Rinderpest
By dr.khaled environment ministry16
Transboundary sheep and cattle Diseases
•Rinderpest is an acute contagious disease caused by a genus Morbillivirus in the family Paramyxoviridae, subfamily paramyxovirinae.
•It affects bovine species )cattle, buffaloes( and wild ruminants .•The clinical disease in cattle is characterized by progressive development of shallow erosions on the
gums, tongue, checks, and hard palate together with serous or mucopurulent ocular and nasal discharges and marked development of diarrhea...
Collection of samples•The specimens (Biopsies) required for RP diagnosis from selected live animals are samples of
peripheral lymph nodes, gum debris, tears, blood in anticoagulant, and clotted blood (serum). All tissue samples or gum debris should be kept chilled, and transport media (PBS) contain antibiotics, Fungicide may be added to help preserve the specimens.
•For virus isolation, samples should be transported as quickly as possible chilled but not frozen.
•Collect enough carcass lymph nodes and spleen, tonsils in a separate labeled and chilled screw capped bottles and put in ice. Samples of affected mucosa on the alimentary, respiratory should be sent on ice to the laboratory diagnosis .

Skin Scraping
By dr.khaled environment ministry22
Transboundary sheep and cattle Diseases
Examination of MangeSkin Scraping
•A drop of mineral oil is placed on a slide, and a scalpel blade is run through the oil before scraping the skin surface; the oil holds the scraped debris
•Continue scraping until a small amount of blood is obtained because some parasites as sarcoptes and demodex sp. live in burrows and hair follicles
•The scraped material is spread in the drop of oil on the slide, and a cover glass is placed on the top•The area under the cover glass should be scanned using the low power magnification•Occasionally 2-3 drops of 10% potassium hydroxide solution is added for clearing the debris and
better visualization•If you are sending to a lab – keep in a covered Petri dish with a label containing the full information
•II- Internal Parasites •Gastro-intestinal tract parasites in Ruminants•Lung Worm Infestation•Coccidiosis - caused by Genus Eimeria •Fascioliasis – it needs a fresh water snail as an intermediate host•Ascariasis – infests chiefly small intestine of young calves, less frequent in older
animal
1 .Gastrointestinal Parasites in Rumminants The main GIT parasites in Ruminants include the following species:
•Haemonchus sp. “Large stomach w”.•Ostertagia sp. “Medium stomach w”.•Trichostrongylus sp. “Small stomach w”.•The infected animal lays millions of eggs that contaminate the pasture and water•The egg hatches outside the body •Infection occurs through the ingestion of the first larval stage•The larvae penetrate the mucosa of gut wall, where they form nodules then return to the gut lumen
for further development and maturity
By dr.khaled environment ministry23
Transboundary sheep and cattle Diseases
2 .Lung Worm Infestation (Husk or Hoose)•Adult worms live in bronchi and bronchioles where the females lay eggs some pass to trachea,
and coughed with mucus but most of them are swallowed to intestine .•Egg hatches during the travel through the intestine and voided with faeces as first stage larva•Infestation by ingestion of third larval stage
3 .CoccicidiosisIt is a protozoal disease caused by G. Eimeria in domestic animals and fowl
By dr.khaled environment ministry24
Transboundary sheep and cattle Diseases
•The protozoan usually invades the lining membrane of the intestine •The protozoan is round or oval shaped•Animals especially of young age and fowl with blood tinged diarrhoea should be examined for
Coccidia oocyst in faecal samples •Infection occurs by ingestion of sporulated oocyst
•Internal Parasites – Examination
•Direct Smear•Dilute a small amount of faeces with water and spread thinly on a glass slide with a cover glass•Examine by low power for adult nematode or cestode segment
•Flotation Technique•Based on the low specific gravity of most helminth eggs, we use solutions of saturated salt
)NaCl(, Magnesium Sulphate or sugar with specific gravity )1.1 – 2( to concentrate the number of eggs & provide a cleaner final preparation for examination
•Examination of Lung Worms •Lung worm larvae could be found by flotation method
•A simple method for sheep faeces is to place a few pellets in a Petri dish containing a small quantity of water, when the larvae rapidly leave the pellets and can be found in water
•In case of soft faeces, the material is spread in a Petri dish and several small holes are made by a glass rod
•Fill the holes with water, the larva will migrate into them from surrounding faeces
•Another method that can be used is called the Modified Baermann technique

–Anorexia–Weight loss
–Anemia–Decreased milk production
–Enlarged lymph nodes
Hemorrhagic Septicemia
Bacteria: Pasteurella multocida –Gram-negative coccobacillus
–Buffaloes are generally more susceptible than cattle
Transmission–Direct contact with infected animals
–Vomits–Incubation–1 – 3 days
–Duration –Hours → Days
–Morbidity:–(10 – 50%)
Clinical Signs–Respiratory distress
–Nasal discharge–Frothing from the mouth
–Pneumonia
–Septicemia–Fever
–Recumbence–Death .

Severe Lung EdemaSubcutaneous EdemaTreatment
–Antibiotic treatment is effective if it is started very early, during the pyrexia stage.

AINOMUENPORUELPAINOMUENPORUELP
Caused by mycoides subspecies –The organism survives well only in vivo and is quickly inactivated when exposed to normal
external environmental –Mycoplasma does not survive in meat or meat products
Transmission requires CLOSE CONTACT

STSOH
Clinical disease–LONG incubation period 2-3 weeks)1–Respiratory signs – cough, dyspnea)2
–3)Contagious bovine pleuropneumonia is spread by inhalation of droplets from an infected, coughing animal .
–Morbidity rate: would be 50-80%. )4–Mortality: ranges from 10–70 %)5
–Most of the animals that present with severe acute infection will die .
–CHRONIC disease – ILL THRIFT–Respiratory signs – cough, dyspnea
–Typical “marbled” appearance–
–lung – SEQUESTRA–Organisms can survive in sequestra
for YEARS
–extensive deposition of fibrin and a –SEVERE fibrinous

Transboundary sheep and cattle Diseases
large quantity of straw-colored fluid in the thoracic cavity
pleuropneumonia, usually unilateral
–Marked inflammation of the lung and associated pleurae. In severe cases there can be abundant fluid in the thoracic cavity
–Some animals, especially calves, develop septicemia and subsequent fibrinous arthritis
–In calves, joints may be filled with abundant turbid fluid that clots on exposure to air because of the excessive amounts of fibrin

CBPP – Control–Treatment? – may lead to carriers
–Test and slaughter–Vaccination
–Successful control of the spread of CBPP rests on removing susceptible animals
–Vaccination with live attenuated cultures – tail tip is best – WHY ????

Local reaction, probably due to the presence of galactic toxin. As a result, it may produce an extensive necrotic focus at the site of inoculation leading to skin necrosis and sloughing. For this reason, it is given in the tail tip rather than the neck ,
Contagious caprine pleuropneumonia
TransmissionDirect contact through inhalation of infectious aerosolsThe incubation period can be as short as 6-10 or long!Morbidity can be 100% .Mortality may be in the range of 70-100% .
Caused by a Mycoplasma and characterized by extreme fever, coughing, severe respiratory distress, and high mortality.

1-The principal lesion at necropsy is fibrinous pleuropneumonia with massive lung consolidation, accompanied by accumulation of straw-colored pleural fluid
2-Sequestra don’t happen
The pulmonary pleura become thickened, and there may be adhesions to the chest wall. Straw-colored pleural fluid may accumulate
