Using this GuideDestinations and route finderThe front of this guide has a categorized list of destinations within our area. Each entry is followed by the route (number in bold) which serves that location, and the page number (number in parenthesis) for the corresponding route timetable and map.

The route finder map is provided to orient riders to the general areas served by individual routes. Page 3 has weekday routes and page 31 provides a map of weekend and holiday routes.

Route numberingMost bus routes begin and end downtown. Weekday routes are numbered 1 through 19. Weekend and holiday routes are num-bered 21 through 26.

Suffixes on routes are used as follows: D stands for direct route(fast, few stops, usually serve park & ride locations and shop-ping centers). N stands for night route. Letters such as A and B indicate an alternate route in which the bus does something different, such as serving an area only during peak times.

Tips for using RPT:There are four quadrants to Rochester; NW, NE, SW and SE. Broadway is the dividing line for east and west Center Street is the dividing line for north and south. Example: If you’re west of Broadway and north of Center Street you would be in northwest Rochester. Most bus routes begin and end downtown. Weekday routes are numbered 1 through 19. Saturday routes are numbered 21 through 26.

A lettered symbol {figure a.} on the map is a timetable stop. It represents a major stop in the corresponding timetable {figure b.} for the route. A star represents the downtown transfer station. A timetable stop with a car symbol {figure c.} above or below it indicates a ‘Park & Ride’ stop. Small numbers in hexagons {figure d.} represent other places along the route that the bus may not directly stop at but may still be of interest to riders.

A small white dot on the route {figure e.} represents a bus stop. Thetimetable lists only some of the major stops to help you estimate whattime you need to be at the closest bus stop. A white diamond on the route{figure f.} indicates the bus stop has a bus shelter. A route break {figure g.}occurs when there is a large section of map where the bus makes no stops.These will generally occur on major highways where no additional turns aremade. Map will indicate how many miles the break covers. A section of routethat has a red line {figure h.} running through it indicates something different- it might serve an area only during peak hours.

Passanger Etiquette:It is unlawful on any Rochester Public Transit bus to: smoke, loiter, eat or drink, spit or litter, play a radio or other instrument except when connected to an earphone, carry any un-caged animals, firearms, weapons, flammable liquids or any other dangerous articles. Shirt and footware are required for all passengers.

Boarding the Bus:When the driver opens the door, step into the bus. Use the handrails for safety. Show your pass or put your cash into the fare box. Ask for a transfer if you need to take another bus to complete your one-way trip. Find a seat. If there are no seats, please walk to the back of the bus to stand. Standees should hold onto the handrails and straps.

Courtesy Seats:Remember to leave the front seats available for people who have difficulty standing and people with disabilities.

Bikes on busesAll RPT buses are equipped with exterior bike racks mounted on the front of the bus with instructions for their use.

StrollersOnly foldable strollers are permitted on the bus. Children must be removed from strollers and strollers folded prior to boarding. On board, children should be seated in a seat or with the guard-ian. Folded strollers must be safely stowed away. Do not unfold or seat a child in the stroller until after you have exited the bus.

Wheelchair accessibilityAll RPT buses are wheelchair accessible with a low floor design, wheelchair ramps and bus kneeling. There are two positions for securing wheelchairs located behind the driver under the front flip up seets. The driver will assist in securing the wheelchair. The ramp can be deployed for persons with walking disabilities. Please let the driver know that you need this assistance.

Right to refuse service All riders are entitled to a safe comfortable and pleasant trip. The bus driver is in charge of the vehicle and has the right to take measures to ensure the safety and comfort of the passen-gers. The driver may use discretion in preventing disorderly individuals from boarding or remaining on board a Roches-ter Public Transit bus. Examples of unacceptable behavior include: being physically or verbally abusive to others, being disorderly, violent or offensively intoxicated. Please report any form of unacceptable behavior to the driver immediately.

The new Route 191–Crosstown helps travelers to make connections without having to travel to the downtown transit center. • The Crosstown will provide 45-minute

service from 5:30 a.m. to 10:30 p.m. Monday through Friday, and 6:30 a.m. to 8 p.m. on weekends and holidays.

• The Crosstown runs in both directions (note the seperate timetables for clockwise and counterclockwise).

• Most routes will intersect with the Crosstown (18D and 2 do not).

• Fare for the Crosstown is the same as other routes.

• Transfers are valid for 90 minutes and may be used to connect two or more legs of any one-way journey.

• Look for CROSSTOWN CONNECTOR at the bottom of the bus stop sign to identify stops along the Crosstown route.

RPT Serving Our Community

RPT’s goal is to provide safe and convenient public transit service to Rochester residents and visitors. If we fail in any way to meet that goal in your experience please let us know. RPT serves over 7,000 passengers daily averaging approximately 25 passengers per revenue vehicle hour. The average ride time from most neighborhoods to downtown is 14 minutes. Ridership is expected to grow significantly with the continued development and expansion of Rochester. RPT can help in reducing congestion and the need for park-ing. RPT’s development plan calls for:

• Accessibility for all passengers• Continued expansion of neighborhood

service• Crosstown routes intersecting the radial

routes from downtown increasing ridermobility

• Improved passenger stops and amenities• Real time passenger information and

mapping with smart phone application• Continued fleet update and replacement• Monitoring and purchase of alternate

fueled vehicles for cleaner emissions andlower fuel costs

• Electronic pass systems

RPT Operation Facts

What does it take to be a driver for Rochester Public Transit?A lot. CDL class B license, drug and alcohol testing DOT physical, minimum 5 years driving experience, minimum of 76 hours of classroom, cadet and behind the wheel, vehicle operations, accidents and emergency procedures, use of ADA securement device, defensive driving, customer service, written exams and road tests, accident retraining, annual evaluations, and refresher training.

• On a weekday, there is an average of 7,000passengers using RPT bus services.

• 700 passengers ride RPT on Saturdays.

• During a typical weekday vehicle hour, there isan average of 25 passengers!

• There is an average of 2.0 passengers per revenuevehicle mile. (Weekday)

• 2016 System revenues, (farebox, bus pass sales, busadvertising, & sponsorships), covered approximately32% of all expenses.

• The current regular route transit fleet has 52 buses.The oldest are from 2003. Four new buses will arrivein spring 2017. Buses have a 15 year minimum life,weigh 27,000 lbs. and take 15 months to receive oncethey are ordered.

• Buses have a seated capacity of 38 and can accom- modate 39 standees for a total of 77 passengers. All

buses are low floor wheelchair accessible buses. Allbuses have bicycle racks on the front.

The shopper bus (route 55) is designed to serve various residential developments with door to door service to shopping areas. The route serves shopping centers on the north side of Rocheter on Tuesdays and on the south side on Fridays. Call RPT’s dispatch if you need more information.
