Where is The Mouse?” Papa put down his newspaper. “The Boy,” my father said quietly, “has a mouse in his room. He says they are friends. The Mouse has said nothing to me.” “Set the trap!” cried Mama. “Set the trap immediately!” “The trap was set,” my father explained patiently, “but The Mouse removed the cheese without springing the trap!” “That’s impossible!” she cried. She turned to me with accusing eyes. “I forbid you to remove the cheese. You understand?” I looked down sadly and nodded my head. “But it is only a coward who stands still while his best friend is killed with mean tricks,” I said stubbornly. “But a mouse is different,” my mother argued. “A friend is a friend,” I insisted. “At least, if you wish to fight my friend, you could fight fair— not with traps!” “Listen to him.” shouted Papa, “Shall I make a tail for myself get down on my hands and knees and bite The Mouse with my teeth?” Trapped - Unit 1 Worksheets - Reader 5

Papa went upstairs and set the trap with an unfairly large and unusually attractive piece of cheese. I sighed, I could see it was no use. When he came down, I asked him quietly, “Papa, is there a heaven for The Mouse?” Papa stood still and stared at me. “Yes. Yes,” he said, “there is a heaven for everyone.” Mama stroked my head and said meekly, “After this, let us get a large cat. Then such matters will be out of our hands!” Adapted from a short story by Robert Fontaine

Listening text: World Wildlife Fund works to save all species and their homes. It involves people in their country’s conservation efforts. By 2020, WWF hopes to save 19 of the world’s most important natural places. It will also change wildlife trade and protect the future of nature. Did you know rhino horn and tiger bones are used for medicinal purposes? Leopard fur is used for fashion while monkeys are used for research. If you love nature, don’t ever buy a wildlife product such as ivory, tiger claws or tortoise shell. Never buy wild birds such as parrots, macaws, peacocks and ostriches as pets. Avoid bringing home animals such as star-shelled tortoises, iguanas, deer, monkeys or snakes. Join a conservation club today! Write letters to the newspapers or local magazines in support of wildlife conservation. Encourage your friends to do the same. Write to state heads or your country’s Prime Minister and ask the government to save the planet for future generations. Be part of the work. Change the path of conservation!

Answer Key More Reading Worksheet 1 1 In the bedroom of the young narrator. 2 The father and mother did not like it and wanted to trap it and kill it. Their son who is a young boy, likes the mouse and feels it is his friend. 3 Every time he had set a trap with cheese, he found the trap had been sprung but the cheese had disappeared. He thought that the mouse had cleverly managed to take only the cheese and escape. But it was his son who took away the cheese so that the mouse was not tempted by it or get trapped. 4 b because he knew it would catch the mouse’s attention and cause it to fall into the trap 5 Yes he does. He thinks it is his friend and is very loyal to it. “But it is only a coward who stands still while his best friend is killed with mean tricks.” 6 So that next time a mouse enters the house, it will kill it and they would not feel guilty to hurt their son’s feelings by setting a trap and killing it on purpose. 7 For example: When I approached the new librarian, she said that she could not extend the date of return as she was not in charge of that and the matter was out of her hands.
