Guests from across theindustry honoured Chiles for herperseverance, which has seenher company thrive through twoGulf wars, SARS, pilot strikes, stock market crashes and 9/11. She regaled attendees withtales from her time in theindustry, and harked back to herlaunch year of 1981 whenreturn fares to Fiji were about$530 - almost exactly the samelevel they are now. “Nothing has changed,” shesaid, and returned to a familiartheme by reminding guests that“the skills shortage is here to stayand we need to do somethingabout it”. Chiles attributed inPlace’ssuccess to the close relationshipsit has with both employers andcandidates, bemoaning the waysome companies reject

prospective staff on the basis ofan impersonal online test. “Success is the people youemploy and those you partnerwith,” Chiles said, with the roll-upof high profile industry executivesat the event a tribute to the highesteem in which she is held.
