Training is linked to professional development opportunities and pathways to further tertiary studies relevant to remote health practice. CORPORATE COURSES

Aboriginal Cultural Awareness Program (ACAP) Departmental Orientation & Mandatory Training

ACAP is a program that aims to provide staff with the skills, knowledge and attitudes to work effectively with Aboriginal clients in order to achieve improved health. Participants gain an introduction to Aboriginal culture and society. The session topics include culture, worldview, social history, Aboriginal kinship (extended family) and communication.

This training is recommended for all staff, particularly those working with Aboriginal people.

This is a multi-disciplinary orientation program for all new DHF staff. The orientation program is designed to cover mandatory training requirements and other relevant information that will assist employees to contribute to DHF in an efficient timeframe.

This training is a corporate requirement for all staff.

Finance for Cost Centre Managers Four Wheel Drive (4WD)

This Management Training program is designed to provide a solid base level of knowledge to Cost Centre Managers regarding the management of financial resources. This training concentrates on the mechanics of managing financial resources, the legislative framework and the management of budgets and cash flowing.

This training is Recommended for anyone responsible for budget management.

4WD training is offered to all employees who are required to travel via 4WD to remote and/or rural communities not accessible via bitumised road. This training is to ensure that those who are required to travel via 4WD have the basic 4WD competencies to ensure a safe journey. These sessions contain a practical assessment.

Recommended for staff who travel to remote and/or rural localities via 4WD.

Library Information Research and Health Literacy Training in Evidenced-Based Resources

Mediation Skills for Managers

The Library is offering training in the use of library knowledge resources. How to find the evidence you need to help with your work i.e. clinical decision making, writing guidelines and policy, professional development and education, information for projects and research. Training can be delivered in the eLearning Library at your work place or online via your computer. The content and training can be customised to suit the needs of your group. The mediation workshop is an introduction to basic mediation skills and is designed to develop Manager’s skills and confidence in responding to disputes in the workplace.

This training is recommended for all managers/supervisors and/or aspiring managers.

Recruitment and Selection Training The Essentials of Leading People Part 1

The Recruitment and Selection Training is designed to increase awareness and understanding of the Department of Health & Families (DHF) Recruitment and Selection Policy and Guidelines. Participants will have the opportunity to learn how to plan a selection process, undertake short listing processes, utilise referees effectively and an awareness of the sensitivities, considerations and support available when assessing applications from different cultures, non-English speaking backgrounds and applicants with disabilities.

This training is recommended for all staff that undertake recruitment activities.

The Essentials of Leading People Part 2 will enable participants to have an improved understanding and confidence in:

The Essentials of Managing Procurement Part 2

Managing Procurement Part 2 will enable participants to gain an increased understanding and ability to follow the relevant:

DHF processes which apply to procuring goods and services to a value of $15,000 to $50,000.00

CLINICAL LEARNING COURSES Advanced Life Support (Multidisciplinary)

There will be a variety of Adult and Paediatric Advanced Life Support programs delivered, including Instructors training, to provide the knowledge and skills to be able to safely and effectively deliver advanced resuscitation skills, in either the adult or paediatric setting, and in accordance with the Australian Resuscitation Council (ARC) guidelines. There will be a variety of delivery modes available, as advertised or in negotiation with Clinical Learning.

Pre-requisite: BLS Competent Health professional with > 12 months experience

Please note: Applications for this course close two weeks prior to the course commencement date in order to meet the pre course reading requirements.

Advanced Life Support Obstetrics (ALSO) Basic Life Support Assessors Training Workshop (Inter-professional)

The ALSO (Advanced Life Support in Obstetrics) course is a theoretical and practical course designed to assist health professionals develop and maintain the knowledge and practical skills to manage emergencies that may arise in maternity care.

MAYHEM CORP ARE THE ALSO COURSE PROVIDERS & COORDINATORS.

Register for this course online with ALSO (Advanced Life Support in Obstetrics) at http://www.also.net.au/.

This workshop is for Health Professionals to become proficient in assessing participants for Basic Life Support skills.

Participants must have current BLS competencies.

Basic Life Support with/without Automatic External Defibrillation (AED) Cardiac Care Course

These sessions are in place to assist Work Units with meeting annual assessment requirements for their staff, involved in Basic Life Support. Attendees are provided with up to date information from the Australian Resuscitation Guidelines and given the opportunity to practice skills.

Suitable for all health professionals.

Introduces participants to basic ECG’s, rhythm interpretation and the management of a patient with acute coronary syndromes.

Eligibility: Health professionals with at least 12 months clinical experience and a good knowledge of cardiac anatomy and physiology.

Community Child & Family Health Continuing Professional Development Community Primary Care Professional Development Workshop

These one day workshops provide specific education for urban Community Child and Family Health Professionals.

CLINICAL LEARNING COURSES

Clinical Teaching (Inter-professional)

Early Recognition and Management of the Acutely ill Patient (ERM) Adult and Paediatric workshops

This course seeks to develop the unique skills of applying teaching and learning theory to clinical practice to make teaching more effective.

