CHEMISTRY IS HERE, THERE AND EVERYWHEREThe École Nationale Supérieure de Chimie de Lille (ENSCL) has been offering cross-curricular courses in chemistry since 1894.

Our students receive extensive knowledge and develop skills in formulation chemistry, sustainable chemistry, processes, materials and catalysis. They also attend classes in foreign languages, social sciences, management, project management, cost management and company life.

This is what gives our students the ability to join the industrial world as responsible engineers.

As this school is in close contact with internationally acclaimed research laboratories, our students are able to remain in close connection with scientific and technological research. Our chemical engineers go on to find numerous jobs in many fields of the industrial world. Today, they are key workers in fields such as chemistry, pharmaceuticals, cosmetics, paints, polymers, bio-sourced products, energy, metallurgy, pollution treatment and waste treatment. Chemistry is everywhere. Who other than a chemical engineer can address the economic and environmental challenges we face today?

France’s fourth biggest city, Lille, with fantastic access to three European hubs, presents an impressive culture scene to boot and a growing influx of hipsters. There is a lot more to Lille than meets the eye.

Lille is the third-biggest “student city” in France, after Paris and Lyon, with over 100,000 students - many of whom are international students.

In 2004, Lille was elected European Capital of Culture and since then the Lille 3000 programme has pushed for the promotion of the city’s cultural heritage and contemporary artists through regular events and festivals.

Alongside its highbrow culture, Lille is historically a market town. The Wazemmes market in the city centre is a real Aladdin’s cave, selling everything from fruit and vegetables to furniture and electronics. The flea market known as La Grande Braderie is an eagerly awaited event, kicking off in the first week of September and attracting thousands of shoppers.

Known as the “Capitale des Flandres”, Lille is particularly well-known for its Flemish roots. The city only became French when Louis XIV besieged it and conquered it from the Spanish Netherlands in 1667. The Vieux Lille (the oldest part of the city) is a showcase of the city’s French and Flemish architecture. The streets are paved with stone and lined with tall red-brick buildings and golden sandstone houses which are now well established upmarket shops and flats.

The Palais des Beaux-Arts museum, home to France’s second largest art collection (after the Louvre), displays art by Goya, Rembrandt and Rubens.

Lille lies at the heart of the triangle that links three of Europe’s main cities - London, Paris and Brussels. It seems like all roads and railways lead to Lille, which is 35 minutes from Brussels, one hour from Paris and 80 minutes from London. Therefore, it is a very accessible location for a weekend away. The city also possesses the world’s first driverless underground system, which opened in 1983.

The duration of the study programme is 3 years following 2 or 3 years of “preparation” (an intensive undergraduate preparatory programme in mathematics, physics and chemistry), like in every French Engineering school.

The ENSCL’s courses in the engineering curriculum aim at preparing engineers not only in the fields of chemistry and physical chemistry, but also in chemical engineering and engineering sciences. Therefore, students form the ENSCL are able to quickly adapt to different aspects of an engineer’s work in a chemical, parachemical or metallurgical company.

Students also gradually learn about future careers through courses in economics and management with seminars and plant visits. At the end of their studies, they will complete an engineering project, often in an industrial environment.

The “National Graduate School of Engineering Chemistry of Lille” (École Nationale Supérieure de Chimie de Lille, ENSCL) was founded in 1894 as the “Institut de Chimie de la Faculté des Sciences de Lille” and is located on the campus of the University of Lille in Villeneuve d’Ascq (15 min from the city centre).

It is a public institution of higher education overseen by the Ministry of National Education and Research which has authorised the ENSCL to award MSc in Chemistry and Chemical Engineering recognised by the French Engineering Accreditation Commission upon completion of the curriculum. The ENSCL is also a member of the Gay-Lussac Federation* which gathers 20 schools of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering in France.

Most of our courses are taught in French (please check page 9 for our courses taught in English).

Specifics of our engineering programme*

Year 1: Students further their knowledge in all the basics of chemistry.

Year 2: Students start learning about industrial uses of chemistry. During Semester 8 they will choose a major.

Clean processes: biotechnologies, process intensification, green polymer processes

Environment: treatment of gaseous effluents, of waste water, of polluted soils and recovery of rare earths and metals

How can we use resources from the plant world? How can we transform

biomass? How can we produce bioenergy? Or biosourced materials?

