Welcome to the 2019 Transforming Learning Summit! We're pleased to bring the state's education community together for a day focused on advancing learning and sharing of best practices.

Learning is at the heart of education. Transforming learning requires students and educators to see themselves as learners and discover new ways to "learn to learn". The Transforming Learning Summit will support this effort by offering content, dialogue and resources that will enhance learning across educational settings and functions, and lead to improvements in learning outcomes.

We hope you enjoy the day, make new connections and commitments, and leave inspired, engaged and informed!

Keynote Speaker Softening the Edges

Sometimes, despite our best intentions and dedicated work, our assessment practices can provide challenges for both our students and ourselves. This keynote explores assessment in a new way, using the analogies of hard and soft edges. We will reflect on ways the “edges” of our assessment practices make or break relationships and the learning these relationships are intended to support within a classroom setting. In order to refine our assessment practices, we will explore the ways strong assessment design can “soften the edges” for educators and learners by attending to the needs of everyone involved in the assessment conversation.

Don’t miss Katie’s breakout sessions Learning to Soften the Hard Edges and The Power of a Learning Continuum.

Katie White is Coordinator of Learning for the North East School Division in Saskatchewan, Canada and an author and Assessment Associate for Solution Tree, in addition to being an independent educational consultant. With more than 25 years of experience in education, she has been a system leader, an administrator, a learning coach, and a K–12 classroom teacher. She has contributed to assessment literature in the field and has helped develop multiple supports for facilitators of school-based professional learning. Her blog, Just Thinking Out Loud…provides perspectives on multiple aspects of leadership, teaching, and learning. She has written the following books: Softening the Edges: Assessment Practices That Honor K–12 Teachers and Learners and Unlocked: Assessment as the Key to Everyday Creativity in the Classroom. She received a Bachelor of Education and Master of Education in Curriculum Studies from the University of Saskatchewan.

This talk will motivate and inspire educators to recognize all the potential changes that are under their control to create healthy learning environments that promote student engagement, wellbeing, and performance and promote more equitable outcomes for all.

Don’t miss Clay's breakout session Recipe for Creating Healthy Environments that Promote Student Engagement, Wellbeing and Performance.

Dr. Clay Cook is the John and Nancy Peyton Faculty Fellow in Child and Adolescent Wellbeing at the University of Minnesota and Associate Professor in the School Psychology Program. He has extensive research and practical experiences involving the implementation of multi-tiered systems of support to promote children’s mental and behavioral health. He co-founded the School Mental Health Assessment, Research and Training (SMART) Center at the University of Washington and is a core faculty member who helps direct the Institute of Translational Research in Children’s Mental Health at the University of Minnesota. He has received over 10 million dollars in external grant funding from multiple agencies and foundations. In addition to his research, he consults with several school systems throughout the US to integrate a continuum of social, emotional, and behavioral supports to enhance student academic and life success.

27. PLAYMAKERS: LEADING A CULTURE OF ASSESSMENTLEADERSHIP / PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENTSpeakers: Angie Freese, Founder, Playmakers LLCThe demands of building and district leaders are extraordinarily high. As we attempt to maintain balance of the varied, demanding roles of our positions, how can we remain diligent to our duty of ensuring high levels of learning for every child? We can best leverage our efforts when we create a balanced system of assessment and embed time for our teachers to collaborate around this critical work. However, building a culture of learning among the adults comes first…and is no small task. Come to this session to gain tips and perspectives on how to set up your teachers (and yourself) for student success!

28. RECIPE FOR CREATING HEALTHY ENVIRONMENTS THAT PROMOTE STUDENT ENGAGEMENT, WELLBEING AND PERFORMANCE – Featuring Clay CookSOCIAL EMOTIONAL LEARNINGSpeakers: Clay Cook, Associate Professor, Department of Educational Psychology, University of MinnesotaBuilding off of the featured talk, this presentation will discuss the recipe for creating healthy environments that promote student engagement, wellbeing, and performance. Too often schools adopt and deliver a single or limited set of ingredients yet expect to achieve certain student outcomes (e.g., akin to using only flour to bake a chocolate cookie). However, single ingredient approaches are insufficient to provide the full range of experiences and supports students need to prevent problems from emerging, promote success enabling factors, and provide the foundation for more intensive intervention to work for the subset of students who need them. Instead schools must focus on using a recipe that combines important ingredients together to produce desired social, emotional, and academic outcomes. Attendees will learn about the specific ingredients and corresponding evidence-based practices that bring to life each of the ingredients in the recipe.

29. IMPLEMENTING SCHOOLWIDE SOCIAL EMOTIONAL LEARNINGSOCIAL EMOTIONAL LEARNINGSpeakers: Heather Hirsch, School Climate Specialist, Minnesota Department of EducationThis session will feature a deep dive into MDE’s Social and Emotional Learning Schoolwide Implementation Guidance. THE POWER OF A LEARNING CONTINUUM – Featuring Keynote Speaker, Katie WhiteBUILDING A CULTURE OF LEARNINGSpeakers: Katie White, Author & Educational ConsultantWhen we are planning to enhance student learner outcomes, it is hard to know where to start! Learning is incredibly complex and each piece of the process holds a vital role in the success of the learner. However, sometimes changing one single aspect of how we approach the teaching and learning cycle can affect everything else, resulting in positive outcomes for both our learners and ourselves. This session explores the power of a learning continuum to impact student success and guide teacher planning.
