Transitional
Foreword
^H^^HimuH x1
My fellow students
:
You are now holding the first edition of the
"Transitional". We have chosen this name be-
cause we feel it is symbolic—symbolic, because
we are all in a state of transition : for the Seniors,
the change will be from their days here at
S.M.T.I, to their future lives; for the rest of you,
the change will take place here during the next
few years of your student life. Your ideas, plans,
outlook, and our own S.M.T.I. will form this
state of transition as it grows with the future.
As you go through the pages of this book, I
hope that you will be pleased with what you find.
If the "Transitional" brings back memories of
good times you've shared, it has served its pur-
pose.
At this time I wish to express my sincere ap-
preciation to the members of the "Transitional"
staff for all the hard work and long hours they
have given in making this book a reality. Special
thanks go to Professor Leo M. Sullivan, Carolyn
Martin, Ken Goulart, and Ken Barclay, without
whom my job would have been much more diffi-
cult. To the rest of you I should like to extend my
best wishes for a successful and happy future.
Sincerely,
L/U&&7C (j^Z^^S^

Dedication
It is indeed a sad occasion for the Class of 1965 to dedi-
cate the TRANSITIONAL to a classmate whom we all ad-
mired, respected, and loved. When Leonora Ciistodio died
on March 17, 1964, something died in each of us—some-
thing hard to find—true friendship.
Lea knew a secret that few of us know—she knew how
to live. She lived in a day what most people live in a year.
She enjoyed the rain as well as the sunshine ; she knew how
to love and how to be loved; and even though her tomor-
rows are ended, her yesterdays may far outweigh our to-
morrows.
Her studies and a part-time job did not curtail her ac-
tivities: as a cheerleader, she rooted us on to victory; as a
member of Chi Delta Phi, she was a sister to us all ; and as a
Newman Club officer, she was a true child of God.
Time may help to soften the sorrow of losing her, but
Time can never erase the joy of having known her.

President's Message
To the Graduating Class of '65:
The academic year 1964-1965 has been one of fundamental transition at SMTI. Our school has
traditions which go back to 1895; yet, you are members of the first graduating class whose degrees
will carry our college's name. I am sure that you have been keenly aware during your upperclass
years, of the dynamic changes taking place within. Great structures are rising on our new campus in
North Dartmouth. Enrollment is accelerating. Many new faculty members are constantly appearing in
our laboratories, classrooms, and lecture halls. Excitement, hopes, and aspirations increase almost
daily; the future of our college is rich with promise.
I do hope you will remember through all of your days after graduation, that the greatness of a college
is determined more by its graduates and their achievements than by any other factor or combination of
factors. A new campus, new buildings, new equipment and expanding faculty, a great library, and all
other benefits we enjoy or expect soon to enjoy, are as nothing compared to the degree of honor, service,
and success you achieve from this time forward.
In your hands is SMTFs future reputation. Go forth, and with your fellow graduates, past, present and
future, tell the world by deed and word and work that your college is one of excellence. Take with you
my every best wish for a full, productive, and successful life.
Sincerely,
Joseph Leo Driscoll

Once again we are returning
: summer's vacation to begin
another year, this being our third

a part of Southeastern Massachu-:.'.! Institute and
we, the Junior Class, will be the

Since SMTI has two branches
it would seem appropriate to try
to bring these two branches closer
by holding various activities to-
gether. For this reason I wouldespecially like to hear commentson holding our Junior Proms at
the same time.
Also, at the Fall River branch
it has been traditional to present
a Ring Dance where the class
tings are received. We at NewBedford could also take part in
nee when- our rings are re-
ceived. I hope the class will keep
,i and give commentswhen this comes up at a class
Groundbreaking at S.M.T.I.
Brewing up another story.

Of course, I've been a good advisor.

TEXTILE DICTIONARY
for BEST RESULTS
in Textile Processing
Corobex (Kor 'a-bex)A durable anti-bacterial additive for textiles.
Provides fixed, lasting protection against germs, mildew, perspiration odors and other odors ofbacterial origin.
Easily applied during dyeing or finishing opera-tions. Will cause no shade change in dyed andprinted colors, no yellowing of whites. Does notaffect the hand of the finished goods. Compat-ible with most types of finishing materials.
DDlscolite1 (dTa^ko . lite)Concentrated sodium sulphoxylate formaldehydeavailable in lump, pea, rice or powder form.
A powerful reducing agent, stable at high tem-peratures. Widely used to effect reduction andsolution of vat colors, and for discharge effects
when applied to colored grounds. Effective whenmixed with vat colors and discharge pasteswherever the reducing agent must retain its
reducing power after being dried into the fabric.
Dispersal 1 (dis> pur/sal)A long chain ethylene oxide condensate in theform of a colorless, neutral, somewhat viscousliquid. Fully resistant to hard water, and misciblewith water in all proportions. A retardant andleveling assistant in vat dyeing.
Used widely as a dispersing agent in dyeingsynthetic fibers with disperse colors and for fastcolor salts and bases in Xapthol dyeing andprinting.
Effective in stripping to prevent redeposition ofthe color on stripped goods.
NNeofinish ( N e/. O , F in ish )
Non-Ionic softener dispersible in hot water, suit-
able for all textile fibres, both natural and syn-thetic. Compatible with all types of finishingmaterials, including resin finishes. No develop-ment of color or odor in goods finished withNeofinish, even in storage. No yellowing at timeof application.
Neowet (ne'-o. wet)Complex Polyethelene Ether in the form of a paleyellow, slightly viscous liquid.
A non-ionic surface active wetting agent, effectiveat all temperatures. Completely compatible withenzymatic desizing agents and readily soluble inwater. Contains 33 *4% active ingredients. Widelyused in scouring all types of textile fabrics and forgeneral wetting purposes.
Neowet X (ne'o.wet)Organic Ether Sulphonate in the form of a waterwhite slightly viscous liquid.
An anionic surface active wetting agent, effectiveat all temperatures. Does not affect enzymeactivity in desizing. Compatible with hydrogenperoxide and resin finishes. High detergent value.Contains 20% active ingredients.
Neozymes* ( n e£ o . zTm s )
Desizing agents made up of amylolytic, proteolyticand fat splitting enzymes available in the form ofcrystalline powder or liquid concentrate for highor low temperature requirements.
Neozymes quickly remove all trace of starch glueor gelatin sizing without danger of damage toeven the most delicate fabrics. For best results,
use with NEOWET to speed. saturation.
Parolite* (par/o . lite)Zinc sulphoxylate formaldehyde in the form ofwhite crystalline powder. A highly concentratedstripping agent for all forms of wool and modernsynthetics.
Completely soluble in water. Leaves strippedgoods soft, completely free of zinc dust and inmost receptive condition for further processing.Often completely strips goods where other strip-ping agents fail. Very effective in discharge print-ing on acetate rayon.
Vatrolite* (vat/ rcllte)Concentrated sodium hydrosulphite in the formof white crystalline powder. A powerful reducingagent for vat colors, ideal for dry feeding becauseof its free flowing, dustless character. Completelysoluble in water.
Effective stripping agent for direct, sulphur andvat colors on cellulosic fabrics.
Quickly removes rust stains from cotton goods-
May be stored indefinitely.
Available with optical whites and in bufferedformulas for high temperature use withoutexcessive alkalinity.
Velvo Softener (vel/ v o )
A highly sulphonated tallow in the form of acreamy white paste, easily dispersed in water.Used in general finishing of all types of textile
fabrics. Will not "smoke off" or change color in
high temperature operations such as calenderingor drying. Has no effect on light fastness of colors.
Strategically placed warehouses plus
company owned trucks add up to fast
dependable delivery, every time.