How can we make industrial processes cleaner? Better? How do we limit

waste? How do we recycle, upcycle waste? How can we decontaminate

contaminated areas?

The Sustainable Chemistry and Processes Area of Study will give

you the knowledge and skills needed to face the social and

environmental challenges that the industrial world struggles

against.

Scientific progress has always been fascinating to me and our planet’s welfare has always been at the centre of my preoccupations. With this in mind, after the 2 year preparatory qualification (CPI), I joined the ENSCL and when it came to choose which Area of Study to pursue (Semester 9) I naturally chose Sustainable Chemistry and Processes. This choice allowed me to work on the protection of the environment, the transition movement while still being a chemical engineer.

During my final year project internship, I was in charge of the implementation of a new system of industrial waste treatment. Thanks to this experience, which was a success for the company, I joined SARP Industries, a branch of VEOLIA, which specialises in the treatment and recycling of dangerous waste, as a lab and development manager.

The knowledge I gained at the ENSCL is central when it comes to choosing which analytical technique to use when characterising types of waste (mineral, organic, liquid solid, flammable oxidant, explosive…). I am also able to improve industrial processes in terms of electrochemistry, chemical engineering, thermochemistry, analytical chemistry and catalysis.

FORMULATION CHEMISTRY

The art of blending various ingredients fascinates you?

You wish to create cosmetics, detergents, inks, paints, oils or fuels?

Then, the Formulation Chemistry Area of Study is for you.

Mixing various raw materials to create stable and homogeneous

products with specific properties (texture, colour, smell, taste...),

based on theoretical knowledge, while answering to functional

specifications: this is the aim of Formulation Chemistry.

On a daily basis, I not only deal with requests and non-conformity issues but also with implementing the necessary procedures in connexion with our other activities around the world.

Discipline, the ability to think and having an analytical mind are all assets I developed at the ENSCL all of which are useful in my job.

The Formulation Chemistry Area of Study allows me to be proactive, especially when it comes to solving problems regarding our products’ formulae and analytical issues.

The Formulation Chemistry Area of Study taught me how to grasp the technical difficulties that come with complex blends in today’s cosmetics. I then chose to enhance my skills in management in order to be able to apply to key positions in business. After having finished my studies, I was hired by Solvay as an international marketing manager. This position gives me the possibility to use my skills in terms of chemistry and of business management in order to bring about innovative chemistry for tomorrow’s cosmetics. As I have always wanted to work overseas, during my studies, I took all the opportunities to go abroad which the ENSCL offers and was able to do two placements abroad. Thanks to this, I chose to begin my career in the United-States where I now work in an international team in constant connexion with other continents.

OPTIMISATION AND RELIABILITY OF MATERIALS

Metals, alloys, glass, ceramics, polymers, composite materials: the world

we live in is made of materials. Materials are at the core of many great

technical revolutions: electronics, IT, automobile, aviation, renewable energy...

Engineers who have chosen the Optimisation and Reliability of Materials

Area of Study are able to solve issues when it comes to production

and use of materials in the industrial world. They are also able

to understand and enhance their properties as well as their behaviour

by using top-level analytical and numerical tools.

Julie ANDRÉOLLI, graduated in 2014 components and technology engineer

at Décathlon

I wanted to work with tangible products so I chose this Area of Study. Even with this choice, I have a rather broad knowledge in chemistry and I joined Décathlon as a “chemical engineer”. Weird words and the production of polymers did not frighten me. I was going to work on a fun and tangible product: skate wheels!

My knowledge in both chemistry and materials has allowed me to be the link between the suppliers of raw materials and the product developers. I begin by speaking of chemistry (polyurethane’s raw material). I then go on to manufacturing processes and, finally, material resiliency and properties. The main problem I have to face is the choice of material to use for a given application.

The ENSCL’s curriculum being multidisciplinary, I was able to do several very different placements in France and abroad. Afterwards I had the chance to join a field in which I have always wanted to work: aviation.

Most of our courses are taught in French. However the ENSCL offers the following programme enabling to reach a minimum of 30 ECTS (for one semester) in English (at the audience’s request).

