Teach your children well

From the principal Hi everyone – Public Schools offer every opportunity you can imagine.

Public Speaking Public Speaking has been relatively new to our school over the last couple of years and it has been amazing to see how so many of our students have developed into confident and talented speakers. There are many opportunities for students to speak to an audience in class and in assemblies and I am very impressed with how even our youngest members can stand up and speak to a large group of their peers and family. The supportiveness of the environment enables students to have the courage to have a go, knowing that they will be applauded for being willing to try.

On Tuesday a team of both Primary and Secondary students travelled to Narromine to compete in the CWA Public Speaking Competition. The competition was very tough and all our students looked amazing and represented our school with great style. Congratulations must go to Cam Broughton who received a First Place, Nikeata McMaster and Bonnee Morton who were awarded Second Place and Annalee Ball who earned a Third Place ribbon. All students were a credit to us.

First and second places go on to the next level of the competition in Molong later in June.

State Music Camp Another fantastic opportunity offered in our wonderful Public School system is the State Music Camp for Vocals. This year we are thrilled to be sending SIX students to this fantastic camp. Some students are going for the second year and had such a ball last year they cannot wait to go again.

Big congratulations to Lilly Hefren, Tegan Hamilton and Jessica Mills in Secondary and Mia Gleeson, Bridie Hayden and Sophie Black in Primary. To have six students accepted to this prestigious event is fantastic, and demonstrates how our school values the Creative and Performing Arts and their power to develop self-esteem and mental wellbeing. We are very pleased that our commitment to the Performing Arts is extending in to Secondary.

Moorambilla Also congratulations to Katelyn O’Neill for being chosen to tour for four days with Moorambilla Voices. This is a wonderful opportunity for Katelyn to travel and sing with a beautiful choir.

Athletics Carnival Don’t forget that our Athletics Carnival is on Friday – this is a normal school day and all students should attend. Even if athletics is not your thing, the staff need helpers and we would really appreciate it if students who do not run, throw or jump could measure and deliver results for us instead.

Any community members or family members who could lend us a hand would be most welcome, or why not just come along and cheer.

Reconciliation It will give us great pleasure to send our dancers along to perform for the Reconciliation Ceremony in Narromine on 1st June. I know that Ms Skinner is reducing the number of performances this year for this wonderful group of dancers as many of them are in their senior years at school and we do not wish to distract them from their studies, but we feel that this is a very special and solemn occasion and that we very much want to be involved.

We also feel very proud that our girls’ photo was used to promote the event.

Finally ........ My door is and always has been open – whether you are happy, sad or mad. I need to know if we are not doing something right but I also need to know that you trust our motives and our intentions. Everything we do, every single day is for YOUR children. If we can do it better, tell us. Facebook is for cowards – so please tell us to our face!

All the best,

Anne Holden

Staff Smile of the Week (Week 3)

Athletics Carnival

A big thankyou to parents who have contacted the school and offered their help on the day, it is much appreciated. The day will kick off at 8.45am at Burns Oval with the first event to be announced at 9am. Parents and community members can find a program at our canteen. Please note that students are not to come to the school, rather meet us at the oval. All school buses will drop off and pick students up at the oval on Burraway St.

We look forward to giving you full coverage in next week’s newsletter.

Reminder Next week the Aboriginal Dance group will be practising on Monday learning choreography and new dances. Also, they will be travelling to Narromine on Friday 1st June to participate in the Reconciliation Ceremony. This is a new group full of fresh faces and we are excited to share our culture through dance.

Also, our Under 16 Boys and Open Girls, and Boys Touch team, will be travelling to Dubbo for the annual CHS Touch Competition. Students are reminded to return their notes and money to the front office as soon as possible.

Thank You This week we would like to thank Tori Cole, Reuben Stoneman and Mark Haines who have donated their time to help Mr Wright to mark out the oval in preparation for the schools Athletics Carnival tomorrow. Again, we are so lucky to have students volunteer and dedicated staff to support the great things we do at TCS .

SECONDARY CWA Public Speaking We had a successful day at the CWA Public Speaking challenge on Tuesday, with a number of our students receiving awards for their achievements.

