AGM 2014 Report

Grant FindlayChairperson Committee of Management KCLC

Chairperson’s Report Just a year ago we acknowledged Leah McNulty, our incumbent CEO, at the AGM for 2013. After a hand over period with Sue Solly, Leah took up her position shortly after. The process of recruiting a new CEO was a significant undertaking of the COM. We were pleased to see Leah in this role.

2014 has been a busy year, full of change with plenty of positives to report. The KCLC Graduation Ceremony is a highlight each year and this year was no exception. It was a pleasure to see how proud graduands were as they took to the stage to accept their certificate, which of course is a symbol of their personal achievement. What makes KCLC unique as an organisation is the combination of services and facilities that come under the KCLC umbrella. It is with great pleasure that the COM receive reports of positive outcomes from many areas. The Community Garden was officially opened in February. KCLC became a major sponsor of the Kyabram District Football Netball League which gave us a profile in this particular sector of the Community. There was a significant Exhibition in April. ‘A Step Back in Time’ included Isobel Harvie’s 1900 to 1960 dress collection. Patchwork, art and vintage cars were also exhibited. The Childcare graduation and Christmas event was also a success. Excellent activities were delivered through the Neighbourhood House and there were high enrolments in a wide range of training courses and certificates.

During the reporting period Michael Staalkjaer confirmed that he would not continue his role as Treasurer of the COM and indeed as a member of the COM. Michael joined the COM in 2003 having initial contact with KCLC through Childcare. Michael was Treasurer since 2005 but contributed widely to KCLC. The COM appreciate and acknowledge Michael’s contribution. The role of treasurer has not been filled since Michael stepped down, instead the whole COM agreed to take shared responsibility for the finance reports presented each meeting.

There will be some surprise at the bottom line of the financial report presented in this report. Some of our losses are explained through amortisation of our assets. It was considered an important adjust-ment towards a more realistic picture of our situation. The report also shows that our cash reverses continue a downward trend. This has been the result of decreasing training revenue and increased personnel costs - a situation that the COM could not afford to ignore. An ACFE supported review was carried out by Grant Thornton Australia.

Following, this further funding enabled us to engage consulting firm CWCC to provide advice about moving through the short term and becom-ing sustainable into the future. A key element of the plan adopted by the COM was a restructure of our organisation. CWCC prepared a report for KCLC in November and based on this suggested several models for structuring KCLC into the future. The model was developed over time and designed to suit the needs of our unique organisation. The COM was aware that the adopted structure would place staff of KCLC under some considerable pressure. We knew it would be a difficult time but we were convinced of the need to go through such a transi-tion in a timely manner. On the top of several extra meetings the COM understood, as the year came to an end, that there was the potential to lose several valued staff members into the New Year.

The COM would like to acknowledge the role of Leah McNulty. Having recently stepped into the CEO position Leah coped with a very steep learn-ing curve and worked tirelessly to assist the COM in this process. We appreciate that the leadership team and all staff have been put under a great deal of pressure and have worked to keep the organisation working well. I would also like thank members of the COM. This last year included several extra meetings and obviously some difficult decisions so thank you for your support.

Before signing off I would like to devote a significant section of my report to Maureen Atkins. Maureen has decided to step down from the COM as of this AGM. Maureen became a member of the COM in 1994. She served as Chairperson for 13 years until 2009. During that time Maureen saw great growth in the organisation, including the shift into the Lake Street site. Subsequently, Maureen was awarded a Life Membership of KCLC but has continued to serve on the COM until this time. Maureen’s commitment to ‘community’ cannot be overstated. Her guiding motivation has always been in line with KCLC’s community focussed, mission statement. She has been a dedicated member of the COM, offering great wisdom and insight to the Committee. In recent times Maureen has also had a role in teaching at KCLC and has done other voluntary work. Maureen’s presence will be greatly missed. We offer our heart-felt gratitude for her contribution and wish her all the best for the future.

RegardsGrant Findlay, Chairperson COMKyabram Community and Learning Centre Inc.6

CEO Report

It is my pleasure to make my first report as Chief Executive Officer. I took on the role in May 2014 and was able to work with Suzanne Solly for a period of 3 weeks, until Sue left to enjoy her retirement.

In 2014 the organisation continued the high quality service delivery that it is renowned for. Our Childcare service is highly valued by our community and has great participation rates from parents and grandparents when we hold events. In 2014 we took care of the early education needs of 74 children belonging to 54 of our local families.

We are very grateful to the community for this support and to the staff who do a wonderful job. Our Neighbourhood House delivered some wonderful programs again this year and our Family Support service supported those in our community who are going through some tough and challenging times. In our Training area we had 314 people graduate with accredited training qualifications and we hope all of those who have not continued onto further study are now gainfully employed. I hope you take the time to read and enjoy the reports from each area.

