SOCCER IN SASKATOON
www.hollandiasoccer.com
Most local teams focus on physical and mental aspects. Hardworking players who lack higher skill level and understanding are common-place, but it is difficult to find confident, creative and skilled players who can change a game.
Local player development is historically based on largely on results rather than learning, leading to a focus on teamwork rather than individual skill development
HOLLANDIA’S DEVELOPMENT MODEL
• A progressive model with technical proficiency at the forefront
• Designed to develop confidence and creativity
• Delivered in a way that keeps players active and engaged
• Fosters, above all, a love for the game

Important for parents and coaches understand steps of development and to know how, when and where to apply various coaching styles and materials.
6 - 9 YEAR OLD PRIORITIES
www.hollandiasoccer.com
Technique is the major focus with
fast feet, ball manipulation and
basic moves emphasized
Application of technique, use of both feet, passive
defending
Lots of praise for effort, not talent. Guided discovery.
Teach 1-2 new items at a time
Ball manipulation develops balance,
coordination & agility. SSG
develop fitness
Focus is on technical development. Great coaches create a positive learning environment. The use of skills is encouraged regardless of where on the field. Coaches use mainly “Guided Discovery” methodology. Lots of free play and avoid “Stop and Freeze” coaching styles. Players are encourage to explore and to be ‘brave’ with their use of the ball. Avoid too much passing.
TECHNIQUE, TECHNIQUE, TECHNIQUE
10 - 12 YEAR OLD PRIORITIES
www.hollandiasoccer.com
Perfection in execution of
skills, combination
drills, application of turns, fakes,
moves
Introduction to defending, using
skills at right time and place, Q+A
coaching, problem solving
Demands on focus and
concentration, moving outside of comfort zone,
attitude and enthusiasm, challenges
Work to rest ratios in games and drills, CNS
training for speed and reactions,
strength on the ball
Applied technique is skill. Emphasis is on where and when to use skills in relation to the game situation. Principles of play are introduced. Defenders are live and real in most cases. Players start to select preferred positions. Avoid total specialization too early. Keep refining technique. Coaching style varies more with more Q+A to test knowledge and challenge.
TECHNIQUE TO SKILL
13 - 15 YEAR OLD PRIORITIES
www.hollandiasoccer.com
Continued refinement of
technique, “stacking” of
moves and fakes, highly
competitive SSG
Possession games and SSG where
players learn roles and
responsibilities. Introduction of
combination play
Demands for responsibility, concentration,
focus and attitude.
Leadership and taking initiative. Fast transition
Physical competitiveness 1v1, use of work to rest ratio and
field size to increase physical
demands. Win duels 1v1
Attention needs to be paid to the physical changes that occur during and after puberty. Training is adjusted to suit. The changes are physical, social and emotional. Speed, explosiveness, stamina and agility are developed, using appropriate work to rest ratios. Technical and tactical development continues to be refined.
TECHNIQUE, TACTICS COMBINED
16 - 18 YEAR OLD PRIORITIES
www.hollandiasoccer.com
Extended possession
games, tiki-taka. Ability to hit long
diagonals and shoot with
power. Dealing with aerial situations.
Specialization in positional play, playing to win, understanding
team, small group tactics. Game plans,
managing the game.
Players understand
where they fit and how they can
make a difference. Positional discipline, element of
winning
Strength training with weight and
machines. Encouraged to
compete physically in all
activities. Proper periodization
The culmination of training and development. Player should be ready to compete to win. Transition to 11v11 training and game play. Specialization of positions and regular roles and responsibilities are introduced. Mental attitude towards competing and winning is essential. Lifestyle choices should be good based on prior training.
TRAINING TO COMPETE, TRAINING TO WIN
KEY SKILLS AND ATTRIBUTES
• Focus on fundamentals that allow the player to become competent, confident, creative and intelligent within the game.
• Passing is the easy part, being competent and comfortable with the ball is more difficult. Many coaches train creativity out of young players by focusing too early on passing patterns and team play.