Bayley Barber, Annalee Ball and Nikeata McMaster represented our school in the Year 7/8 section, competing against students from Warren, Nyngan and Narromine. All three students spoke extremely well on the topics “Things I Could Have Done”, “Space” and “Speaking Up” respectively, and the judges had an extremely tough time awarding places. A big congratulations to Nikeata who was awarded second place, and Annalee who received first Highly Commended.

Jessica Mills represented TCS in the Year 9/10 section, and received first Highly Commended for her brilliant speech on the topic “Speak For Yourself”.

The Year 11/12 section was hotly contested, and we were very proudly represented by Bonnee Morton and Shakirra Bock-Kemp. Congratulations to the two girls, who spoke on “Over the Hill” and “Fake News” with great sophistication and flair. Well done to Bonnee who was awarded second place for her speech, and to Shakirra who received first Highly Commended.

Nikeata and Annalee will now progress to the next level of the CWA Public Speaking competition, to be held at Molong in June.

Public speaking is such an important skill to possess, yet it can be a fear for many! It takes courage to stand up in front of an audience to be judged on both the quality and delivery of your presentation. All of our students who competed on Tuesday need to be congratulated on their speeches and the positive attitudes they delivered them with, they really did themselves and their school proud.

Cross Country Results

Our school cross country ran smoothly, with many of our students taking the event quite seriously and trying to win a ribbon. Running both short and long distances is great exercise for kids and parents should try to encourage a healthy, active lifestyle for their children.

Congratulations to the children who are all heading away to the Gobondery/NARRAF championships at Tottenham next Friday.

Unfortunately, Year 5 and 6 competitors who are going on the school camp to Canberra will not be able to attend the event (unless there is a rain delay!). The camp was booked in 2017 and dates could not be changed with G/N. Our sincere apologies to upper Primary students who show talent or interest in cross country running.

CWA Public Speaking A huge congratulations to our Public Speaking reps who competed on Tuesday in the annual CWA event. The children faced their nerves and all managed to deliver quality speeches to the adjudication panel and full audience. This was Katelyn and Zalia’s first experience in a speaking competition and I was very impressed with both of the girls. They spoke clearly, didn’t rely on their palm cards, made eye contact with their audience and both are developing their ‘pacing’ skills. The judge spoke at the end and said he was impressed with the high level of all the speeches, saying it was the highest quality ever! He also appreciated the children’s efforts of bringing humour and speaking ‘on topic.’

Cam Broughton has continued his winning streak, taking out first place in the Junior Division. Cam now goes on to represent the Western Region at Molong. Cam has very solid Public Speaking skills and we wish him all the best as he proceeds!

The CWA ladies presented each school with a quality, new book for the school library.

This is a lovely community event that we appreciate being a part of.

Mathematics At Home

We have lots of families looking for ways to get their children ahead in Maths. Having a good foundation of Mathematical skills makes grasping the more challenging concepts taught in high school easier for your child and will allow them to learn with ease. There are many, many ways that we use Maths skills in our everyday lives.

Adjacent is a list of simple ideas that you could include when teaching your child (excuse the Americanisms).

We have been looking at the art works of George Rodrigue and his ‘Blue Dog’ series of works. Children used this work as inspiration for their own blue dog painting. They have been learning art techniques such as blending paints, shading with paint, strength of line and of course using lots of creativity.

Getting a ‘Pen Licence’ is a long anticipated milestone for Primary students. Students who can write neatly across all subjects and aren’t reliant on rubbing out mistakes, demonstrate the qualities needed to use a pen in their school books. So far, nine students have received their pen licences in Year 4/5; Mackenzie, Troy, Connor, Shakiya, Cam, Charlie, Jock, Hayley and Brock.

Our division and multiplication skills have been getting a workout this term. Students are learning to understand and respond quickly to basic division facts. They are also using the ‘inverse operation’ of addition to check their answers. Most of the children are able to work out longer division problems and a few can also divide with trading and remainders. This is a challenging topic for some students, so families, please continue practising times tables at home. I cannot emphasise how important automatic recall of number facts is for children this age.

We have been brushing up on our use of quotation marks when writing. The students have been completing some revision tasks that include using quotation marks appropriately as well as looking at how something can be said. Some written tasks have started with a piece of dialogue and the children then use their imaginations to create the characters speaking and a story to accompany it. This work is a lot of fun and it’s really interesting to see the variance in student responses.

Congratulations to our class mates:
