TransLight/StarLight IRNC Award SCI-0441094

• In cooperation with US and European national research and education networks, TransLight/StarLight will implement a strategy to best serve established production science

• TransLight/StarLight will support usage by those scientists, engineers and educators who have persistent large-flow, real-time, and/or other advanced application requirements

Scope of Work

• Procure and maintain a production OC-192 circuit that connects HDXc’s in MAN LAN in New York City (NYC) and NetherLight in Amsterdam.

• Evaluate feasibility of a second OC-192 for L1/L2 production services for high-flow data and collaboration-intensive applications.

• Ensure that appropriate traffic monitoring, measurement and analysis are accomplished through NSF-designated partners.

• Promote and support availability to the advanced science, engineering and education communities who require ongoing transatlantic production services.

Opportunities for Broader Access

• NSF encourages Fednet use of these circuits – To partner with transatlantic Fednet

applications development – To assist in providing transatlantic Fednet

resiliency

• New circuits are evolving quickly– IRNC siblings in 2006, see www.glif.is – IRNC-paid 20 Gbps is a subset of many more,

at least 100 transatlantic Gbps

Details of IRNC IRNC TransLight/StarLight Transatlantic L3 Interconnectivity 9/2005

• First 10Gb: Abilene<==>GEANT L3 connectivity • VSNL Telecom OC-192c between NYC and Amsterdam, July 2005• Connected at each end to Nortel HDXc

– MANLAN HDXc in NYC– SURFNET HDXc in Amsterdam

• In Amsterdam, SURFnet connects HDXc to GEANT core router• In New York, HDXc is connected to DANTE-owned router and then

via Ethernet to MAN LAN Ethernet switch– 2x1GE from mid-July to 12 September, 10GE from 12 September on– Currently, DANTE is generously providing OC192 cards and 10GE cards

in its router to connect between HDXc and the MAN LAN Ethernet switch– This is an interim measure until cards are available to permit connection

directly from MAN LAN HDXc to MAN LAN switch

• NOC services provided by UCAID and DANTE• GEANT also peering with ESnet and CANARIE• Will support SC|05 trial between DEISA and TeraGrid

Details of IRNC TransLight/StarLightTransatlantic L1/L2 Interconnectivity 9/2005

• Second 10Gb: L1/L2 to US Cyberinfrastructure– StarLight to NetherLight, thence to

• CERN via US LHCnet

• London via UKLight

• Stockholm via NorthernLight

• Prague via CzechLight

– HDXc ports provided by CA*net4 and SURFnet

– NOC services provided by Argonne National Laboratory

– Goal: establish persistent lightpath production users

Details of IRNC TransLight/StarLightGLIF L1/L2 Interconnectivity 9/2005

• L1/L2 connectivity to GLIF (see www.glif.is )– StarLight switches can connect IRNC at L1/L2 to

• US: NLR (CAVEwave, HOPI, UltraLight), UltraScienceNet

• Midwest: I-WIRE, TeraGrid, MREN

• International: CA*net4, JGN-II, UKLight and SURFnet

– StarLight switches facilitate connecting IRNC to circuits on NLR, Qwest, and CA*net4 to get to TransLight/Pacific Wave, AtlanticWave, WHREN, GLORIAD, and CENIC at L1/L2, thence to• IEEAF to Amsterdam via MAN LAN

• IEEAF to Tokyo via PNWGP

• GEMnet to Tokyo via PNWGP

• NetherLight via CA*net4

• GLORIAD/CSTNet/KREONet2, TaiwanLight, AARnet, Mexico

• Huge infrastructure workout for iGrid2005 next week
