Registrar Issue 7 | September 2016 Training Update Chief Operations Officer update On behalf of all the staff at GP Synergy I would like to welcome the new 2017 cohort of registrars who have recently accepted a training position on the Australian General Practice Training (AGPT) program with GP Synergy. We are looking forward to meeting you and supporting you on your journey to becoming a qualified general practitioner. If you are a new 2017 cohort registrar, please ensure you contact your local Education Coordinator to arrange an induction Training Advisory (TA) meeting with a medical educator. This is an important first step where we discuss your past experience and start to map your training plans. Each GP Synergy subregion has a dedicated Education Coordinator (EC). Registrars are guided through the training program by our Education Coordinators (ECs). The EC team work closely with the medical education team to ensure that registrars are able to reach the Fellowship of their chosen college within the guidelines of the AGPT program. As we move into preparations for 2017.1 re-enrolment and GP term placement, I encourage any registrar requiring assistance to contact their local EC at any time. For registrars undertaking rural training, we have dedicated Rural Support Officers (RSOs) whose role is to help integrate and assist registrars relocating to rural areas. They can provide advice in relation to financial support available, local infrastructure and settling of their families into the rural community. Within GP Synergy there are also Registrar Liaison Officers (RLOs). RLOs play an important advocacy role for registrars. They provide regular advice and input to the program, as well as being in attendance at the regional advisory councils representing the needs of registrars in each subregion. The RLOs also represent GP Synergy at national forums with General Practice Registrar Australia (GPRA). We were pleased that several RLOs were able to attend the recent GPRA meeting held at the General Practice Education and Training Conference (GPTEC) last month. GP Synergy staff are located across 10 regional offices. We will have two new permanent offices completed by the end of September (Wollongong and Newcastle) and Canberra completed by October/November. Our Dubbo, Wagga Wagga and Ballina teams have settled in well and our existing premises in Moree, Chippendale, Armidale and Liverpool continue to deliver training and support. Each of these offices deliver localised education events. During the course of your training, you will hear from your local Program Support and Event Coordinators who are responsible for the coordination of workshop activities as well as office management in each location. Training UpdateChief Operations Officer updateOn behalf of all the staff at GP Synergy I would like to welcome the new 2017 cohort of registrars who have recently accepted a training position on the Australian General Practice Training (AGPT) program with GP Synergy.

2017.1 re-enrolment and GP term placement

2017.1 re-enrolment

All registrars are required to re-enrol prior to each 6 month term, regardless of the term type they are entering. This includes registrars going on leave, into hospital based terms and Extension Awaiting Fellowship (EAF).

Re-enrolment for the 2017.1 term will be open online via GP Synergy’s online training management system - GPRime2, from midday 27 September to midday 4 October 2016.

Failure to re-enrol during the re-enrolment period may result in delays to your training.

Please contact your Education Coordinator if you require any assistance at any time with the re-enrolment process.

2017.1 GP term placement

If you are seeking a GP training placement in the first half of 2017 (2017.1 term), please note the following:

• During the re-enrolment process you will be asked to nominate what grouping within your subregion you would like to train.

• After preferences have been reviewed, you will be notified of your allocated grouping on 6 October.

• You will be able to apply to practices advertising training vacancies in your allocated grouping from GPRime2 from midday 10 October.

Detailed information about the term placement process, including an extensive list of FAQs, grouping maps and requirements can be found on GPRime2 under ‘Forms, Documents and Links’ called ‘Term Placement Information for Registrars’.

Some important points to note about term placement:

• Aboriginal Medical Services (AMS) can accept applications from registrars in their subregion, regardless of their allocated grouping. Training in an AMS facility can act as a proxy to another grouping and go towards meeting training obligations. A list of AMS facilities in your subregion can be found in the Placement Portal on GPRime2 under group ‘X’.

• Registrars can spend longer than six months in a training facility. In doing so registrars must ensure they are able to meet their training location requirements for their subregion and any college requirements which may apply to them. (i.e. RACGP requires registrars train across two practices during their training).

• Applications for placements must be made through GPRime2. Placements will only be confirmed when GP Synergy receives co-signed copies of term placement paperwork through GPRime2. No other method of confirmation will be accepted.

Term placement webinarsTo assist registrars navigate the term placement process, GP Synergy will be hosting subregion webinars.

Curriculum maps now availableRegistrar education programs for each subregion education node have been mapped against the RACGP and ACRRM curriculum statements, and curriculum maps are now available for registrars and supervisors on GPRime2.

The maps are designed to help registrars and supervisors understand which curriculum statements are addressed within the GP Synergy education program, as well as where these are addressed.