This program will be delivered utilising a variety of educational modalities including; presentations, case scenarios, role-play, group work and discussion forums.

Suitable for Health Professionals working in the clinical environment.

A training program for health professionals caring for acutely ill patients

This program focuses on early recognition of potentially life-threatening conditions and the initiation of responses that will decrease the risk of adverse outcomes.

ECG Advanced ECG for Beginners

This will provide the skills to interpret advance 12 lead ECG’s with a variety of conditions, including bundle branch blocks, valvular disease and pacing, and be able to apply this knowledge to enhance patient management.

Eligibility: Registered Nurses, Midwives and Medical Officers with at least 12 months clinical experience and a good knowledge of basic 12 lead ECG interpretation. Most beneficial for health professionals working within a Critical Care setting or Remote.

Pre-requisite: Introduction to ECG’s, Cardiac Care Course (or their equivalent).

This course will teach participants to interpret basic rhythm strips and identify ischaemic ECG changes. Content includes: Cardiac Electrophysiology, Components of ECG, Basic Rhythm Strips (sinus, atrial, junctional, and ventricular.) 12 Lead ECG changes associated with acute coronary syndrome.

Family Partnership Foundation Course (FPFC) Fetal Surveillance Education Program (FSEP)

The Family Partnership Foundation Course (FPFC) aims to assist non-mental Health workers (regardless of profession of background) to deal effectively with the psychological and social problems that arise commonly in the life of all families.

In order to work within a model of family-centred practice, workers need to be effective helpers.

The FPFC has been designed to enable participants to develop support and effective partnerships with parents who have a variety of needs that may interfere with their ability to parent effectively.

Professor Hilton Davis and colleagues from the UK developed the program. It was introduced into Australia in 2001 and the training program is now available in every state and Territory in Australia.

A one-day program aimed at improving the understanding confidence, interpretation and management of cardiotocography (CTG) & associated foetal monitoring techniques. Thus reducing the risk of adverse peri-natal outcomes.

The program utilises the RANZCOG intra-partum fetal surveillance clinical guidelines.

Royal Australian & New Zealand College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists (RANZCOG) offers this program – through Clinical Learning.

Cost TBA.

Recommended for student midwives, midwives and medical practitioners.

Note RDH requires evidence of ongoing foetal monitoring education annually

Health Promoting School Nurse Professional Development Leadership Training for Team Leaders

This three-day workshop is specifically for Health Promoting School Nurses employed in this role.

Note: There may be some pre-reading required.

A two-day workshop for Nurses who are team leaders or potential team leaders to provide them with a tool kit of knowledge and skills to assist them with their role. This includes presentations on topics such as rostering, bed management, incident reporting and models of care delivery.

Suitable for Health Professionals in the clinical setting.

CLINICAL LEARNING COURSES

Preceptorship (Inter-professional)

Preceptorship (New Graduates)

Preceptors assist new employees and students to acquire the socialisation, knowledge and skills necessary for the work place. The course will develop skills to provide clinical teaching, perform assessments, and manage necessary documentation.

This course is suitable for health professionals wanting to take on an advanced practice role, assisting new employees and students in clinical settings. It is also suitable to update preceptors who have participated in training previously or interstate.

This course is endorsed with RCNA 3LP Life Long Learning Program and is allocated 6 CNE points.

Suitable for health professionals with > 12 months experience in their field of practice.

The aim of this one day training program is to provide recently graduated RN’s/EN’s with the knowledge to acquire the skills and confidence to become effective preceptors. Preceptors assist new employees and students to acquire the necessary socialisation, knowledge and skills to function in the work environment.

This course is endorsed with RCNA 3LP Life Long Learning Program and is allocated 6 CNE points.

Suitable for new graduates only.

Preparation for Clinical Management Professional Documentation & Record Management Workshop

This two-day course will develop skills and knowledge for Registered Nurses and Midwives who aspire to become Clinical Nurse managers or are acting in the role in acute community and remote settings. It can provide useful information for current Nurse Managers.

This three-hour workshop will suit all staff who work with client/consumer records, who wish to have a clear understanding of the importance of keeping accurate, comprehensive and well maintained corporate, personnel and client records. Suitable for all Health Professionals.

Professional Portfolio Development Workshop

This one day workshop for Health Professionals will assist in the development of a professional practice portfolio.

Portfolios are required as evidence of competence for professional regulation and employment as well as continuing professional development activities.

About Giving Vaccines About Giving Vaccines Assessors Training

The About Giving Vaccine workshops are delivered either as a three day workshop for RAN or a five day workshop for AHW. These workshops provide formal training in the management and administration of vaccines to fulfil requirements to section 90 protocols 29 (4A) of the poisons Act for childhood immunisation practice. Five day suitable for Aboriginal Health Workers only. Three day suitable for Registered Nurses, Registered Midwives, General Practitioners.

This one-day course available to Immunisation providers who have gained competency in About Giving Vaccines and wish to become AGV Assessors. This course provides knowledge and a skill required to conduct AGV clinical assessments in the workplace and complies with Mandatory requirements for all registered AGV assessors.

