A Message from your PRESIDENT Cary Spiegel Inafewshortweeks,TranquillityCampwillbeginits98thsummer.RichieandhisstaffwillbecontinuingtoteachthelessonsofNoblesseObligetoallreturningandnewcampers.ThechildrenwillbeexposedtonumerouscustomsandlessonsthatmakeCampsospecialtosomanyofus.Weformercamperswerefortunatetogainmeaningfullifeexperienceswhilelearningtolivewithoneanother.Weremember,celebrateandthankallwhohaveprecededus,butmostimportantly,webuildforCamp'sfuture.OursolemissionistosupportCamp.Todothatweneedmembersandleaders.Weencourageallparentsofnewcamperstojoinourorganization,whethertheyattendedCampaschildrenornot.WhetheryouattendedCampyourselforareaparentofacamper,youarenowpartoftheTranquillityfamily.WeencourageallcampersandcounselorstobecomeactiveinFriendsofTranquillityoncetheyarenolongerspendingtheirsummersinEarlton.Thatishowyoucangivebackforthewonderfulexperiencesthatyouhavehad.Aswelookforwardtocelebratingourfirst100years,wehavelaunched"TY100"forcoordinatedactivitiesandfundraisingeffortstosustainTranquillityCampasitentersitssecondcentury.Weencourageallwhoareinterestedinhelpingourcircleofdedicatedvolunteerstojoinusinourefforts.Comeandhavefunwithusandmakethisahugesuccess!Ourtworecentprojects,theInfirmaryexpansion/renovationandtherestorationofourbelovedTYBarn,arewellunderway,thankstomeaningfulandextremelygenerousdonationsfromourmembersandtheirfamilies.IlookforwardtoseeingallofyouonSunday,July31stforAlumni/VisitingDay!Wishingallofyouasafeandhappysummer,

The Chairman’s Memo Alan Abramson FromthetimeIfirstsawTranquillityasa10-year-old,55yearsagotoday,TranquillityenteredmybloodandbecamepartofmyDNA.Ithasinfluencedmeandmyfamilylikenothingelse.IhavewrittenaboutthemanywaysithasdonesobutIhavealwaysavoidedtheflowerythankstoallofourvolunteers,donorsandcampemployees.Ithasalmostfeltuntowardtodoso!Don’tpeoplevolunteerandhelpfromtheirhearts?Areobligatoryexpressionsofthanksinthisnewslettersincereenoughtoreallyexpresshowgratefulweshouldallbetothosewhogiveoftheirtime,savingsandeffort?Oraretheyjustwords?Ihavelookedatmanyorganizationslikeoursintryingtounderstandthemagicthatmakesusdifferentandwhyweneedtocontinueforthesakeoffuturefamilies.Ihaveconcludedthatthe“secretsauce”ofTranquillityliesinthevolunteerswhomakecampmorethanabusinessthathasgreatemployeesandagreatproduct.SurelyRichieLernerandhisstaffhavekeptthecampexperiencefunandspecial.Surelywehavemaintainedourbeautifulpropertyandbuildingswiththelargesseofourdonorbase.Withallthat,Campwouldn’tbeTranquillitywithouttheinvolvementofourfriends,alumniandparents,whovolunteerallyearround,whetheritinvolveshelpingatcamp,raisingfundsorcreatingandmanagingyear-roundeventsforusall.Othercampsraise“takers”.Parentspaythetuitionandthechildrenlearntotakefromtheservicesprovided.Atraditionalbusinessmodel.Tranquillityraises“givers”andas“givers”thepooloflifelessonsisjustsomuchlargerforthechildrenandfortheTranquillityfamilieslikeminetoabsorb.Soatitscore,weneedcertainthingstobeinplacejusttobeacampandtohavethefinancialsustenancefortherealworldrequirementtopayourbills.Butwhatweneedthemostistorememberthatwhatmakesusspecialisforallofustovolunteer,participateandhelpouthoweverwecan.Comingfromthebusinessworld,therewasatimethatIwouldlookatoursubstantialvolunteercomponentasashortcoming.Iwasabsolutelywrongandnowfreelyadmitthatourstrengthisinourbeingafamilyofvolunteersand“givers”.Mypersonalthankstoourstaff,myfellowTranquillity-ites,allofwhomarevolunteers,andthechildren,forteachingmethisvaluablelesson,evenifittookover50years.Here’stoanothergreatsummer.SeeyouallonAlumniDay.Howfarwehavecomeandhowfarwemustgo.Thankyouall,andmayourtalentsandeffortleadtocontinuedsuccess.YoursinNoblesseOblige,

