The PlusOptic C/DWDM range of Multiplexers are growing in popularity because they allow organizations to expand the capacity of the net-work without laying more fiber. By using C/DWDM multiplexers, customers can add extra Bandwidth and capacity on Dark fibre links simply by upgrading the multiplexers and demultiplexers at each end.
CWDM vs DWDM Both technologies are typically passive and don’t require power though active DWDM’s are available and increase the number of channels. CWDM was the original multiplexing technology and was introduced as a low-cost approach to increasing bandwidth utilisation of the fibre. Using several wavelengths of light and by increasing the channel spacing between wavelengths on the fibre, CWDM allows for a simple and affordable method of carrying up to 16 channels on a single fibre. Products are available with 4, 8 or 16 channels.
DWDM allows for the transporting of extremely large amounts of data traffic over metro or long distances. DWDM typically has the capability to transport up to 40 channels (wavelengths) by having tighter channel spacing and control. The technology is slightly more expensive than CWDM but offers significantly greater bandwidth on the single core fibre. The PlusOptic DWDM range has a 20 Channel and 40 Channel model available
Specialised Transceivers are required to be used in conjunction with Multiplexers. When you purchase a DWDM or CWDM Multiplexer they work as a pair so you will always require two.
There is an option to select a Single Core or a Dual Core Multiplexer. A Dual Core Mux uses two Fibre Strands one for the TX and the other for RX. A Single Core Multiplexer Uses One Fibre Strand to Transmit and Receive.
