Welcome to thisyear’s edition ofAll About

Southern and East Africa –your essential guide toselling exceptional andaffordable holidays toAfrica with its amazingwildlife, varied cultures, superb beaches andoutstanding natural beauty.

This year has startedextremely well, withJanuary and February salesof safari holidays hittinglevels we haven’t seensince 2008. Customerswanting to see the

abundant wildlife of Africa are once again booking rather thanlooking, as prices have come tumbling down over the recession.

Our customers continue to be predominantly middle aged, butwe are seeing a resurgence of honeymoon bookings as youngcouples seek out a once-in-a-lifetime experience.

Remember a safari holiday continues to be aspirational -something for the bucket list. This demand has been driven byextensive TV coverage, including Sir David Attenborough’s newAfrica programme on BBC1 and Charley Boorman’s South AfricanAdventures on Channel 5.

So now is a great time to be promoting safari holidays. Theyrange in price from inexpensive self-drive to top-end luxury, andare relatively easy to sell. And afterwards you will have some verysatisfied customers.

So don’t be scared to book a safari holiday in 2013. Remember, you can always call us and ask for help.

Warm regards,Claire FarleySales and marketing director2by2 Holidays

Liz Peacock, co-owner of Cheli & Peacock has six campsincluding Kitich Camp, Joy’s Camp, Lewa Safari Camp,Tortilis Camp and Elsa’s Kopje. Cheli & Peacock alsomanages the ground arrangements in Kenya for a numberof UK tour operators. She offers some advice to agents on how to sell luxury.

Make sure that safari camps and lodges you are bookingfollow ethical practices. Check to make sure they have:built in a sensitive zone; that they work with the localcommunity; they have built the camp with ethicalmaterials and followed sound environmental practice; andthey have properly trained guides.

The best high-end areas and lodges and camps are notalways the most well known, as they don't get the mass-

market numbers travelling through them.  This is actuallyan advantage to the high-end traveller so research well tomake sure that you are booking clients into the ‘best’rather than the most popular.

Often the most well-known destinations have sufferedfrom overcrowding.  However the original reasons theybecame famous are often still valid, and theknowledgeable high end operator knows where to sendtheir client to have the best experience of these areas.

Staff knowledge is key - Fam trips are very important.High end clients need to talk to someone who reallyknows what they are talking about, and can sell beautifulareas with small luxury camps that have not hit the bigtime.

MalawiMalawi Travel Marketing Consortium is celebrating its 10thanniversary this year with an average 12% a annual increase invisitors since 2003.

Nestled in the heart of south east Africa and landlocked betweenZambia, Tanzania and Mozambique, Malawi isone of Africa’s smallest countries. The consortium represents thecountry’s operators, accommodation providers and ground handlers.

The group promotes the destination through its wildlifeexperiences, water sports, landscapes, culture, itsmuch-famed lake known as ‘God’s Aquarium’ and its relaxed ‘barefoot’ luxury appeal.

As a consequence, the number of tour operators selling Malawihas increased in recent years, and as well as African specialistoperators, some of the larger tailor-made specialists such as Coxand Kings, Explore Worldwide and Audley Travel now featureMalawi within their itineraries.

Over the last twelve months Malawi’s tourism industry has beenboosted by significant investment from a number of sources. Inthe lower Shire Valley, the Majete Wildlife Reserve’s wildlife re-stocking programme has culminated with the re-introduction ofpredators, and in the east of the country around $850,000 is beinginvested into the Nhakotakota Wildlife Reserve.

The first upmarket lodge has opened in Nkhotakota WildlifeReserve and rhino tracking is now available at Liwonde NationalPark, with the first new lodge to be built in 20 years opening thisyear. Horse-riding safaris are also being resumed in NyikaNational Park.

Air Botswana is starting daily flights between Lilongwe andGaborone, which will open up new twin-centre holiday optionsbetween Malawi/Botswana.

South SudanBahr el Jebel Safaris is offering visitors the chance to get awayfrom the crowds and go on safari in south Sudan.

Bahr el Jebel Safaris takes clients on safaris that follow theroute of the White Nile that flows through northern Uganda, intosouth Sudan and onward to the Mediterranean Sea passingthrough Boma National Park, a scene of mass animal migrationwhen the seasonal rains return.

SwazilandSwaziland Tourism has launched a new website as thelandlocked southern African country looks to raise its profilewith seasoned travellers and first-time safaris alike.

About the size of Wales, Swaziland, which is also thebirthplace of British actor Richard E Grant, is one of the smallestin the Southern Hemisphere.

It has one of the most well-established and celebrated culturalheritages on the continent. One of only three remaining monarchiesleft in Africa, the Swazi nation is led by King Mswati III, who alongwith the rest of the ‘Dlamini’ royal family is the focal point of thecountry’s calendar of traditional festivities.

The Kingdom has a wide range of ecological zones; the ruggedmountainous terrain in the west has earned Swaziland the name'Switzerland of Africa'. In contrast the landscape to the east ismainly bush savannah and open plains, but rises again with theLebombo mountains.

Swaziland’s largest protected area, the Hlane Royal National Park,is home to four of the big five; the lion, elephant, rhino and leopard.

In the southeast lies unspoilt wilderness and is a haven toendangered species. The Mkhaya Game Reserve is one of the onlyplaces in Africa where visitors will spot both black and white rhino.