As the curriculum is too extensive to be covered by the GP Synergy education program alone, registrars are encouraged to review the maps to plan their education and guide their self-directed learning.

The curriculum maps are also a useful tool for GP supervisors, and can assist in planning their in-practice education topics.

Laudable career change beckons GP Synergy’s Director of Education and Training

A change in career direction will see GP Synergy’s Director of Education and Training, Dr Graham Lee, step down from this role at the end of 2016, yet will continue with GP Synergy in a senior capacity.

Graham has decided to embark on a very significant change to his career. Next year he will begin study in theology at Bible college with a view for future in Christian medical mission work in Australia or overseas.

His expertise will be retained, as he will continue with GP Synergy in a senior medical educator position from 2017, albeit in a part-time capacity given time requirements for further education.

Graham became a medical educator in 2010, and took on a senior role as Director of Prevocational Education and Training (DPET) in 2012. In 2015, he was appointed to the Director of Training.

“Graham has done a brilliant job in his role as Director of Education and Training, during the most significant time of change in the life of GP Synergy,” says GP Synergy CEO, Mr John Oldfield.

“I am personally indebted to Graham for all he has contributed to this organisation and hold him in the highest regard. He has been integral to our success in winning the 2015 AGPT and OTDNET tender for NSW and the ACT, and instrumental in the implementation of our tender plans - juggling a multitude of projects and change management initiatives with the management team and others.

“Although it’s sad to see him step down, it is pleasing that Graham will continue with us in a senior capacity for the foreseeable future. We have defined a way forward that will ensure a smooth transition for Graham and for his successor in the role.

“We are delighted that his significant expertise will not be lost to the organisation, and I wish Graham all success in his chosen career direction.”

Applications are currently open for the position of GP Synergy Director of Education and Training ACT and NSW. For further information, please see our website: http://gpsynergy.com.au/about-us/employment-opportunities/

Invitation to participate: GP Synergy Reconciliation Action Plan (RAP) 2016At GP Synergy we aim to support improving relationships and closing the 17-year gap in life expectancy between Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Australians and other Australians. To do this we need to talk to each other about issues that come up and find innovative ways to create positive change.

One way of supporting this dialogue is to redevelop our existing Reconciliation Action Plan (RAP) to reflect the expanded network and functions of GP Synergy. A RAP can provide accountability, measurable outcomes and an independent and public verification of GP Synergy’s contribution towards addressing Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Australian disadvantage. We acknowledge the work of previous Rural Training Providers (RTPs) in NSW who have built strong links with their local communities including implementing relevant regional RAPs. To support genuine reconciliation at this new organisational level our RAP re-development requires input from a range of staff, external general practice stakeholders and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander representation. Staff, registrars, supervisors, practices and the wider community whom they service are now invited to engage with GP Synergy to support the crucial development and on-going success of our reconciliation journey.

The first step in this process will be an audit of current reconciliation activities and future aims. We strongly encourage your input by completing a 5 minute feedback survey by 16 September 2016: https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/X3G65T8

GP Synergy aims to consolidate existing relationships with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities through development and support of quality training placements for registrars at Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Services (ACCHS) and Aboriginal Medical Services (AMS) in NSW/ACT. We will deliver cultural and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health workshops for GP registrars, supervisors and staff.

Our Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health Training Strategy aims to support registrars, supervisors and practice management at our ACCHS and AMS to ensure continuity of registrar placements with excellent and supported training environments. This support contributes towards developing a well-trained culturally aware cohort of general practitioners who will service not only the NSW/ACT ACCHS and AMS community, but bring their skills in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health to their practice within the wider Australian community.

Please email GP Synergy RAP Project Officer Liz Degotardi at the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Cultural Education Unit [email protected] or call 1300 477 963 to indicate your interest in supporting the GP Synergy Reconciliation Action Plan development. We particularly encourage input from Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

For more information about Reconciliation Action Plans, you can visit the Reconciliation Australia website at https://www.reconciliation.org.au/

Aboriginal Torres Strait Islander Cultural Education Unit

To ensure strong cultural representation with GP Synergy, and support for Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Services (ACCHS) involved in GP training in NSW/ACT, GP Synergy has established an Aboriginal Torres Strait Islander Cultural Education Unit.

The unit has responsibility to implement, monitor and review the priorities of the GP Synergy Aboriginal Health Strategic Plan 2016-18.

To achieve the priorities in the strategic plan, the unit is taking a regional approach to managing and ensuring GP registrars and NSW/ACT ACCHSs have the critical support they need to maximise training experiences and outcomes.

The team has a particular focus on working with ACCHS facilities in the development of localised cultural health mentoring arrangements and supports for GP registrars in training, other health workers and administrative staff of the service.

