Inspiring InstructionsFrom June 28 through July 12 we

enjoyed broadcasting our services live from the tabernacle with a limited audience present. Below are excerpts of inspiring sermons presented by ministers from Portland and neighboring branch churches.

Darrel Lee, June 28: “We’ve talked about how we are ready to cancel 2020. Everything is being canceled. Cancel 2020. But no, we are not going to do that a bit. We are not going to look back on 2020 and have it marked as a year of defeat. It’s going to be a year of victory, because halfway through, we can say at this point, ‘Hitherto hath the Lord helped us!’ A number of years from now, if Jesus tarries, 2020 will be remembered as the year God helped us.”

Tony Boyce, June 28: “We have a goal. The goal is to make Heaven our home. The goal is to be at the Marriage Supper of the Lamb, to sit down with Jesus, to be able to rise with Him and make Heaven. The beauty of that goal is that regardless of our circumstances, regardless of the things we find around us, that goal never changes. Circumstances can’t affect that goal. That mark is still there. That goal is still the goal.”

Harlan Lee, July 3: “We may have things in our spiritual lives that we ought to get rid of, things that hinder us.

race, mankind has tried to satisfy their greatest thirst with worldly things—the pursuit of money, worldly pleasures, treasures, entertainment. The world is looking for health and peace, but does not want anything to do with the Prince of peace. The world is looking for everything, but what the world needs is nothing but Jesus.”

Tim Mixer (pictured right), July 12: “Heaven is real! We read this morning in our Scripture reading a little bit about Heaven. However, there are a lot more things that we don’t know than what we do know. But what we do know, is that Heaven will surely be worth it all. We know that it is going to mean everything, absolutely everything, to make Heaven. We also know that it will be unthinkable to miss it. Heaven. Nothing in this world compares to it.”

Olusola Adesope, July 12: “In every area of our lives, over the past one hundred years, many things have been discontinued. But as things come and go, we thank God for the Gospel of the Lord Jesus Christ. It remains the same. The truth of God’s Word that was preached on this holy ground one hundred years ago is still the same truth that has been preached every year since then, and by the grace of God even this year. It has not been discontinued, and by the grace of God it will continue.”

When difficult circumstances arise, we want to go to our treasure and pull out things that will benefit us, not hinder us. We don’t want to pull out things like doubt, fear, or hard feelings. You need to get rid of those things. We want to pull out things like trust, faith, and victories that we have won. Those are the things of value.”

Wayne Butler (pictured below), July 5: “What a precious thing we have here, a place where God can command the blessing, and He will command it. What a thrill to think that that’s even possible. We can each individually, with the help of the Lord, do our part so that the Lord can command the blessing to each and every person here. When we meet His conditions, He will command it every time.”

Wayne Butler, July 5: “In Romans it says: ‘Abraham called those things which were not as though they were.’ Things that hadn’t happened yet but God had promised, Abraham just took them as though they were. That’s faith. I wonder, if every one of us had that same faith down in our own hearts, like Abraham, what the Lord would do in our lives. We already read that it wasn’t for him alone, but that it’s for every one of us as well. Thank God!”

Olusola Adesope (pictured left), July 10: “Since the existence of the human

Excerpts from Wednesday, July 8 Malawi District Superintendent Chris Nkhata and representatives from the Malawi headquarters church had the opportunity to visit two branch churches this past weekend, and sent this report.

“Greetings in the Name of the soon coming King. We thank God for His grace and divine protection under the current COVID-19 environment.

“We thank God for enabling us to visit our two newest Malawi branches, located in Nsanje and Maraka, near the Mozambique border.

“Our first stop was on Saturday, July 4, at the Nsanje branch where Pastor Danken welcomed us. We held a church service with a sermon centered on ‘Jesus, the Light of the World,’ using Scripture references from John 8:12 and 12:46, and 1 Peter 2:9-10. Though the congregation was small, there was a spirit of revival upon us, and a fervent altar service followed.

“After the prayer service, a meeting was held to formally welcome the congregation as part of the Apostolic Faith family. During this time we announced the intention, Lord willing, to hold special meetings in September 2020. The saints were overjoyed to hear this news.

“Sunday we traveled by motorbike (pictured) to the Maraka branch in Kembo Village, where Pastor Madi warmly received us and we began a church service. The topic of the sermon was ‘Jesus’ Royal Bounty,’ with text taken from 1 Kings 10:1-8, 13, and Matthew 12:42. The message brought out that One greater than King Solomon was in the Kembo village, who could answer any hard questions a person might have. Also, that God would give from His royal bounty such things as salvation, sanctification, the baptism of the Holy Ghost, and healing to those who would repent, believe, and do His will.

“The Spirit of the Lord was felt strongly throughout the service, and a wonderful prayer session followed. The chief ’s representative was among those who prayed at the altar and also the many who were anointed and prayed for afterward. The next day, he called to say he had been healed instantly.

“During our visit, it was formally announced that Pastor Madi had donated land for the purpose of building an Apostolic Faith Church in Maraka, and Brother Chris accepted the gift on behalf of the Apostolic Faith Church of Portland, Oregon. The congregation had already purchased twenty-six corrugated sheets and begun molding bricks for the structure.”

As we praise God for the forward movement of the Gospel in Malawi and look to Him for the safety of the saints there, let’s also remember to pray for the completion of the church building in Maraka.