In the second half of 2014 I settled into the role of Chief Executive Officer and worked hard to understand the services we deliver, the staff we employ and the impact of our centre on our community. This involved me completing a review of the workings of the centre for the previous 3 years so that I could completely understand our

funding, income streams, service delivery and expenses. It became clear that the organisation needed to complete extensive work to improve our processes and systems to ensure that we remain sustainable for many years to come. The Adult Community & Further Education Board (AFCE) were very supportive of us as we acknowl-edged this and funded an independent firm to complete a further review of KCLC. ACFE further funded the organisation to engage a consultant to support getting the work required completed in an efficient and timely manner whilst also considering the implications of the decisions being made. This work will be continued into 2015 and will ensure our sustainability for the future.

I am very grateful to the leadership team and staff of KCLC for their hard work and dedication during 2014. I would also like to thank the Committee of Management for their support for the 2014 year and especially since my appointment. They have supported me, the staff and each other through some challenging times and have made decisions which will enable the organisation to move into the future in a much stronger and more positive way.

KCLC is looking forward to 2015 and the opportunities that we have to develop our services and engage with our community. We have some exciting plans afoot and can’t wait to get them working. I am looking forward to another challenging and exciting year ahead and thank you for your interest and support of Kyabram Community & Learning Centre.

IT, OH&S, Facilities

Change is the way forward for KCLC, 2014 we said goodbye to our CEO Sue Solly and welcomed Leah to our organisation. The years seem to get busier and busier, people fitting more and more into their days.

In today’s world technology can be our best friend, and technology can also be the biggest party pooper of our lives. We commenced an IT audit with advance computing to look at ways to move with the fast moving IT times. An equipment grant from ACFE allowed us to upgrade some lap tops and projectors.Regular upgrades to facilities and repairs continued throughout the year, I would like to thank Neville Beecroft for all his maintenance work. We continue to use Corporate Shadows as our security firm. Wayne ONeil has been great to work with and also does all the night call outs. Our day and night cleaners also reduced in July with Rachel Goulding leaving which left Nora who is doing a fantastic job.

Our admin team welcomed Michelle Messenger to reception after volunteering through our Neighbourhood House, we once again completed the administration for the Murray Business Network, MBN aim to strengthen the

business community, create a mentoring environment for young entrepreneurs and let business newcomers know that we are a progressive, inclusive and connected business community. MBN conducted four major networking events throughout the year each incorporating a high profile guest speaker. At each of our events attendees were encouraged to take advantage of the networking opportunities with over 100 local businesses and organisations represented at each event which overall would encompass almost 1000 guests giving KCLC exposure to a broader range of clientele as a Gold Sponsor. Marg works with the board to facilitate the smooth running of events with the committee. A huge thank you to all the administrative team for their hard work and dedication. The OH&S committee has worked hard to make people aware of OH&S and have reduced the number of incidents from 7 in 2013 to 4 in 2014. We welcomed Beth on board as a representative from the committee of management.

The end of 2014 saw many new and exciting changes for our organisation, which will make KCLC sustainable for the future.

2014 Childcare AGM

We had a productive 2014 at KCLC Childcare. Our numbers were steady which saw Children and Educators celebrate many significant Celebrations and Events: Chinese New Year, St Patrick’s Day, Anzac Day, Easter, Cup Cake Week, Dress-up Day, Grandparents Morning Tea, Jeans for Genes Day, PJ Day, Book Week and we celebrated Christmas with Santa, along with the gradation of children who will attend school in 2015.

Our Family Advisory Committee, a small group of parents, we thank them for their time and support, they contribute to our centre. A new fundraiser which was popular, was our Family Recipe Book. We asked children, families, Educators to submit a Recipe that they enjoy to cook at home. We raised more than $800 dollars which saw us purchase a large Kombi and caravan play set.

Educators attended a variety of different Professional Development: Makaton (sign language, food handlers, sustainability practices, connecting with kids, Vedia Besim our Kindergarten Teacher attended a conference in Melbourne ‘Together We Grow’, where all Educators updated their First Aid.

We had our Kitchen Audit in late May, and the year also saw a number of people and students do work placement and work experience with us.

The highlight of the year was when we celebrated Children’s week in October. We had a wonderful week which saw a number of people from the Community come and visit our Centre: Natalie from the local library came and read stories, Charmaine Parsons took Aerobics with the children, the local SES visited with their truck and volunteers, Kezia Talbot from the Fauna Park visit with some furry friends, face painting with Wendy Adessi, visit from Dental Technician Carolyn Coutts-Smith, and lawn bowls with Russell Locke.

I wish to thank my team Judy Parsons, Sevi Besim, Melissa Farrow, Vedia Besim, Suzana Besim, Chloe Chiswell, and Chris Willis for another hard working year. I would like to thank Tania Chiswell, for her ongoing support throughout the year, and surrounding members of the Community Centre. To all the families, volunteers, relief workers, and children thank you for a wonderful 2014

Marketing Report

2014 was another busy year for KCLC, with new marketing strategies developed to include advertising for Training in Kyabram and Echuca in magazine advertorials, Term Programs, Kyabram Visitor Guide, an Open Day, Careers nights - for VET in schools courses, Bush Market, newspaper articles, KDFNL advertising, Facebook and website.