We are delighted to announce the team now has its full complement of staff:

• Darren Green | Cultural Education Unit Manager - [email protected]

• Val Dahlstrom | Aboriginal Liaison Officer – [email protected]

• Graeme Skinner | Cultural Educator – [email protected]

• Christopher O’Brien | Cultural Educator – christopher_o’[email protected]

• Lucy Adams | Aboriginal Support Officer – [email protected]

Fellowship exam award winners congratulatedGP Synergy congratulates Drs Samantha Baker and Dorim Cho on their recent Royal Australian College of General Practitioner (RACGP) fellowship assessment success.

Former GP Synergy New England/Northwest rural pathway registrar, Dr Samantha Baker (pictured), has been announced as the recipient of the Tony Buhagiar Memorial Medal – a prestigious award for the candidate with the highest NSW/ ACT Royal Australian College of General Practitioners (RACGP) fellowship clinical exam score in 2015.2.

Samantha commenced her rural GP training with GP Synergy in 2013, training at Tamworth Hospital and Smith Street Practice, in addition to undertaking an academic post with the University of New England and being the official registrar representative for the New England/Northwest region.

Samantha’s long term plans are to stay working as GP in Tamworth.

GP Synergy also congratulates GP Synergy general pathway fellow Dr Dorim Cho on being awarded the Iris and Edward Gawthorn Award. This national award recognises the GP registrar who achieved the highest score in the circulatory and respiratory components of the Fellowship Exam (based on the ICPC system), over the 2015 calendar year.

We wish both Samantha and Dorim every success for their future career endeavours.

RLO update – Dr Bob Vickers

Firstly, welcome to the new cohort of GP registrars. Each sub-region has a Registrar Liaison Officer (RLO). We’re your friendly neighbourhood Spiderman (without the incredible fitness) who is a first point of contact for any questions you have about your training, or any issues you’ve encountered that you’re concerned about. The first thing you should do though is go to the General Practice Registrars Australia (GPRA) website, have a read through, and join. I’d recommend any new registrars apply to join the Facebook group “GP Synergy Registrar Network” as well.

For those well on their way into their training, there are teaching/education obligations for yourselves and your practices this term. If you don’t know how much education you should be getting or attending, or don’t think you’re receiving enough education, please check with your regional office.

From a GPRA side of things, we’ve been discussing a few things on our advisory council, from pregnancy and exams, to remuneration. You may not be aware, but the college(s) have in the past made substantial changes to exams for pregnant registrars. If this is something you were worrying about, I’d encourage you to apply for special consideration and see what accommodations can be made to make your exams less stressful.

I have been seeking quotes from a few medical companies for a bulk purchase of otoscopes, ophthalmoscopes and dermatoscopes. For anyone who hasn’t seen the Facebook group post and would be interested in a discounted price for any of these products, please email me. Once I’ve got a good sized group, I’ll post a link where you can place your orders.

GPRA runs webinars on a whole range of topics. The GPRA webinars for exam preparation and contract negotiations are due to start soon, so keep an eye on the GPRA website. If anyone would like to be involved in GPRA or would like to be an RLO, please get in contact with your RLO or your regional office. GPRA is always happy to have more people working on committees, which are involved in important issues such negotiating our contracts and improving registrar welfare.

If you are having any problems with your practice, supervisor, medical educator or any other concerns, please don’t hesitate to get in contact with your RLO. There is nothing too trivial or serious for us.

For those going to GP16 in Perth later this month, I’ll see you there! Take care of yourselves.

If you are in a rural placement and you or your family could benefit from some additional support, please contact your RSO.

What does the RSO do?

The role of your Rural Support Officer (RSO) is to:

• provide ongoing support and practical assistance to registrars entering and relocating within rural training regions (MMM3-7)

• identify, create and implement activities that support trainees to enhance their training experience and integration within the community.

They support you with things not directly related to your training, including:

• relocating and integrating into your new community

• information on financial reimbursements and rural financial incentive programs

• pastoral support

• keeping you informed about what’s on in your region

2. Travel and accommodation to attend compulsory GP Synergy workshops

A day out on the farmLast month, rural pathway Murrumbidgee & ACT subregion registrars kicked off the term with a visit to a mixed use farm on the outskirts of Wagga Wagga.

The purpose of the visit was to build a greater understanding and awareness of the physical and mental health challenges in rural areas - important as not all GP registrars training in a rural area have a rural background, and of those that do, not all have lived on a farm.

As farms are unique places to work and live, visiting a farm and seeing how it works (i.e. the type of equipment used, terrain and distances involved) helps rural doctors better understand the physical and mental health impacts on farmers and their families.