When I was fourteen, the Lord spoke to my heart and made Himself very real to me. I felt Holy Ghost conviction for the first time. One Friday I called my Sunday school teacher and she brought me to church. I went down to an altar and prayed and asked Jesus to forgive me. He wonderfully came in and forgave me. Shortly after that I got a bunch of tracts. I read about sanctification and I read my Bible, and it all rang so true. I prayed a simple prayer and the Lord sanctified me. Then, I went through a few trials and I wasn’t able to go to church. I’m very thankful, though, that the church gave me tapes. I would invite my sisters to my bedroom and we would turn on the tape and listen. When the congregation sang, we would sing. The Lord came down so many times in that bedroom. Soon after that He gave me my baptism at a youth service. I can’t give Him enough praise for what He’s done in my life.

– Lisa Butler (Port Angeles, WA)

Next month will be fifteen years since the Lord saved me at a youth camp up in Washington on August 2. Almost six years ago, I was asked to go to youth camp as staff, and I said yes. I hadn’t been planning to go, but I’m thankful God worked it out and that He sanctified me there on Friday, in 2014. Thursday night is typically known as the best prayer service for everyone. I’m thankful that God answers prayer on any day of the week. It wasn’t a Thursday night for me, it was the next morning. I’m also thankful that we can kneel down at our couch after watching a service and for the times that the Lord has come down and met us there. I hope to be faithful to Him and see Him someday.

– Jeff Bishop (Chehalis, WA)

It’s been about thirteen years since the Lord saved me at a camp meeting during a children’s church service. I was struggling for a long time, wanting to get saved but fearful that I wasn’t going to know when it happened. When He did come down, I was totally sure. I’m so thankful for that assurance that God gives us when we are saved that He has completely forgiven all of our sins. Since then the Lord has sanctified me, filled me with His Holy Spirit, and blessed me in every way all through life. I’m so thankful for all He has done for me and I want to live the rest of my life for Him.

– Savannah Lee

My parents were invited to this church when I was about three years old. They came and prayed and the Lord saved, sanctified, and baptized them. Both of them are workers back home in Nigeria. When I was a bit older, I prayed and the Lord saved, sanctified, and baptized me. God has been with me through school, and He gave me a wonderful Christian husband. A few months after we got married, the Lord opened the way for us to relocate to the United States. No matter where you go, this Gospel is the same. Whether you are in Nigeria or the United States or in Canada, anywhere you are, the people of God are so wonderful.

– Tolu Adesope (Pullman, WA)

Our parents took us to church faithfully and there the Lord showed me His love, and He planted songs down in my heart. I wasn’t saved growing up, even though the Lord would call me faithfully. When I was going to college in Madison, Wisconsin, the Lord called me again. At the last young people’s meeting of Midwest camp that year, I prayed and gave the Lord my heart. He’s been faithful ever since. He gives me songs every day—there’s a song as I wake up, and there’s a song that goes through my head all day long. The Lord shows His faithfulness in creation. I love to look at the trees and the flowers and think how God loves us and He gave us all this beauty to enjoy. He shows us His love, protects us, comforts us, and gives us peace.

– Ellen Morgan

My life would be completely different if I didn’t have the Lord. I got saved across the street in the late fall or early winter and I got sanctified the next January. I didn’t say a word publicly in front of everybody, though. Then at camp meeting I got my baptism right down here. Brother Carver pulled me aside before an evening service and said, “You’re testifying.” I said, “Yes, sir.” That was a scary moment. But when you get your baptism, the Lord helps you do things you don’t think you can do. Every step I’ve taken in life, God taught me and showed me what to do. I’m thankful for this time we’ve been able to spend in the tabernacle, to remember what God has done. I can point to many places the Lord has answered prayer all over this place, across the street, and in my home. The Lord is so faithful.

from the graduates’ parents and a few grandparents were shared, each one with a a special message of congratulations to their loved ones.

Before the sermon, Katia Fedosov sang “Turn Your Eyes Upon Jesus.” Then Greg Bishop, from Chehalis, Washington, preached from Proverbs 23:23, “Buy the truth, and sell it not; also wisdom, and instruction, and understanding.” He stated that no matter where the graduates go or what they do, in the days ahead they will need truth and wisdom; truth to help recognize right from wrong, and wisdom to navigate the various circumstances of life. Brother Greg encouraged the graduates to compare everything to God’s Word to know if it is true, and to value the truth by reading and praying, attending church (or watching the webcast), and taking advantage of other spiritual resources that are available. He said that in life, each person will likely encounter situations that challenge his or her faith, but God has promised to grant the strength and wisdom to overcome every challenge.

To conclude the service, Sophia Sobol sang “Come Alive (Dry Bones).” Brother Erik then let the graduates know that there was a card and small

Friday evening, June 26, to honor the graduates of the congregation. Although attendance was limited mainly to the graduates and their families, the service was webcast so all could join in the celebration.

The music specials for the evening were provided by a few of the graduates. For prelude, Josh Friesen played a trumpet solo called “Gospel Medley.” Erik Calhoun then welcomed everyone and read Jeremiah 29:11-13, which says, “For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, saith the LORD, thoughts of peace, and not of evil, to give you an expected end. Then shall ye call upon me, and ye shall go and pray unto me, and I will hearken unto you. And ye shall seek me, and find me, when ye shall search for me with all your heart.” Such encouraging words, and great instructions for those embarking on a new chapter of their lives!

After Brother Erik prayed, Emmaline Worthington sang “City on a Hill,” then David Warburg led everyone in a few songs including, “Take My Life and Let it Be,” and “Sanctuary.” Then a slide show began with pictures of the thirteen graduates, during which Brother Erik shared the accomplishments and future plans of each one.
