemination. He also informed thefarmers about the thrust areas of the station likehigh density planting system and promotion of desicotton varieties and hybrids. Shri P P S Pangali,Chairman UFEI discussed about the objectives ofthe organization and highlighted its initiatives.

Dr Anil Mehta, Professor of Agronomy at CCSHAU,Sirsa delivered a lecture on recent advances incotton production technologies. Dr D Monga and DrRishi Kumar talked about cotton diseases, insectpests and their management. The farmers activelyparticipated and shared their experiences in anopen house discussion on the recent issue ofwhitefly incidence, losses and lessons for thefuture. This was followed by a field visit where CICRtechnologies were showcased. The farmers tookkeen interest in desi (G. arboreum) cotton varietiesdeveloped by the station.

Farmer's Training program cum exposure

A training programme cum exposure visit for thefarmers adopted by the Ambuja CementFoundation was organised on 10.11.2015. Twentyfive participants including farmers and workers offoundation participated. Dr Rishi Kumar, PrincipalScientist, CICR, delivered a lecture on whiteflymanagement in cotton and other alternate hosts.The farmers visited the demonstrations on highdensity planting system in cotton and various Desicotton genotypes.

Mera Gaon Mera Gaurav Programme

'Mera Gaon Mera Gaurav (My Village My pride)'programme launched by the Hon'ble Prime Ministeron July 25, 2015 during 8th Foundation Day ofICAR and KVK conference at Patna has beeninitiated at CICR Nagpurfrom September 2015 witha view to hasten the process of Lab to Land. Underthe scheme, as per the guidelines the scientistsremain in touch with the adopted villages andprovide information to farmers on technical andother related aspects in the time frame throughpersonal visits and other means. ICAR- CICR alongwith its Regional Stations CICR, Coimbatore andCICR, Sirsa implementing the programme throughthe team of scientists; each team comprises of fourscientists with five clusters of villages as perguidelines. Accordingly, 65 villages were adoptedfrom 13 clusters villages i.e. eight, four and onerespectively from Nagpur, Coimbatore and Sirsaand the lists of team comprising of Nodal Officer,Scientist's team and cluster villages adopted are asgiven in Table 5.2.2.1.

Base line survey

For assessing the ground realities and for base linesurvey, all the team had discussion with PanchayatPresident, Vice President, Ex. Vice President,Executive Secretary, Village Administrative Officerand other members and several farmers in thevillages and collected the base line information ofthe villages for formulation and further implementa-tion of strategies. Parseoni cluster in Nagpur districtadopted villages are situated under forest area anddominated by tribal. The farmers are resourcespoor and are not in a position to adopt newtechnological interventions unless it is supportedby the line department. Again, they are totallydependent on rainfall, on many occasions due toerratic distribution of monsoon rains their kharifcrop suffers. Based on the exploration anddiscussion with various clients, each teams incluster formulated the programme and followingstrategies for further implementation.

The various teams organize an interactive meetwith farmers at MGMG villages and discussedcurrent cropping scenario and related issues.Imparted training regarding collection of soilsamples from the field for analysis to prepare soilhealth cards and also suggested control measuresfor insect pests of important crops including cotton.The farmers and scientists interacted on variousissues related to insect pest management ofagricultural, horticultural crops and animalhusbandry issues. Large number of villagersincluding women actively participated in theseminar and discussion organised at differentplaces.
