BACKDROP
Hope Foundation and Research Centre (Hope Foundation) was established in 1979 by Late Shri Pralhad P Chhabria, the Founder Chairman of Finolex Group of Companies. The twin motives of the Hope Foundation is to serve the society by providing medical heath accessibility to the needy section of society and to provide quality higher education and research in rural and urban India. Our Founder Chairman had the profound vision ‐ to transform our society through his entrepreneurial endeavour while being passionate about socio‐economic transformation through education and research. He created an industrial empire with determination and dedication and at the same time created institutions like FAMT, Ratnagiri and I²IT, Pune. Both these institutions exemplify his philosophy of “quality education at affordable cost and uplifting the needy students from all corners of our India.”
The Finolex Academy of Management and Technology (FAMT) (www.famt.ac.in) was established at Ratnagiri in the year 1996, an engineering college approved by the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) and affiliated to the University of Mumbai. The main aim was to bring technical education to the remote Konkan region of Maharashtra. FAMT has been one of the main reasons for the transformation of Ratnagiri and the nearby region into modern economy by providing livelihoods for many. The institute has flourished over the last 21 years and has been steadily grooming professionals and technocrats to serve this part of the country.
FAMT, which is affiliated to Mumbai University, is envisaged to be converted into a Deemed to be University to enable –
Industry & practical oriented education
Enhance employability of students in rural India
To establish industry academia interaction
To mentor more entrepreneurs than job seekers
Research oriented environment by creating ultra‐modern facilities & availability of good academic atmosphere by motivating the faculty & students.
To create adaptability to ever changing and dynamic technological environment.
Overall development of students to make them good citizens of the nation.
Special impetus on girl student development.

Philosophy:
One of the fundamental thinking, instilled by the Founder Chairman, is “it is our responsibility that nobody who approaches our institute is deprived of education for need of finances.” This philosophy has become inveterate among the Team FAMT. Scholarship schemes to the tune of Rs.5 lacs per annum have been introduced as financial aid to needy students. Further, all the social welfare schemes of Central and State Govt. are successfully implemented for students’ benefit.
Vision:
The Academy aspires to nurture leaders who are in tune with global trends, equipped with engineering knowledge and practical skills, and urged to excel in creativity and innovation in order to play their part in the technological advancement of our nation.
Mission:
To become foremost seat of specialized technical learning in the Konkan region.
To offer state of art educational infrastructure and facilities at affordable cost.
To inculcate in students, the culture of ‘Play Hard and Play Fair’.
To advance sustainable development in the region through opportunities for entrepreneurship and interaction with industry.
To create a generation of young professionals who appreciate in all its aspects the necessity of balance between technological advances and traditional values.

THE JOURNEY
In 1991‐92, Finolex Industries Ltd (FIL), formerly known as Finolex Pipes Ltd was established at Ranpar, Ratnagiri. One of the first industries to set up base in this remote area, Chairman was appalled at the lack of infrastructure and facilities in this remote place. While India was surging forward with economic liberalization, rural India seemed to be untouched by any developments. It is then that Chairman Sir decided to create excellent facilities in technical education in this area and thus Finolex Academy of Management & Technology was set up.
The academy was launched in 1996 with one branch (Electronics Engineering) with an intake of 60 students and the rest as they say – is history.
Highlights in History:
1994‐95 – Possession of land – Bhoomi poojan (23 Aug 1993) by Shri. Sharad Pawar, the then Chief Minister of Maharashtra.
July 1996‐ First batch of 59 students in Electronics was admitted.
Oct 1999 – Inauguration of the canteen by the then Collector of Ratnagiri District ‐ Shri Mahesh Pathak.
Dec 2002 – Foundation Stone of Admin building by Dr Murlimanohar Joshi, the then Union Minister of Human Resource Development.
March 2007‐ Foundation Stone of Mechanical & Chemical Block laid by Padma Vibhushan Dr. Raghunath Mashelkar, Former Director General CSIR
March 2009 – Occupation of Mechanical & Chemical Engg. Block – inaugurated by Shri. Ravi Pandit , CEO, KPIT Cummins and Shri Nanik Rupani, Chairman Priyadarshni Academy.
March 2014 ‐ Inaugural of Canteen Extension Building by Shri Pratapraoji Pawar, Chairman Sakal Papers Ltd.

