2. Describe the calibration and use of a Surface Profile

Needle Gauge?

• Place the needle gauge on a glass, and then apply

slight pressure to the foot to ensure that is perfectly

on the glass. Loosen the locking screw and bring the

Bezel to zero and tighten the locking screw. The

gauge is now calibrated .Take a minimum of 10

readings, in random positions over the substrate. The

average of the reading is calculated, which is the

surface profile reading cannot be used in curved

surfaces.

3. List the safety equipment required for an abrasive blasting

operation on site?

• Carbon impregnated hose, hoses to be short as much

as possible

• Earthing the pot, using the reinforced hoses, external

bayonet type coupling

• Air fed helmet with adequate visors ,safety in

accordance with IGE SR 21

• Leather apron and gloves

• Ear protectors

• Scaffolding with safe tags ,boots, barriers warning

signs

• Deadmans handle in direct control with blasting

operator.

4. What is the definition of the Barrier principle?

• It provides a physical impermeable coating to project

the underlying substrate .The coating system

physically prevents the electrolyte from making

contact with the substrate



5. Describe the use of a banana gauge on Aluminium and

Galvanised substrates?

• Banana gauge cannot be used on aluminium, If used

on galvanized substrate, thickness of zinc coating

should be deducted (100 micron).

• NOTE : can also be used on ferritic stainless steel

6. What information needs to be recorded on a site painting

report?

• Time , Dry bulb temp ,Wet bulb temp , Dew point ,

Steel temp, R.H % for morning and afternoon areas

inspected, grade of surface preparation .

• Type of paint, method of application, abrasive

supplier, paint supplier, Contract No, Date, Batch no,

Size of abrasive, Pressure applied.

7. Disadvantages and advantages of airless spray and

conventional spray?

8. What product should be used for pipe coatings in damp

conditions?

• Moisture curing polyurethane should be applied in

damp condition only and not on wet conditions, shouldbe applied by brush only.

9. Describe the use of danger Bellows and what colour crystal

change would you expect, if carrying out a test fir xylene?

fillers and putties?

• Triple roll mill

11. What safety factors should be observed when using

solvents?

• Toxicity should be checked ,Flash point ,Eye hand

• Raise a non – confirmatory report .Give the corrective

action to the concerned engineer. Recommend reblast

and recoat in correct sequence in accordance with

PA10.

• Compounds of cobalt – Blue• Compounds of chromium – Green ,yellow and orange
