PROFESSIONALISING L&D THROUGH ACCREDITATION
The Training Foundation
Accreditation is defined, in the context of education, as being ‘certified or guaranteed as meeting required standards.’
All TAP courses are built around a set of competencies that are aligned to
best-practice TAP L&D Standards. These competencies and standards
are available to view on request.
What is ‘Accreditation’?
Historically, training has not generally been regarded as a profession but as something that almost anyone with subject matter knowledge can do.
As a result, many trainers have received little
or no professional skills development. Others have only attended internal non-accredited train the trainer courses. TAP Qualifications bridge these gaps as they are recognised throughout the UK.
THE BENEFITS TO YOU OF BEING ACCREDITED
w Benchmarks your service delivery to best-practice
w Builds your learners’ trust and engagement
w Enables a consistent approach for all your learning interventions
w Enables you to keep abreast of new learning technologies and techniques
w Heightens your personal ‘brand’ within the business
w Increases your self-confidence
w Leverages specialist external expertise to enhance your L&D skills
There are many value-added benefits to you in attaining reputable skills-based qualifications:

As with all professions, the need for Continuous
Professional Development is paramount in an
environment where business needs, rapidly
shifting learner demographics and technology
advancements are the norm. As with the proverb
that ‘a shoemaker’s children go barefoot’, the
skills of L&D professionals are often last to
receive the attention they deserve.
For L&D professionals the TAP Skills Qualifications
Framework offers a wide range of skills-based,
role-relevant modules. The central principle is
‘train when skills are needed’. This allows you to
apply what’s been learned straight away on return
to work, a critical factor in developing your skills in
order to deliver effective transfer of learning.
Just as critical is the need to ensure that if you are
a subject matter expert who delivers occasionally,
you also develop the right skills to deliver
effective transfer of learning. As time progresses,
you may also choose to upgrade to a professional
TAP certificate.
Learning transfer is only effective when we create
opportunities to apply it. Make the time to discuss
each course with your manager; explore how you
will apply what you have learned and what your
next learning step will be.

RECERTIFICATIONL&D professionals will recognise the fact that immediately following the attainment of new skills, those skills will begin to decay over time. The speed of decay will depend on a number of factors, including the extent to which the individual is motivated to use them; has the opportunity to use them; and is coached, observed and developed in the skill reinforcing them. We therefore recommend that organisations consider two critical factors in supporting trainers in ‘maintaining’ skills and ‘developing mastery’ over time:
1. Specifically, for design and delivery programmes, delegates are advised to consider attending a recertification event to ‘sharpen the saw’ (or submit their recertification online – see our website for details). We will invite delegates to attend
at three-yearly intervals.
2. Consider the development of an appropriate number of TAP Design and/or Delivery Assessors, who are authorised to recertify and coach TAP-trained practitioners and professionals against our robust methodologies.
3. We can arrange formal delivery skills assessment days onsite by a TAP Trainer, immediately post-training, to ensure delegates begin to develop ‘mastery’.
CODE OF PROFESSIONAL CONDUCT FOR THE TAP L&D ACADEMY This Code of Conduct encompasses the personal standards of behaviour expected of
TAP Academy members.
In positions of considerable influence through the roles they
fulfil, L&D Professionals have a responsibility to utilise their
specialist knowledge and skills in an ethically responsible manner.
The three core elements of the Code are Care, Integrity and Competence. The following behavioural standards are expected of all TAP Academy members regardless of their position.
CARE
INTEGRITY
COMPETENCE
- seek to engage the hearts and minds of their audience, inspiring positive
contributions and outcomes
- work to establish and maintain an environment of mutual trust and respect,
accommodating the uniqueness, individuality and needs of their audience
- act with honesty and integrity in all aspects of their work, declining involvement
with any activity that would compromise their professional standing
- uphold the reputation of the Profession, their organisation and the TAP Academy
through their conduct
- continually review and improve the quality of their professional practice by
maintaining the currency of both their subject expertise and their professional skills
- inform their professional judgement and practice by keeping up to date with current
learning theories and emerging trends in L&D, technology and pedagogy