KONKAN REGION

Awareness of technical education
FAMT has conducted seminars on Careers in Engineering and Centralised Admission Process for last 15 years in the different parts of Ratnagiri, Sindhudurg and Raigad Districts. As a result, students, parents and society as a whole are now aware of professional engineering courses, admission process. Before the establishment of FAMT, students of this region were compelled to go to the nearest metro or big cities for engineering education. They had to spend more on residential and other expenses along with tuition fees. Further, there existed an eminent peril, especially for girls, enrolling for engineering education. Parents were reluctant to send their daughters away from home due to family constraints, orthodox traditions and social aspects. The main business or livelihood in this region is fishing, agriculture (mangoes, orchids, cashews etc) and allied services. Most people living in this region belong to the lower middle class. As a result of the outlook of these people and paucity of finances, they are reluctant to go out of region and prefer to stay in his/her own city/town.
FAMT has provided an excellent opportunity to aspirants of this area to pursue engineering education near home in the same region at an affordable cost. As a result of this, 85% of total students are from Konkan region and out of that 30% are girl students. There are many cases where students from FAMT are the first generation engineers in their family. Moreover, many girl students of fishermen community are the only females in their entire family / group to takeup any form of higher and technical education.
Opportunity for higher studies and placements
Many of our alumni have completed their Masters in Engineering at FAMT (ME‐Machine Design) as well as other courses at various reputed colleges in India and abroad. Ms Manasi Kelkar (from Ratnagiri), an alumnus of 2014 batch of Electronics and Telecommunication Engineering has done MS from New York University and is now working for the Bank of
America. She offers assistance to FAMT students going to USA for first time.
Students of this area have received exposure to multinationals in IT, manufacturing, service sector etc. in the form of employment. Many of such students have now settled in metro cities in India and abroad at higher positions in various companies.
Many students of this area have become entrepreneurs and have turned into job providers by creating jobs for the people of this region. Mr Mandar Bhise (alumni of Mechanical Engineering) has established 3 automobile workshops in Sindhudurg district. Recently, Mr Neeraj Magnani was awarded the “Shri Pralhad P Chhabria Memorial Award for Entrepreneurship” by the Higher Education Forum, Mumbai.

Economy
Direct Employment ‐ With the establishment of FAMT, there has been a direct creation of employment for various categories. Out of the existing 180 employees, nearly 70% employees are from Konkan Region. Many of these employees have been working with FAMT since the last 15‐20 years.
Indirect Employment ‐ Around 40% of the total students studying at FAMT, live in the Ratnagiri city on a rental basis. This has created a very good opportunity for local residents in terms of renting out their premises. People in the nearby areas of FAMT have created residential facilities in the areas around the college to cater to the needs of our students. They also provide boarding services to these students. It has become a stable and permanent source of income to these families. Further, essential services like laundry, catering provide opportunity to the unskilled labour.
Local Market ‐ Allied service providers like hotels, theatres, stationery and other suppliers in local market are benefitted largely because of the influx of the student community who are their potential customers. Suppliers of computers, internet service providers, telephones, automobile, equipment, housing industry, banks etc. too have gained to a great extent from the presence of FAMT.
Social Aspects
FAMT’s vision is to nurture students not only in the area of technical education but as a good responsible citizen. Through various associations of students, FAMT is keen to develop a sense of social belongingness among students through various programmes like beach cleaning drive, blood donation camps, road safety drives, financial help to NGOs like Maher, distribution of educational material to poor children, supply of computers to schools, creating awareness of Digital India in schools and colleges, social welfare work through Dept. of Life Long Learning of University of Mumbai etc.
