Sarah Cynthia Sylvia Stout

Would not take the garbage out!

It filled the can, it covered the floor,

It cracked the window and blocked the door,

The garbage rolled on down the hall,

It raised the roof, it broke the wall…

At last the garbage reached so high

That finally it touched the sky.

Nothing but a hot

Swish of strings like silk

Ten feet out.

When girls

Cheered on the sidelines.

It was many and many a year ago,

In a kingdom by the sea,

That a maiden there lived whom you may know

By the name of Annabel Lee;-

And this maiden she lived with no other thought

Than to love and be loved by me.

A big room with heavy wooden tables, heavy oak chairs.

To the left side the card catalogue.

All those books–another world–just waiting at my fingertips.

Look out how you use proud words.

When you let proud words go, it is

not easy to call them back.

They wear long boots, hard boots; they

walk off proud; they can’t hear you

calling–

Look out how you use proud words.