About Giving Vaccines Up Skilling (Refresher)

A one-day course for Nurses, Midwives and Medical Practitioners who gained a NT AGV competency between 1998 and 2007, with current immunisation experience are required to complete an up skilling session.

Aggression Minimisation & Management Emergency Wardens Chief & Floor / Fire Wardens & their delegates Training

Generic information session provided in Orientation Programs This generic information session covers the DHF Zero tolerance to aggressive behaviour, signs of aggression, triggers for aggression, defusing & disengaging techniques, reporting & recording obligations & methods, recovery phase and counselling services options.

At the end of the session nominated wardens will be fully conversant with the emergency response strategy and their roles and responsibilities within the strategy. Course content will include legislative responsibilities in relation to fire and evacuation plans, outline of detection and containment systems within buildings and physical inspection of fire panels. Details of who responds to what /who goes where, outline of events to occur in confirmed fire situation, and planning of desk top exercise to cover announcement of alarm through to all clear

OHS Training for Managers Manual Handling Resource Personnel Training

This Managers training session will cover employers & employees statutory duty of care towards all persons in the work place, Incident/Accident/Hazard reporting & investigation processes, planning, applying & monitoring Risk Management processes & principles, notifiable incidents to NT WorkSafe, applying Injury prevention strategies, managing Workers Compensation claims, return to work program & rehabilitation processes. Managers will also be made aware of the need for Workplace OH&S Induction requirements for all staff and Mandated Training in the Department of Health and Families

Provides participants with skills and knowledge to become a resource person for performing safe manual tasks in the workplace. Manual handling resource personnel can assist managers to provide a safe workplace (from a manual handling perspective) and contribute towards a manual handling program in individual work environments This training has both theoretical and practical aspects to it.

Fire Safety & Emergency Response Awareness Session OHS Awareness General Information Session

Generic information session provided in Orientation Programs This general information session for all staff covers access & escape routes, fire fighting equipment, warning systems & their use, emergency response & evacuation plans and alarms & monitoring systems.

Generic information session provided in Orientation Programs This information session will provide participants with general information on Joint Legislative obligations & responsibilities, Departmental Policies/Procedures/Guidelines, The Four Foundation Blocks of the OH&S Management System (OHSMS) – 10 Point Plan and Reporting and Recording.

OHS Training for All Employees Safe Manual Handling Information Awareness Session

This training covers employers & employees statutory duty of care towards all persons in the work place. Incident/Accident/Hazard reporting & investigation processes, applying Risk Management processes and principles and working with injury prevention strategies. Working with employees who are on a return to work or rehabilitation program and workplace OH&S Induction.

Generic information session provided in Orientation Programs

This general information session for all staff covers the Risk Management Process, applying principles of body mechanics, stretch & flex exercises, Anatomy & physiology of spine, posture & loads, causes of injury & Injury prevention and demo & group participation of pseudo base manual tasks.

Workplace OHS Committee Training

This training covers Legislative obligations (employees & employer) relating to Workplace OHS Committees, Committee role & functions and DHF Committee reporting structure.

EMERGENCY, DISASTER, TRAUMA COURSES

Coordinate Resources Within a Multi-Agency Emergency Reponse

This unit covers the competency to bring together organisations and other resources to support an emergency management response.

Coordination refers to the bringing together of organisations and other resources to support an emergency management response. It involves the systematic acquisition and application of resources (organisational, human and equipment) in an emergency situation.

Content 1. Commence coordination 2. Establish and maintain a coordination network 3. Manage resource requirements in accordance with control requirements 4. Conclude coordination activities 5. Review coordination.

Undertake Emergency Planning

This Emergency Planning program is designed to support the achievement of the national industry competency standard Undertake emergency planning PUAEMR010A.

The unit covers the competency required to collaboratively develop new/revised emergency plans.

To aid transfer of learning, each delivery of this program will simulate a particular workplace context. While the context may vary, successful completion of the program will result in the competence to undertake emergency planning.

Unit Descriptor

The unit covers the competency required to collaboratively develop new/revised emergency plans by organisations such as: local government, emergency services or government agencies and departments; event organisers; managers of utilities, critical infrastructure or high occupancy buildings; and service providers.

The unit recognises that emergency planning requires processes and outcomes to be regularly checked, tested, revised and updated as conditions change. Planning is also seen as an important way of building the resilience of organisations and communities through their active involvement in the process.

Introduction to Disaster Management

The IDM course is intended for Counter Disaster Planning Committees and DH&F staff who are involved with disaster management, which may include Cyclones, major flooding, earthquakes or any emergency that involves a multi agency response.

The DH&F has 3 groups that are part of any counter disaster planning and operations, they are Welfare, Medical and Health Protection these groups response roles vary depending on the emergency.

This course covers the Northern Territory and Commonwealth counter disaster arrangements, vulnerability assessment and planning, hazard identification, risk analyses and assessment, and a syndicate exercise session where all these components are brought together to formulate an emergency plan.
