TheTransfer Scholarship Guide for MarylandCommunity College Studentsassists transfer students in
identifying and obtaining scholarships at four- yearinstitutions. This guide is produced by the MarylandCommunity College Financial Aid Directors with support fromSallie Mae, Inc., and cooperation from the Office of Student
Financial Assistance (Maryland Higher EducationCommission), and Maryland Association of Community
Colleges. The information in the guide was provided by four-year institutions and is subject to change. If a school is notlisted in the guide, contact the Admissions or Financial Aid
Office at that school directly to ask about transferscholarships.

Begin searching for scholarshipsuse online resources.
Dont forget to check for Maryland State grants at
www.mhec.state.md.us.
Visit the four-year institutions of your choice; arrange a
campus tour and speak to an admissions counselor.Complete and mail the application form with the
application fee before the colleges deadline.Apply for institutional scholarships from your transfer
college. Continue other scholarship searches.
Request all transcripts (high school and all colleges
attended) and send them to the transfer colleges. You
will also need to request a final copy of your transcript
from HCC after you have completed all required
coursework.Complete and send the Free Application for FederalStudent Aid (FAFSA) by March 1 for the following
academic year. Available at www.fafsa.ed.gov.Make an appointment with the department advisor at
your chosen transfer college to discuss your major and
plan your course of study.Participate in your college's orientation program. You
may be required to take placement tests at your transfer
institution. These are often given during orientation.

Electronic Tool for Transfer Students
ARTSYS is a computerized data information system which informs students andadvisors at a community college about the transferability of each communitycollege course.
In addition to providing information on course transferability, the programprovides, in community college course numbers, the recommended courses fortransfer to specific programs of study at participating four-year institutions.
With the ARTSYS program, students enter their transcripts into the system todetermine the transferability of their courses to one or more institutions. Forinformation, contact the transfer advisor on your community college campus.
Transfer Glossary
Credit Hour: One semester hour of credit is awarded for a minimum of 15 hours(50 minutes each) of actual class time; for 30 hours of laboratory time; or for 45hours of instructional situations such as practice, internships, and cooperativeeducation placements. (For example, a 3-credit lecture course meets for 45hours usually two or three times per week for 15 weeks.)
Native Student: A student whose initial college enrollment was at a giveninstitution of higher education and who has not ever transferred to anotherinstitution.
Receiving Institution: The institution of higher education to which a transferstudent currently desires to enroll or has enrolled.
Recommended Transfer Program: A planned program of courses, including bothgeneral education and courses in the major, taken at a community college whichis applicable to a Bachelors degree program at a receiving institution. Ordinarily,transfer credits are limited to half the Bachelors degree program requirements.
Sending Institution: The previous institution of higher education at which atransfer student earned transferable, academic credit.
Transfer Student: A student entering an institution for the first time withtransferable, academic credit earned at another college.