The possibility to mix courses with a research project is given to students, enabling them to reach 30 ECTS (per semester).

RESEARCH AT THE ENSCL

This development has been carried out in close cooperation and with the support of the University of Lille thanks to the two institutions’ close relationship and proximity.

The scientific relevance of the work undertaken by both of the ENSCL’s research teams is guaranteed by its status as an associate unit to the CNRS. Each of these teams maintains a productive relationship with the industrial sector and the scientific community (both public and private) by filing patents and publishing a considerable number of articles each year in scientific journals, which are read internationally. The laboratories associated with the ENSCL have extensive experience of working with companies. Therefore, they regularly deliver patents that solve direct industrial problems.

Whether it involves catalysis, solid state chemistry, organic chemistry, polymers, metallurgy, surface treatment and analysis or fireproof materials, our researchers do their utmost to provide solutions to industrial requests.

Maintaining a high level of education for engineers-to-be students requires for our school’s curriculum to be up to date with the latest research and technological developments. Exchange students usually choose teaching units from our engineering courses (these units are taught in French or in English) but they can also organise a research project (in English) or even do both.

APPLICATION PROCESS

HOW TO APPLYAccording to our official procedure, in order to be a candidate, you must be nominated by your home university using a nomination sheet for universities that have an agreement with us. Nominated students who will be accepted at the ENSCL will automatically receive an email with detailed information.(2)

an annual average mark (calculated by using the grade-weighting factor provided for each module) above or equal to 10/20 for each Teaching Unit,

an average mark above or equal to 07/20 for each module,

each Teaching Unit must be validated.

If one of these conditions has not been met, a second session of examination is organised after each semester. The jury, taking place after the resit, decides to validate the corresponding semesters and/or to award the diploma.

THE GRADING SYSTEM

Each training year is structured in Teaching Units (“Unités d’Enseignement, U.E”), which are composed of modules. Each module is assigned its own grade-weighting factor (“coefficient”) published at the start of each academic year in the education regulation and is marked from 0 to 20. The mark results from individual or group assessment (written and/or oral) of lectures, practical, projects.

The exhaustive list of modules followed by the student and their cluster by units in order to obtain the sum of average marks are presented in the attached copy of grades.

Placements imply a written report and in some case an oral presentation in front of a jury. The appreciation of the industrial tutor is included in the marking as well as the editorial, scientific and technical quality of the report and of the oral presentation.

FRENCH LANGUAGE

Most of our classes are taught in French (please check our study programme in order to find the list of courses taught in English). A sufficient level of French is required in order to understand classes. Any foreign student wishing to join us should be able to attend lectures taught in French as well as work with books or documents written in French.

However, students who wish to benefit from a research placement in a lab without any added classes will be accepted regardless of their level in French since their project(1) can be carried out in English.

French classes are offered on a weekly basis (financial participation may be required depending on the number of students, around 100 € per year).

FURTHER INFORMATION

• You can join an intensive course(2) during the summer

• There will be French level assessments in mid-September

• French as a Foreign Language (FLE) courses start at the beginning of October (2 hours per week) and take place on campus

USEFUL INFORMATION AND STUDENT SUPPORT SERVICES

ACCOMMODATION

It can be very difficult to find housing in Lille upon arrival in September. However, we, at the ENSCL, have signed an agreement with the CROUS Office, reserving rooms for our students.

Residence halls (Bachelard, Boucher, Camus, and Galois) are located on campus, close to student cafeterias and to underground stations. Rooms are attributed to students in September. These rooms are entirely under the supervision of the ENSCL.

Students whose application to Lille has been accepted must fill out their accommodation form(1) before the 15th of April, if arriving in September, and the 30th of October, for an arrival for the second semester, and send it by e-mail to: international@ensc‐lille.fr.

If a student is given a room by the International Office and accepts it, they have to live in that room for the entire duration of their stay. Please note that the student will be charged a full month’s rent whatever their arrival/departure date is.

All reservations are irrevocable and engage the student for the duration of their stay. In the event that a student wishes to leave their room without warning earlier than specified in their contract, they will be charged one month of rent. Any early departure from the room must be preceded by a 2-month written notice(2) to the International Office. No change of address without the approval of the International Office of the ENSCL will be tolerated.

