What is a Credit?
•Units, credits, Carnegie units are all interchangeable
•Measure of time a student has spent on a course
•NOT a measure of quality of work
Determining Credits:
•Set your family’s credit standard:1 credit = 45 min./day x 180 days = 135 hours per year
½ credit = 67.5 hours per year
1 credit = 50 min./day x 180 days = 150 hours per year
1 credit = 55 min./day x 180 days = 165 hours per year
1 credit = 60 min./day x 180 days = 180 hours per year

How to Calculate GPA
The Dictionary definition of grade point average is:"a method of computing a numerical value for letter grades received in school by assigning each a numeric value and averaging the numbers."
*Yearly GPA *Cumulative GPA
How to Calculate the Yearly GPA
1. Convert letter grades to points.A = 4 points B = 3 points C= 2 points D= 1 point
2. Multiply the points by the number of credits a course earnedExample 1: Student receives an “A” in Algebra which earned her 1
creditMultiply 4 points by 1 credit = 4 pointsExample 2: Student receives a “B” in PE which earned her ½ creditMultiply 3 points by ½ credit – 1.5 points
3. Continue doing this for each course4. Total the points for all the courses in a year and divide by the total
credits earned that same year. This is the total GPA for that year.
