It is very important to clamp and crush the optic nerve and internal opthalmic artery and vein. The curvature on standard artery forceps is not correct and if used the handles stand up in the way. The Enucleation Forceps are designed to slide around the rear of the globe and capture the blood vessels. The jaws are then levered against the edge of the orbit to elevate the globe for ease of tying. The handles curve out of the way. Use with eye enucleation scissors page 343. Opticlar LoupesA Guide to Choosing the Right Loupes

As a Guideline the following will help you choose your ideal loupe.

There are 5 main parameters to consider when selecting loupes, all of which will affect your final choice.

1. MountHeadband or Frame?

Consider whether you already wear spectacles, the magnification of your loupes (the higher magnification the heavier the optics), and type of headband and duration of use.

2. Working DistanceGenerally this depends on whether the user is sitting or standing.

Height:

• Less than 5ft 4in - Working distance 340mm

• 5ft 4in to 5ft 9in - Working distance 420mm

• 5ft 9in to 6ft 2 in - Working distance 460mm

• Above 6ft 2in - Working distance 500mm

This guideline is for those practitioners standing, if sitting the next lowest working distance should be most suitable.

3. Magnification The general rule is the least magnification the better. For most applications a 2.5x loupe is ideal.

4. Field of ViewThis is the area that is in focus, generally the wider the better as this reduces the amount of sideways head movement.

5. LightingAdding a coaxial light will improve the use of your loupes. If you may add a light at a later stage make sure you select a mount which will accept a light.