RESIDENCE PERMIT

If you are a citizen of a European Union (EU) Member State other than France or of the European Economic Area (EEA) or of Switzerland or the family member of a citizen of an EU Member State other than France, the EEA or Switzerland, you will not need a student visa, regardless of the duration of your stay.

All non-European Union students who plan to stay in France must have a valid student visa.(3)

COST OF LIVING

The cost of living in France varies depending on where you live. The cost of living in Lille or in many other areas can be lower than in several other cities, like Paris.

The cost of living for a student in Lille is roughly 800 € a month. If you are required to have a residence permit before moving to Lille, you will need to show that you have this sum of money available for each month you plan on studying in France.

MEET OUR STUDENTS

Hattie CHISNALLMy time in France. It’s always going be an incredibly daunting experience to uproot yourself from your home, catch a flight and arrive miles away from where you started, to begin living somewhere new. For me, it wasn’t the masses of croissants and cheese I ate, or the gallons of French wine I drank that made me feel settled, but instead all of the welcoming and wonderful people that I met. Lille is a beautiful place to experience a year abroad. It has such an international community which is friendly and open-minded and welcomes you from the minute you arrive.

Admittedly, my skills in French were practically non-existent upon my arrival but the students forgave my terrible accent and lack of French and warmly welcomed me into the ENSCL. Those involved in organising events and societies on campus make a genuine effort to include you in everything going on. Therefore, meeting people and getting involved in the school’s activities was never difficult. My year abroad was based on an internship in one of the ENSCL’s labs (Catalysis and Solid State Chemistry [UCCS]) where I worked with so many fun and interesting individuals from all over the world. Each one taught me new things about their cultures and lives.

Lille is also exceptional in that it is conveniently equidistant between Paris, London and Brussels making day trips or weekends away to any of these amazing capitals possible. You’re also never far from a beautiful French town, a totally new country or the North Sea. Overall, I had such a wonderful time living in the north of France – tasting new food, meeting new people and having the opportunity to expand my skills in a new lab.

Bianca RODRIGUEZ-MAZZARELLOHello, my name is Bianca. I am from Spain and I am currently doing a year abroad at the ENSCL. Lille was my first choice for my Erasmus year, for the city itself and for the ENSCL. It seemed to me that the courses the ENSCL offers were quite interesting and I could also do my final project in one of their laboratories (UMET).

What I did not know was that the ENSCL is very involved in trying to help foreign students feel like they are part of the school, thanks to the Welcome Club. Moreover, the teachers are very friendly and are always willing to help you. Furthermore, there are many activities, parties, sports activities organised around the campus which means that you never get bored and you do not feel alone.

The city is beautiful. There are several museums and monuments that can be visited free of charge. The city has many bars which allows you to meet other students. It is also very well connected to other areas of Europe which allows you to travel for a small price, thanks to different bus and train companies, a great bonus if you like travelling. The truth is, it is an unforgettable and indescribable experience. Only by living it will you know what it feels like.

Zlata RYKAVETSIn the beginning I was often frustrated. When you arrive, you feel a bit confused and you have to solve the issues of insurance, housing, school enrolment, and so on. It was difficult for me to get used to this alien environment. The Welcome Club helped me a lot. They taught me how to survive during the first few days. They also organised meals and even friendly walks. Furthermore, both international and French students have always supported and helped me with my English. It would be unfair to not recall the staff of the International Office who never got tired of answering any questions.

The ENSCL is a wonderful educational place with modern equipment, a great library and beautiful landscapes around. Moreover, the school always has a warm atmosphere, you will never be left alone to deal with a problem. All the teachers are professionals in their area of study and this shows in their manner of teaching.

As I did not speak French before coming here, my studies and cooperation with the teachers motivated me to learn the language. I acquired a great deal of experience (working in the lab UMET) which is vital in the working world. Experiencing working days in a foreign country and working with people from all over the world is something a classroom can never replicate with lectures and exams. It has been an eye opener for me after which I feel ready to face the working world and reality. I also learnt a lot and made loads of new friends.

Overall, it was a challenge for me, which I took on and will never regret. This experience has made me more excited to continue working in this field. I now feel more prepared to reach my goals and build my career.
