Gretchen Asher, Founder, BeFab Revolution

Disappointed with both my menopausal skin and “anti-aging” skin care products on the market, a few years ago I found a team of

formulation chemists and began to formulate products that actually WORK for women age 40+, researching every clinical study of each

ingredient I put into my formulations.

While I was at a women’s business conference (summer of 2015), I sat with a branding “expert” for a consultation with my flagship product of an intended skin care line called, “BeFab Skin Care”. He proceeded to tell me that the term “Fab” (short for Fabulous) was not relevant for women over the age of 50 because we are on the road to irrelevance.

This single conversation changed my life and my business. I couldn’t let that thought go. Are women over 50 Fabulous or Irrelevant? For now, I have put the skin care line on the back burner in order to create a powerful community OF and FOR women age 50+. And with our youth obsessed society, we should be unapologetic for our wisdom, experience, compassion, beauty and unique gifts that IS the woman age 50+.

I still love skin care and study all of the trends in the industry. Skin care is one of the many topics I write about at BeFab Revolution. I will finish my skin care line, but for now I am committed to the community of Fabulous women age 50+.

You’re not getting what you think in your skin care products!

Did you know that in order to increase profits, most skin care companies only use trace amounts of active ingredients?

By law, any ingredient of 0.001 (or 1/1000th) of 1% should be listed as an ingredient. The cost of 1/1000th of 1% of an ingredient is MUCH lower than the cost of an ingredient, at say, 2%, 4%, 6% or 10% concentration.

This is very misleading to women!

We assume it has an impact and we can trust it. In reality, it’s a lie. A ‘trace amount’ doesn’t do us any good. But it does raise the price for the brand/manufacturer, due to the hype of that particular ingredient.

It’s all about the RIGHT active ingredients in the RIGHT concentration.Make sure you look for products which state the concentration of the active ingredients on the label or on their website.

Natural Means NaturalWrong! Did you know that there are no cosmetic

industry standards or regulations for products deemed “organic” or “natural.” Many companies

create their own guidelines and charge a fee for their “seal of approval”. There is no guarantee

products are actually made according to any “certification.”

Synthetic Ingredients Are Bad for UsWrong again! The biological impacts of any

particular chemical are the same whether it is isolated from natural sources or synthesized in the lab if the synthesized ingredient is identical to the natural one(s). Such ingredients work exactly the same. Many natural chemical/ingredients can be

harmful. Many synthetic chemicals/ingredients not found in their natural state are life-saving drugs.

Non Toxic & SafeNope, not so! There are plenty of ingredients in

nature which can be toxic that you DON’T want to use! Essential oils (used in many products) can

cause severe skin irritation. Conversely, lab synthesized ingredients (because not enough can be found in nature) are fantastic such as Matrixyl 3000®

which increases collagen production, Hyaluronic Acid, a powerful humectant which occurs in the

human body. Both are ingredients you want in your skin care if you are age 40+.

Bottom Line…

A product's merit depends on whether its’ ingredients are proven safe and effective by comprehensive research and whether the concentration and delivery of the ingredient is appropriate. 5

Alpha Hydroxy Acids are the best for normal-to-dry or sun damaged skin. They bind moisture and improve healthy collagen production and smooth skin texture.

Beta Hydroxy Acids are the best for normal-to-oily or break out skin while being excellent for reducing redness of rosacea.

Antioxidants disable free

radicals, the molecules generated by the sun, pollution and other sources, which damage the DNA of healthy skin leading to wrinkles, discoloration and possibly cancer. Vitamin C is thepowerhouse ingredient of antioxidants.

6

The night time winner is Retinol which is a vitamin A derivative. Retinol stimulates cell turnover and collagen production, helping strengthen skin. Look for products with ingredients that include one or more of the following… Retinol, Glycolic, Salicyclic Acids and Retinyl Acetate or RetinylPalmitate.

Also look for Palmitoyl Tetrapeptided-7. An ingredient also recommended for an effective eye cream, its’ marketing name that you may be familiar with is Matrixyl 3000 ®.

7

Butylene Glycol is a key ingredient that is known to stimulate elastin to fight against skin sagging and improves resistance to gravity. You may find its’ marketing name as Idealift® in product ingredient lists.

Algae Extract, also known by its’ marketing name of Pepha-Tight® is a clinically tested algae based skin tightens the skin immediately and provides long term effect by strengthening the skin’s connective tissue.

In addition, a fantastic ingredient is Palmitoyl Tripeptide-5 or Syn-Coll®. This is a peptide designed to stimulate the skin’s natural mechanism to produce collagen.

The youngest of the Baby Boomers turned 50 in 2014 with Gen Xers right behind. Our neck begins to show age before anything else. The reason is that the skin on the neck is thinner than on the face and loses elasticity, causing our neck to sag. This can begin in our early 40s. Thank you perimenopause!

The skin on our neck and chest contains less sebaceous glands, secreting less naturally moisturizing oil leading to dry skin that ages faster.

Hyaluronic Acid is great for plumping skin cells

nothing beats Hyaluronic Acid. HA is an ingredient

which draws moisture from the air and holds up to 1,000 times its weight

in water.

Palmitoyl Tetrapeptide-7 is a key ingredient in Matrixyl 3000 and can

boost the growth of connective tissues and naturally increases the production of collagen in the skin. When the

production of collagen is increased, the skin can

heal and rejuvenate itself.

9

Capric Triglyceride is an ingredient derived from

coconut oil. It is considered an excellent emollient and skin-repairing ingredient in skin care products due to its mix of fatty acids that

skin can utilize to repair its surface and resist

moisture loss.

It’s about the RIGHT ingredients in the RIGHT Concentration – look for products that

disclose their active ingredients and the concentration of those ingredients on the product packaging.

Know what ingredients you need for each product – day cream, night cream, etc.

Be an educated consumer! Your skin will thank you for it.