SinceTranquillityCampbeganin1919onthroughtoday,everyboy,everygirl,everycounselor,everyworker,everyparenthasbecomepartoftheTranquillityfamily.Afeelingofbelonging,oftogethernessand“espritdecorps”developed.Eachgenerationofcampersbecametheleaders,trainingthenextgroupofcampers,muchlikebigbrothersandsisters.Theshowsinthebarnandsportscenter,thesongs,thespiritontheballfieldsandthesametraditionswerecarriedonfromoneyeartothenext.FriendshipsformedatTYremainedsolidthroughlife.Therehasalwaysbeenafeelingofcamppride,ofbeingpartofauniquefamily.WhetheryoubelongedtothegroupsthatEliasA.Cohenbroughttohislittlefarmin“Urlton”inthe1920’swhencampwassmallandcamplifewassimple,orwhetheryoucameinthe1930’sasTranquillitydevelopedfromafarmtocamp,orwhetheryoucameduringthe1940’swhenmanyofthechildrenwererefugeeswhocamefromthewartorncountriesofEuropetofindpeaceandhappiness,andlearnedtobecomeAmericans.Then,therewerethethousands,whostartinginthe1950’sandfor60yearswereprofoundlyinfluencedbythewisdomandguidanceofPearl.AllwhohavebeentouchedbyTYhavebecomemembersoftheTranquillityfamily.ThereisamagicaboutTranquillitywhichbringspeopleclosertogether.Regardlessofwhenyouwenttocamp,thememoriesofcampexperiencesaresharedbycountlessgenerations.TheTranquillityfamilyisspreadallovertheworld,however,oneneverforgetsTranquillity.Ifthenameismentionedanywhereandsomeonerecognizesit,eventhoughthepeoplehavenevermetbefore,aninstantkinshipisfosteredbecauseofthecommonbondthatisTY.OverthedecadesTranquillityhasgrowninsizeandstature.Wemayhavemorechildren,newandimprovedhousing,modernfacilities,etc.TheessenceofTranquillityhasenduredasweenterour98thseason.Wecontinuetohelpthoseinneed,whetherfrombrokenhomes,financialhardshipsorjustbeingabletobenefitfromouruniqueandrewardingTranquillityexperience.Onceagainwewereabletoofferscholarshipstomilitarychildrenasourwayofthankingtheirparentsfortheirservicetoourcountry.ItisthroughtheeffortsoftheEliasA.CohenFoundation,TheCharlesCohnFoundation,TheSchlangFoundation,themembersoftheCohenFamilyandTheFriendsofTranquillityCampthatweareabletohelpthoselessfortunate.YoursupportofTranquillityCampwhetherthroughfinancialdonationsorgoodsandserviceswillinsurethatTranquillityremainsinperpetuityaswasthelife’sworkofbothMr.CohenandPearl.WelookforwardtoseeingyouandyourfamilyatTYthissummer.“AlumniDay”isSunday,July31.WhetheryouareaformercamperorcounselororanadoptedTranquillity-ite,spendaspecialdaywithyour“TranquillityFamily”.Bestregardstoyouandyourfamily.

From the President of Tranquillity Camp Richard Lawrence Pearloncesaid:“Tranquillityishappytohaveyou,togiveyouagoodtime,totakecareofyou,tohelpyougrowanddevelopintobetterboysandgirls.Inreturn,weonlyaskthatyoutryyourbesttogetalongwithoneanother,toliveinharmony.Weaskyoutorespecttherightsofyourfellowcampersandcounselors.Wehopethatyouhavelearnedthemeaningofandwillpracticethemotto,“NoblesseOblige.”Rememberwhatitmeans–“becauseyouarenobleyouareobligedtobenoble.”Aboveall,wewantallTranquillity-itestolearntobeleaders.WehopeyouwillfollowthefineexamplesettoyoubysomanyoftheAlumni.Itisaninspirationtome,andIhopeitistoyou,toseesomanyoftheAlumnireturnheretothesceneoftheyouthjusttoreminisceabouttheirdaysatcampandtohelpus.”Thosewords,writtenbyPearlover40yearsago,ringastruetodayastheydidthenandallthewaybacktoTY’sfirstsummerin1919.Tranquillityismuchmorethanaplacewherekidsrunandplay-somuchmore.EliasA.CohenwantedTranquillitytocontinuefarbeyondhisownlifetime.AllofushopehewouldbeproudtoseehowmanygenerationsofTranquillity-iteshavedevotedtheirtimeandefforttoensurethateverycamperwouldremembereachsummerasthebestonetheyeverhad-untilthenextone.Followingafewyearsofreducedcamperenrolment,Tranquillitywasfacingacrisis.Noonewouldseriouslythinkofcuttingback,whetheractivities,foodorfarm.Whatever.That’sjustnottheTYway.Instead,thewordwentoutthatTYneededhelpanddedicatedTranquillity-itesansweredthecall.TheFriendsofTranquillityCampleadershipcalledforvolunteers,organizedworkinggroupsandchargedthemwithsolvingmanyoftheissuesvexingTranquillity.TODAY.Nottomorrow.Notsometime.TODAY!Well,Iamproudtosaytheycamethrough!TYneededpublicity.Done!TYneededtofindnewcampers.Done!Alldone,withlittletimetoaccomplishtheirgoals.ThatisNoblesseObligeinaction.EliasA.CohenwantedTranquillitytocontinuefarbeyondhisownlifetime.AllofushopehewouldbeproudtoseehowmanygenerationsofTranquillity-iteshaveselflesslydevotedtheirtimeandefforttoensurethateverycamperwouldremembereachsummerasthebestonetheyeverhad-untilthenextone.Tranquillity’s98thseasonisjustaroundthecorner.SheneedsyourenthusiasticparticipationNOWMORETHANEVER!NothingwouldgladdenourheartsmorethancheeringTYthroughits100th.But.Therewon’tbeatomorrowifwefailtotakecareoftoday.Getinvolved.Weneedyourhelp.ShowyourenduringloveofallthingsT-Y.Don’tbea“Schlemiel!”Tranquillityiscallingyou.