Continuous marketing on Facebook has increased our page following. The inclusion and sharing of our own and community activities has assisted with this. In particular the childcare Graduation day and Jules created a high viewing by KCLC Facebook followers...

KCLC Training, Short Courses and Neighbourhood House Term programs returned to letterbox and roadside distribution for Kyabram and District for 3rd Term. This was welcomed by the community via feedback that we received. Enrolments in comparison will be reviewed in the 2015 Annual report based on this change.

Events marketed during the year includedthe Biggest Morning Tea, Cancer Seminar, the Official Opening of the Kyabram Community Garden in Lake Road, with community market stalls, jumping castle, entertainment by local schools, community groups and representatives from the Shire of Campaspe and Hon DR Sharman Stone, Federal Member for Murray, to officially open the garden. Over 300 people attended this day and funding and developments are still continuing from the Shire of Campaspe, schools and support from the Kyabram Garden Club inlcuding a plant out day by Bunnings including all participants above.

In April, KCLC was host to another clothing exhibition by Isobel Harvie - fundraising for

Warramunda Aged Care Facility. Following on from ‘A Stitch Back in Time’ in 2013, a new collection called a ‘A Step Back in Time’ was held over 2 weeks and another successful event. The display was supported by displays from community groups such as the craft, quilting and art groups and extended to the broader community. A vintage car display was also held during the display.

Marketing in 2015 will develop again with a proposal for a new look website and client base to extend further to increase KCLC’s opportunites of learning local for Accredited Training courses, short courses and Neighbourhood House community activities within the Kyabram and District community.

In signing off for this report, I wish to advise that this will be my last report, as I have resigned from KCLC. My Marketing position has been a very rewarding one over the three and a half years at the Centre. I have met so many wonderful people and involved in some many KCLC and community promotions for events and activities associated with KCLC.

So many doors have opened with amazingopportunites through KCLC and the broader Kyabram and District Community. I will continue to support KCLC events and activities and remain in contact with KCLC staff and Management.

I wish to thank KCLC Management and Staffand the community for their wonderful support in my time at KCLC and look forward to continuing my contribution to promote the town and events ongoing.

Training Report by Leah McNulty

2014 was a busy year as usual for training. We worked very hard for the year on making sure we were delivering lots of training. This can be seen in the graph below which outlines the total number of training hours we delivered throughout the year, a total of 264133 hours for 2014 an increase of 0.6% on 2013. We are pleased to have been able to maintain our training delivery in what is a very competitive market.

We had 304 students complete their qualifications in 22 different areas over the course of the year. We continued to deliver training in a variety of ways. We have trainees who are supported by their employers to train in their chosen career path. We have people who are training during the day in order to position themselves to access employment opportunities. We have people who are training at night in order to learn new skills which will help them in their current career. We have school students completing their VET qualifications and we have business who have asked us to train groups of their employees in various areas. We have people who are training as they are interested in learning new things. We have people of all ages who access our training and it is a wonderful thing to see

people of all ages and backgrounds working together and learning together. Certificate III in Aged Care was a very popular choice in 2014 and this is a reflection of the jobs market, where we know there is a need for Personal Care Assistants now and into the future thanks to our Ageing population. This Campaspe Shire is a popular retirement destination. Our proximity to Echuca and Shepparton and our wonderful local Aged Care services help support our local community ac-cess these employment opportunities. Our Foundation Skills courses are also popular and we are privileged to be able to support people to build on their basic skills which supports them to access employment and further training. Our workshop at 117 Albion Street has been keeping busy and we are looking forward to developing more opportunities here in 2015.

We are looking ahead to 2015 and beyond and working to make sure that we can take advan-tage of every opportunity that comes our way, so if you are interested in training for yourself or your staff come and talk to us. We’d love for you to join our learning community.

Carrie Pell - KCLC Student, Diploma in Children’s Services

During 2014 I was able to successfully complete a full Diploma in Children's Services. The course was easy to follow and the staff were brilliant. I needed the course to continue on with my family day care plans and was grateful I could study locally.

Here at KCLC, the classes remain calm and fun while still learning at everyone's individual levels. The smaller class sizes mean we get to make lifelong friends and help each other out all year. Such a great atmosphere to work amongst.

I would recommend KCLC to anyone looking to take on study, no matter where you are in life, they will do their best to cater for your needs!

Annual Report Family Services 2014Family Services has continued to work with 30 families across the region and demand for our services continued to increase. The Team of Leanne, Jenny, Lisa and myself have worked steadily to increase our skills to meet the demands of this work and have completed training to improve our knowledge of child development and trauma work.

The Kyabram Community and Learning Centre continues to offer us wonderful opportunities for children to participate in after school activi-ties and school holiday programs enhancing the work we do with families.

Working in a caring and supportive environment that meets the needs of the community has led to strong ties and I believe this agency and this team being part of the heart beat of the community.
