Transmission and Transformation of Motion
Transmission of Motion
The transmission of movement has the same type of movement at the beginning and the end.
There are 5 systems we will be discussing Chain and sprocket
Belt and pulley
Gears
Friction wheels
Pulley
Chain and Sprocket
The chain and sprocket is a system with a gear and a chain linking between them.
A very typical example of this a bicycle.
Motorcycles also work on the same principle.
Chain and Sprocket
Belt and Pulley
A belt and pulley system are very similar to the chain and sprocket system.
This uses a belt and a pulley to transfer from one pulley to another.
This is used in car engines.
Belt and Pulley
Gears
Gears move through direct contact between two or more gears.
This is also used in cars, but this time in the transmission.
Gears
Friction Gears
This is a system where two smooth gears rub together to transmit movement.
This is used in printers and printing presses to move the paper through.
Friction Gears
Pulleys
This is a system with a pulley and a rope.
It is used to lift objects.
This is the only system which transmits rectilinear motion.
All of the others transmit circular motion.
Pulleys
Transformation of Motion
The transformation systems change the type of motion that is present on either side of the system.
There are 4 systems we will be discussing Connecting rod and crank
Cam and follower
Rack and pinion
Screw and nut
Rod and Crank
In this system, the movement of piston going up and down causes the crank to turn.
This is used in car engines and steam trains.
This involves circular to alternative motion

Cam and Follower
This system involves a cam (an off center wheel) pushing a follower causing it to go up and down.
This is used in car engines as well as sewing machines.
This involves circular to alternative motion

Rack and Pinion
A rack and pinion are composed of a rack, a flat gear, and a pinion, which is a gear.
As the rack moves back and forth the pinion rotates and also the other way around.
This is used in the steering system of cars.
This involves circular to rectilinear movement.

Screw and Nut
This involves a nut being moved by the circular motion of the screw.
This is used in scissor jacks.
This is circular to rectilinear movement.
